SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 16-year-old boy suspected of stealing a vehicle and leading police in San Diego on a short pursuit was hospitalized Monday evening with a broken hip after being ejected or jumping from the vehicle and being run over before the Jeep struck a traffic signal pole.Officers received information about a 2019 Jeep Compass stolen from the 3800 block of Fairmount Avenue about 7:20 p.m. and spotted the vehicle speeding and attempted to stop it near 54th Street and University Avenue, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.The driver fled southbound on 54th Street and ran red lights, prompting the pursuit to be terminated, Buttle said.The suspect continued southbound on 54th Street, crossed into the northbound lanes and crashed in the Chollas Creek area into a traffic signal, where he was either ejected or tried to get out of the Jeep before it stopped and was run over, pinning his arm under a tire, Buttle said.Firefighters freed the suspect from under the Jeep and he was taken to a hospital with a fractured hip.Two 16-year-old girls in the Jeep were taken to a hospital to be evaluated, Buttle said. 1161

San Diegans were reminded again this weekend that what was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is not the city's most glamorous place. The lights just turned off in the middle of San Diego State’s game winning drive against Stanford on Saturday. But the aging San Diego Stadium, as its currently known, appears to be primed for yet another new chapter - even as public officials debate how the site should be redeveloped.  San Diego County Credit Union, which already sponsors the Holiday bowl, is stepping up with 0,000 to place its name on the stadium until the end of next year.  But that's not all.  The credit union’s proposal to the City Council outlines plans to market the venue. The goal is to bring in even more events, including concerts, soccer games, weddings, birthday parties, fireworks, corporate softball, seminars and team building.  Its four key objectives are: Introduce, build and increase awareness of SDCCU StadiumPromote and Increase awareness and attendance of evnets atking place at SDCCU StadiumPosition SDCCU Stadium as the most desired venue in the city of San Diego host any and all types of eventsDrive additional revenue to the stadium. Isidro Cardenas, who enjoyed the tailgate scene at charger games, says he'd like more activity at the stadium “I’d like to see it used for the local sport avenue here in our San Diego County,” he said. “Whatever we can do to help along, so now that the Chargers are gone bring in more colleges to play there. The proposal also says the credit union would install five ATMs on site.The City Council will consider the plan at its meeting Tuesday.  A spokeswoman for the credit union said more details would be released if the city council approves the naming rights plan.   1810

SAN DIEGO — A leader has emerged in the battle between two democrats to represent California's 53rd District in Congress, according to a scientific poll released Tuesday. Sara Jacobs is leading Georgette Gomez 38 percent to 24 percent in the race, with 38 percent still undecided, an ABC-10News Union-Tribune says. Jacobs, a nonprofit founder who served in Obama's State Department, is leading Gomez among Democrats, Independents and Republicans who say they have made up their minds. Gomez, currently the San Diego City Council president, is leading Jacobs among the youngest voters, those between the ages of 18 to 34. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said the poll still shows the race isn't over, despite Jacobs' big lead. Kousser noted Jacobs still has not secured at least 50 percent of the vote, according to the poll."We're going to see an all-out press and more money spent by each of these candidates because they see that this race is far from over," Kousser said. "Sara Jacobs hasn't closed the deal, Georgette Gomez still sees a light at the end of the electoral tunnel from this poll."The candidates combined spent nearly million campaigning through June 30. Jacobs, granddaughter of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs, reported .5 million in receipts, while Gomez reported .17 million. "It's always nice to have polls reflect what we're feeling on the ground, which is that what voters are looking for in this district is someone who has the kind of experience I have working in the federal government and who will be a new generation of leaders," Jacobs said in an interview. In a statement, a spokesperson for Gomez's campaign expressed confidence. “It’s still early and not a single vote has been cast," the statement said. "Georgette Gómez’s message of leadership in response to the coronavirus crisis and standing up to Trump as President of the San Diego City Council is starting to reach voters. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said.The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
