Washington insiders are predicting a much higher than usual turnout for the midterm elections, and a lot of big companies are helping voters get to the polls! Uber and Lyft are among those offering free rides.But it’s not just big companies doing a good deed on Election Day. One woman, Cheryl Fleming, is personally taking voters to the polls, calling it her civic duty.Despite the wet weather in Virginia today, Fleming is behind the wheel, volunteering her time to voters."Pickin’ up folks and taking them to the polls, insuring that they have no excuse," says Fleming.There’s a reason why Fleming is doing this. Over two decades ago, she had a felony conviction on her record and was stripped of her right to vote.But in 2016, that right was restored. She was 54 years old when she cast her first ballot. Now, she's making it her mission to get people to the polls.One of Fleming’s passengers on Election Day was 70-year-old Marine veteran Joseph Crouch, who has a similar story to Fleming’s.“When you're an ex-felon, you feel isolated and locked out,” says Crouch.Crouch’s voting rights were restored four years ago, but this is his very first election. He says he has Fleming to thank for getting him to the polls.“She’s a fantastic person, Crouch said.“For her to step up like she’s doing, that’s fantastic.” 1323

WASHINGTON (AP) — The traditional White House gingerbread house isn't exactly a house this year. It's a massive, sugary replica of the entire National Mall.The pastry creation — featured at Monday's unveiling of the White House holiday decorations — required 225 pounds of dough, 25 pounds of chocolate and 20 pounds of white icing. It includes replicas of the Capitol, the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the Washington Monument and the White House, complete with tiny green wreaths with red ribbons on each window.White House pastry chefs have created gingerbread houses during the holidays since the early 1970s. The first one depicted a Christmas village. Another was a replica of President Bill Clinton's boyhood home in Arkansas."American Treasures" is the theme of this year's White House holiday decor, designed by first lady Melania Trump, who tweeted a video showing her walking amid the display. Decorations in the ornate East Room are meant to highlight the diversity and ingenuity of American architecture.Four custom-made mantelpieces feature the skylines of New York, St. Louis, Chicago and San Francisco. Seventy-two handmade paper ornaments representing six regions across the nation adorn four 14-foot fir trees. In the library, trees are decorated with ornaments from all states and territories.In the China Room there are three tables recreated from previous state dinners during the Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Trump administrations using, china and glassware from the White House permanent collection. A place card for President Donald Trump is next to one for "Mrs. Macron," French President Emmanuel Macron's wife, Brigitte.Upstairs in the Green Room, there are decorations representing an American cornucopia with fruits, vegetables and grains adorning a tree.The 18-foot official White House Christmas tree stands tall in the center of the Blue Room. The Fraser fir from North Carolina is decorated with more than 500 feet of blue velvet ribbon embroidered in gold with each state and territory.The Red Room features ornaments and two wreaths made of pencils stamped with "Be Best," Mrs. Trump's youth initiative.Patriotism is on display in the Grand Foyer and Cross Hall. More than 14,000 red ornaments hang on the branches of 29 trees. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is poised to revoke California's authority to set auto mileage standards, asserting that only the federal government has the power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy.Conservative and free-market groups have been asked to attend a formal announcement of the rollback set for Wednesday afternoon at Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington.Gloria Bergquist, spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said Tuesday that her group was among those invited to the event featuring EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.The move comes after the Justice Department recently opened an antitrust investigation into a deal between California and four automakers for tougher pollution and related mileage requirements than those sought by President Donald Trump. Trump also has sought to relax Obama-era federal mileage standards nationwide, weakening a key effort by his Democratic predecessor to slow climate change.Top California officials and environmental groups pledged legal action to stop the rollback.The White House declined to comment Tuesday, referring questions to EPA. EPA's press office did not respond to a phone message and email seeking comment.But EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler told the National Automobile Dealers Association on Tuesday that the Trump administration would move "in the very near future" to take steps toward establishing one nationwide set of fuel-economy standards."We embrace federalism and the role of the states, but federalism does not mean that one state can dictate standards for the nation," he said, adding that higher fuel economy standards would hurt consumers by increasing the average sticker price of new cars and requiring automakers