SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the largest loss of life in United States Navy history and you can read an award-winning account of it by two San Diego authors. ‘Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man’ is being released as a paperback after the hardcover became a New York Times bestseller. Sara Vladic and Lynn Vincent wrote the book together after researching it for more than 17 years. “It’s so much more than a sinking story and a shark story,” said author Lynn Vincent. Vladic spent nearly two decades interviewing survivors from the sinking USS Indianapolis. “Getting to know these men and their story and heroism and what it took to survive those days is incredible,” added Vladic, “it still teaches us lessons today of what the cost of freedom really is and what we should be remembering.” The book is cinematically written and presents multiple accounts from the men that had to fend off sharks and each other for several days at sea after the heavy cruiser was sank by the Japanese during WWII. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and his wife, Margaret, on suspicion of campaign funding misuse.The affidavit detailed instances from 2009 through 2016 in which the Hunters reportedly used campaign money illegally for things like video games, family vacations, school tuition, and more.Over the course of a year, Hunter vehemently denied the allegations, often calling the indictment "politically motivated."On Dec. 2, 2019, Hunter agreed to change his plea to guilty to one count. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lifeguards removed a body found floating in the ocean off Sunset Cliffs Friday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.First responders were notified about 9:30 a.m. about the remains near Point Loma Ave. Lifeguards removed the body and transported it to their headquarters, officials said.The person had been in the water “a while”, according to San Diego Police.Officers told 10News they would be handling the discovery as a death report and not sending a homicide team to investigate.The person's identity and cause of death were not immediately available. 590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a normal school year, thousands of San Diego families rely on after-school programs to help with child care and tutoring.But with schools going virtual this fall amid the pandemic, groups like the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Clubs plan to expand after-school programs into full-day operations to alleviate the burden on working families.“It’s a whole new world for us. And it’s a whole new world for families,” said Greg Erickson of the YMCA of San Diego County. “There has never been a greater demand for these types of programs than right now and so the Y has to be ready, and we will.”Beginning in August, the Y will ramp up staffing to offer full-day and half-day enrichment options for kids from kindergarten through middle school.The goal is to have kids in supervised activities from about 8 am to 4:30 pm, with half the day set aside for games and social enrichment and the other half supporting distance learning.“You can imagine a staff member with 10 kids in a classroom, each on a different Zoom call,” Erickson said. Staff members will not be credentialed teachers, he added, but the Y is interested in recruiting substitute teachers or college students studying education.The location of these childcare programs will vary across the county: some will be offered at YMCA facilities, some will be at school sites, and others will be at third-party facilities like community centers and churches.With demand for childcare expected to be high as long as school campuses are closed, the YMCA is actively scouting locations that can host enrichment programs for an indeterminate amount of time, Erickson said. The YMCA already serves about 15,000 kids in its after-school programs, said Association Director of Public Relations and Communications Courtney Pendleton.The YMCA expects to announce more specifics about the program this week, Erickson said.
