SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Biomedical technician, engineering and phlebotomy are just some of the programs MiraCosta College offered free for fall 2020 for Oceanside residents, thanks to Hire Local."The intent was to train up Oceanside residents for in-demand jobs, in Oceanside, in our companies that pay competitive wages."Hire Local was funded by federal approved grants, and was created by the City of Oceanside and MiraCosta College."We saw it as a win-win because it helps our residents find meaningful careers while creating a talent pipeline for our businesses, so they can stay here and grow here," described Michelle Gellar, with the City of Oceanside.Michelled added the program helped people who lost their jobs amid COVID-19 get back on their feet."We're doing our best to help our businesses navigate through this tough time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Applications are now being accepted for the CONNECT ALL @ the Jacobs Center Business Accelerator Program (CAJC).CAJC is the region's first low-to-moderate income and diversity-focused business accelerator program.The first CAJC group of 13 local startups included businesses in retail, technology, food, and health and beauty. The founders come from various ethnic backgrounds, including African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander.Entrepreneurs receive six months of free workspace, mentorship, and workshops - learning skills like how to access capital. Kelly Twichel is one of 13 entrepreneurs in CONNECT ALL's first cohort. Her woman-owned company Access Trax was born in a college classroom. "It's important because you want to level the playing field. Anybody has and can come up with a great idea."Twichel and the rest of the first CONNECT ALL cohort will finish their program in October. "Not having to give up equity in my company meant a lot to me because I wanted to grow this as organically as possible and really maintain control. We are a woman-owned small business, and I wanted to do everything I could to continue to foster that."She's now in the running for the Amber Grant for Women Entrepreneurs contest; if awarded, Twichel's company would receive ,000. Community members can vote for her company now through December. The goal of CONNECT ALL is to grow startups into thriving businesses which go on to hire local and strengthen the City of San Diego's economy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community leaders are reacting to this week's move by state lawmakers to let voters decide in November whether to reinstate affirmative action.“It’s been a long, hard road and now we can actually see some light at the end of the tunnel,” said San Diego NAACP President Francine Maxwell on Thursday afternoon. It follows Wednesday's news that California lawmakers approved a proposal to repeal the 25-year-old law that bans looking at race, sex, ethnicity, color or national origin in college admissions, contracting and public employment.“The NAACP San Diego branch is elated that it was a 30-10 vote. Two-thirds majority said that things have to change and we're headed to November,” she added.Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) authored the bill and asked for support on ACA 5, which lets voters decide whether to reinstate affirmative action by repealing Prop 209.“The ongoing pandemic as well as recent tragedies of police violence is forcing Californians to acknowledge the deep-seated inequality and far-reaching institutional failures that show that race and gender still matters,” she told her colleagues this week.“African Americans have been at the bottom for over 401 years. Affirmative action was an opportunity so they could open the door to walk into colleges, to [have] the opportunity of economics, to change the narrative of their family,” Maxwell told ABC10 News.Republican Assembly candidate June Cutter from San Diego opposes the return of affirmative action. Thursday, she told ABC10 News, “It is a band-aid put at the end of the problem rather than trying to find a solution to the disparity that I absolutely acknowledge exists and instead of trying to fix it at the starting line we're trying to fix it at the finish line and that's what I have a real problem with.”Cutter said she believes real change needs to happen earlier through the course of opportunities in K -12 education within under-served and under-privileged communities.Assemblymember Weber was unavailable for an interview on Thursday but her office sent ABC10 News the following statement.“The fate of Prop. 209 will now be in the hands of voters on November 3rd. While it was sold as a civil rights law when it passed in 1996, Proposition 209 has cost women- and minority-owned businesses .1 billion each year, perpetuated a wage gap wherein women make 80 cents on every dollar made by men, and allowed discriminatory hiring and contracting practices to continue unhindered. Far from being colorblind, the bill has set up barriers to women and minorities to share in the economic life of California. Proposition 209 has hindered public policy, thwarted opportunity and maintained economic disparity long enough. It’s time to give voters a chance to right this wrong.” 2796

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cathedral Catholic High School students took part in a protest Tuesday against a ban on skirts as uniform options for girls. Officials at the Carmel Valley school changed the dress code Friday for the 2019-2020 school year. CCHS said it would ban the uniform skirts, citing multiple detentions based on enforcement. Female students will have the option to wear pants, capri pants, or Bermuda shorts, the school said. “By removing the option for girls to wear skirts at a Catholic school not only demeans me as a female, but makes me wonder if we are moving towards a gender neutral society. I believe this is sexist, patriarchal and sexualizes the female students unnecessarily,” said freshman student Rachel Donaldson. RELATED: Cathedral Catholic High School girls protest 'sexist' ban on skirtsDonaldson also cited an email about the dress code change she said was sent from Principal Kevin Calkins to parents and students Friday, calling it “disturbing.” “The most disturbing: ‘Male faculty feel uncomfortable addressing female students about the length of their skirts.’ If a male teacher has a problem addressing student's skirt lengths, then they have no business being anywhere near a high school or a female minor. They are there to educate and guide- this is a simple task,” wrote Donaldson. A student created a petition on Change.org to keep skirts as part of the uniform option. By Tuesday afternoon, about 3,000 people had signed online. “It’s not practical to make girls go out and buy new uniforms when they’ve already paid hundreds for the ones they currently wear, our parents are already investing enough money on our education,” said commenter Mia M. on the Change.org petition. “Females should be able to choose what they feel comfortable in and not have their sense of elegance and femininity taken away from them. Making the switch to shorts is no way a practical or ethical solution.” 1933