to produce more electric vehicles.Word of the pending announcement came as Trump traveled to California on Tuesday for an overnight trip that includes GOP fundraising events near San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.California's authority to set its own, tougher emissions standards goes back to a waiver issued by Congress during passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970. The state has long pushed automakers to adopt more fuel-efficient passenger vehicles that emit less pollution. A dozen states and the District of Columbia also follow California's fuel economy standards.California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Tuesday that the Trump administration's action will hurt both U.S. automakers and American families. He said California would fight the administration in federal court."You have no basis and no authority to pull this waiver," Becerra, a Democrat, said in a statement, referring to Trump. "We're ready to fight for a future that you seem unable to comprehend."California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the White House "has abdicated its responsibility to the rest of the world on cutting emissions and fighting global warming.""California won't ever wait for permission from Washington to protect the health and safety of children and families," said Newsom, a Democrat.The deal struck in July between California and four of the world's largest automakers — Ford, Honda, BMW and Volkswagen — bypassed the Trump administration's plan to freeze emissions and fuel economy standards adopted under Obama at 2021 levels.The four automakers agreed with California to reduce emissions by 3.7% per year starting with the 2022 model year, through 2026. That compares with 4.7% yearly reductions through 2025 under the Obama standards. Emissions standards are closely linked with fuel economy requirements because vehicles pollute less if they burn fewer gallons of fuel.The U.S. transportation sector is the nation's biggest single source of planet-warming greenhouse gasses.Wheeler said Tuesday: "California will be able to keep in place and enforce programs to address smog and other forms of air pollution caused by motor vehicles." But fuel economy has been one of the key regulatory tools the state has used to reduce harmful emissions.Environmentalists condemned the Trump administration's expected announcement, which comes as gasoline prices have crept higher following a weekend drone attack that hobbled Saudi Arabian oil output."Everyone wins when we adopt strong clean car standards as our public policy," said Fred Krupp, president of Environmental Defense Fund. WASHINGTON, D.C. - You may have gotten one in the mail or a knock on the door: for months, the Census Bureau has counted every person living in the United States.Even the homeless in a rural state like Montana get counted."In the last month, we finished and submitted a census for 70 homeless people," said Carley Tuss, with St. Vincent de Paul homeless services in Great Falls, Montana.This year, though, an accurate census count could be in jeopardy."The census is not a dry statistical exercise," said Thomas Wolf of the Brennan Center for Justice, pushing in court for an accurate census count.Because of the coronavirus, the Census Bureau extended the deadline for in-person counting, setting it for the end of October. Then, things changed."Suddenly, then, on August 3, the Commerce Department and the Census Bureau abruptly and without explanation said that they were going to go back to the original timeline," Wolf said.The Census Bureau now plans to stop counting at the end of September, a full month earlier than planned.What's more, the deadline for processing those tens of millions of census responses, set for the spring of next year, got pushed up to the end of this year.However, a federal judge temporarily halted the plan, until there can be a court hearing later this month."If you cut the time short, you don't have enough time to collect the data. You don't have enough time to process the data," Wolf said, "and then you end up with real problems."Those problems could include under-counting communities of color, like African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans.In response to our questions, the Census Bureau referred us to a statement from their director, Steven Dillingham, which says, in part, "We are taking steps and adapting our operations to make sure everyone is counted while keeping everyone safe."Census maps, which are updated continuously, show that it can be a struggle in some states.Montana, Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, and New Mexico rank at the bottom of the list, with only about three-quarters of households responding.That can end up costing those states billions of dollars for highways, food stamps, school programs, and student loans.For example, Florida had one of the country's worst response rates during the 2010 census, and it cost the state tens of billions in federal dollars."When we don't participate, the money goes elsewhere," said Jonathan Evans, the city manager of Riviera Beach, Florida.In the meantime, multiple federal court cases are challenging – among other things-- the census schedule and the Trump administration's effort to exclude undocumented migrants from the count.Whether those cases are resolved before the census count ends remains to be seen. 2738
