The Pac-12 Conference announced Friday that member athletic teams in several sports — including football — would play a limited schedule against only conference opponents.The conference also announced that it was delaying the start of mandatory athletic activities "until a series of health and safety indicators...provided sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of return-to-play activities."The conference did not say in its statement what those "indicators" were.Men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball teams will also be limited to a conference-only schedule this fall.The Pac-12 added that it would honor scholarships for players who choose to sit out the season for fear of contracting the virus.The conference's decision eliminates a number of high-profile non-conference matchups that would have netted members' schools a significant paycheck from broadcasters. It could also negatively impact any Pac-12 football team's chance of playing in a postseason bowl game.The decision comes a day after the Big Ten made a similar announcement. The number of people unable to make house payments on time has reached a nine-year high, according to a recent analysis of the data.Mortgage delinquencies were at 8.22 percent of all loans for the second quarter of 2020, says the Mortgage Bankers Association.At the end of June, an estimated 4.2 million Americans were on a forbearance plan, meaning they have an agreement with their mortgage lender to delay foreclosure."The COVID-19 pandemic's effects on some homeowners' ability to make their mortgage payments could not be more apparent. The nearly 4 percentage point jump in the delinquency rate was the biggest quarterly rise in the history of MBA's survey," said Marina Walsh, MBA's Vice President of Industry Analysis in a press release. "The second quarter results also mark the highest overall delinquency rate in nine years, and a survey-high delinquency rate for FHA loans."FHA, or Federal Housing Administration, loans are designed for low-to-moderate income borrowers and require a smaller down payment when purchasing a home. The survey found 15.65 percent of FHA loans were delinquent in the second quarter of 2020. That’s the highest rate since the Mortgage Bankers Association began keeping records in 1979.The survey asks loan servicers to report any loan that is not paid back according to the terms in the agreement.The high rate of mortgage delinquencies appear to be connected with availability of jobs. The five states with the largest increases in delinquency rate were New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Florida and Hawaii; all states with a high number of leisure and hospitality jobs that are now in flux because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1669

The National Hockey League and players have reached a tentative deal to hold a 56-game season in 2021. The season would start Jan. 13. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the sides agreed, pending the approval of various executive boards. The NHL Players' Association's board is meeting Friday night to discuss, while the league's Board of Governors could vote on the plan soon. Approval from Canadian health officials is still needed before the NHL can go ahead with the season. Training camps for the seven non-playoff games would open Dec. 31 and then Jan. 3 for the other 24 teams."The biggest challenge is making sure that our players and supporting personnel are safe and healthy and making sure that we're not doing anything that puts the communities in which we're playing at risk either in terms of spreading COVID or taking medical resources, whether it's testing or vaccinations," Commissioner Gary Bettman said."We understand what is vitally important to each community and to the health and welfare of each community, and we don't want to do anything that would interfere with that. The list of recalled hand sanitizers is growing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has named dozens that contain methanol, which can cause blindness or hospitalizations if absorbed through skin.A consumer watchdog tells us these products are not FDA approved. That's because in March, the agency allowed companies that never made hand sanitizer to make it in order to meet demand. They just had to agree to follow the rules.“So, guess what happened? Some of them didn't follow the rules, either intentionally or unintentionally, and so then, they started getting reports from the poison control centers of people getting sick from methanol in hand sanitizer instead of ethanol,” said Teresa Murray with U.S. PIRG.Murray says many of the recalled products have been made in Mexico. But as part of the temporary guidelines, companies don't have to disclose where the sanitizers were manufactured. So, it's hard for consumers to tell which products might be dangerous.Murray says if you can't tell where the product was made, don't buy it and don't use it if it's already in your home. To be safe, stick with brand names you recognize for now.Murray has found most stores and online retailers have pulled products on the FDA list, but you should still be careful depending on where you shop.“I would caution anyone from buying anything that's on an end-cap clearance aisle, or anything that's from a super discount store,” said Murray. “There may be a reason why one of the mainstream retailers is no longer selling it.”Murray says it's always important to keep hand sanitizers out of reach for kids and pets, but now, even more so.If ingested, methanol can cause even more health problems.Click here to learn more from the FDA. 1738

The mother of a Florida child who was punched in the face by an adult is wondering why the man was not arrested. “He was screaming at us, cursing at us, calling us the 'n-word' and he came down to the middle of his yard, and I was like 'who are you talking too,' and he said 'come within arm's reach and I'll show you who I'm talking to,'" said Malikai Villatte, the 12-year-old boy who was punched.  A picture of Malikai after the incident showed his two front teeth were knocked out. The young boy also received stitches to heal a gash on his mouth. “When I realized my teeth were dangling in my mouth it was kind of shocking, I didn't know what was going on," Malikai said. “It was like a nightmare, I just knew I had to get there and I had to get there fast," said Malikai's mother Brittany Graham. His parents are upset because the man who punched Malikai was not arrested. Lataevion Graham, 13, says he witnessed the incident and claims Cerfalo spat on them after punching Malikai. Graham's father says he wants justice for the children. “Where it is okay for an adult to take the law into their own hands, and to strike a kid hard enough to knock out his teeth. Where is that acceptable, in what country is that acceptable?" said Larry Graham. According to a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the man who punched Malikai was 27-year-old Vincent Cerfalo.“Originally this is where the altercation took place, right here," Cerfalo said.“I told them to back off and if they come on my property I'm going to defend myself. They said, 'you won't hit us, you won't hit us,' and they started to surround me," said Cerfalo. He says it all started when he yelled at the kids to get out of the road because they were blocking traffic.A cellphone video captured the moments after Malikai was punched. Cerfalo claims he was acting in self defense.“He touched me and I lifted my hand out, and I ended up hitting him. It was not my intention to hit anybody that hard, it was not my intention to knock teeth out or do harm, or cause any kind of trouble,” Cerfalo said.The children say no one touched Cerfalo at any time during the incident. Cerfalo says he never expected things to escalate to violence. He now plans to press charges against 12-year-old Malikai for assault, which the child’s parents can’t understand. “He's not going to jail, nothing is happening to him and he's basically getting away with it right now," Malikai said.“I want the man in jail," said Brittany Graham.  The case has been sent to the state attorney’s office, which will determine if a summons will be issued to Malikai for assault.  2750
