SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the creation Tuesday of an emergency rental assistance program tied to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which will utilize .1 million in federal COVID-19 funds to support thousands of low-income residents experiencing financial hardships.The COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program will provide up to ,000 per household, assisting around 3,500 households total, according to the San Diego Housing Commission.Applications will be available through the housing commission's website no later than July 20."Our rental assistance program cleared another hurdle today, and in a matter of weeks over million will be directly available to thousands of renters struggling to navigate the financial challenges of the COVID pandemic," said City Councilman Chris Ward, who proposed the program's creation.Ward initially sought to allocate .9 million of the city's 8.5 million federal CARES Act funding for the program, but that amount was pared down following disagreement from other council members."The current .1 million is a start to what I hope is continued relief for residents, especially since this program gives us a mechanism to add funds as they become available," Ward said.To be eligible for the program, households:-- must be located within the city of San Diego-- have a household income at or below 60% of the San Diego Area Median Income-- must not be receiving any rental subsidies-- must not be a tenant of a property owned or managed by the housing commission-- must not have savings to meet their financial needs-- must have eligible immigration status-- must have experienced hardships directly related to COVID-19Priority will be given to families with children and households with people age 62 and older. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials confirmed 330 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, increasing the region's total to 46,331, but no new deaths, with that total remaining at 775.Five new community outbreaks were confirmed as of Friday, three in business settings, one in a restaurant/bar and one in a government setting. From Sept. 19 to Sept. 25, 18 community outbreaks were confirmed. The number of community outbreaks remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.The county reported 9,914 tests as of Friday and the percentage of new laboratory-confirmed cases was 3%.The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 3.3%. The target is less than 8%. The seven-day daily average of tests is 8,561.Sixteen new cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday by San Diego State University, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,064 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Friday.Of the students living on campus, 380 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 663 positive cases, health services said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,867 new COVID-19 infections, a new record, eclipsing the previous one of 2,287 last Friday by nearly 800 cases, marking more than 100,000 total cases in the county since the pandemic began.Friday marked the third consecutive day more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 11th day with more than 1,000 new cases and the 19th of the last 22 to reach that mark. It is just the fifth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.The data released Friday, along with 23 deaths, raises the region's cumulative totals to 102,466 confirmed infections and 1,137 deaths.Of 25,002 tests reported Friday, 11 percent returned positive, raising the 14-day average of new cases to 8% -- a record.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals still have 18% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11-county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-based medical equipment manufacturer ResMed Corp. has agreed to pay more than .5 million to resolve allegations that it paid kickbacks to suppliers, sleeps labs and other health care providers in exchange for referrals and prescriptions for its products, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday.The government accused ResMed of violating the Anti-Kickback Statute of the False Claims Act by providing free or below-cost medical equipment to companies in several states.
