LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will be honored posthumously with a Grammy award for his contributions to music technology, The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday.Jobs, who passed away Oct. 5 of pancreatic cancer, will receive a Trustees Award for helping create products "that transformed the way we consume music, TV, movies and books," the academy said in a prepared statement.The Apple Computer Inc. first received a Technical Grammy Award in 2002, for contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field, the academy said.Along with Jobs, bandleader and composer Dave Bartholomew, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder will also receive the award.The academy also picked the Allman Brothers, Glen Campbell, Diana Ross and Brazilian pianist/singer/guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim as recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards. Jobim was known for composing "The Girl from Ipanema," a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s which won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965.Other artists, including trumpeter Wayne Jackson, saxophonist Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns,country legend George Jones,and the late Gil Scott-Heron were also named as recipients.German sound-technology firm Celemony and the late audio engineer Roger Nichols, who worked with artists including Ross, Placido Domingo, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder, were recognized with Grammy Technical Awards."This year's honorees offer a variety of brilliance, contributions and lasting impressions on our culture," said President/CEO of The Recording Academy Neil Portnow. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Apple announced on Tuesday that its latest iPhone 4S smartphone will be available in China's Hong Kong, South Korea and 13 additional countries next Friday.Customers will be able to pre-order iPhone 4S beginning this Friday, the Cupertino, California-based company said in a statement.The other 13 countries are Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal and Romania.So far, some owners have been complaining about the shorter battery life on their new iPhone 4S handsets. Apple is reportedly investigating the issue and has not made official comments yet.The iPhone 4S looks the same as the previous iPhone 4 but has major hardware upgrade inside. Apple announced sales of more than four million units of iPhone 4S in the three days after its launch in the United States on Oct. 14.The iPhone 4S now is available in 29 countries and is expected to arrive in stores in more than 70 countries by the end of this year.

YICHANG, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on Sunday reached its designed highest mark, the second time for the world's largest water control and hydropower project to run at full capacity.The water level hit 175 meters at 5 p.m. after storing water for nearly two months from the water level of 152 meters, said an official with the China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC), the developer of the project.A dozen hydropower turbo-generator units started operation on Sunday, generating power capacity of 8.2 million kw, said the official.The dam in central China's Hubei Province completed its first full-capacity test last October.Operating at full capacity should give full play to the dam's functions of generating hydroelectric power, delivering water to the lower reaches to alleviate spring droughts, and containing water from summer flooding, as required by the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.The Three Gorges Project was launched in 1993 with a budget equivalent to 22.5 billion U.S. dollars.So far, monitoring shows the dam is operating smoothly.

COTABATO, Philippines, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The health authorities declared an outbreak of a deadly rat fever on Monday in the flood-hit areas in the southern Philippines.At least five people were already dead and as many as 200 were diagnosed in the southern city of Cagayan de Oro with leptospirosis, a fatal animal-borne disease that can result in high fever, internal bleeding and organ failure.The latest fatality, an old woman, died late Monday due to complication.Dr. Jaime Bernadas, regional health minister, said they fear the number of patients displaced by typhoon Washi could increase in the coming days.Congressman Rufus Rodriguez has called on people affected by the floods that killed over 1,200 people to avail of the government's vaccination against the deadly disease.The death toll from tropical storm Washi currently stands at 1, 258 people with many still believed missing. Washi brought massive rains, causing flooding in many areas in the Central and Southern Philippines starting last Dec. 16.
