SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California has elected its youngest state lawmaker in more than eight decades. It elevated a 25-year-old progressive Democrat who already has years of legislative experience to the state Assembly. Alex Lee survived a crowded nine-candidate primary election in March, then trounced his Republican rival in a San Francisco Bay Area district that includes part of Silicon Valley. He plans to keep living with his mom in San Jose for the time being and had to take a part-time gig economy delivery job to make ends meet during his campaign. Lee has worked for five different lawmakers either as a college intern or more recently a paid aide. 671

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The chair of the California Democratic Party took a leave of absence Monday amid an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against him.Eric Bauman's leave will last until an outside investigation ends, party spokesman Mike Roth said."Chair Bauman believes this decision is the best way to ensure the independence and integrity of the process," Roth said in a statement. "The Party is confident that the procedures in place will allow for all parties to come forward freely and provide for a thorough and complete review."A party vice chair accused Bauman last week of sexually harassing and assaulting several unnamed people at party functions and called for Bauman's resignation. Others including California U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna and the Orange County Young Democrats called for Bauman to step aside.Daraka Larimore-Hall, the vice chair, spoke to two accusers and a witness, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported.Bauman announced an outside investigation on Saturday."I take seriously any allegation brought forward by anyone who believes they have been caused pain," Bauman said in a statement. "I look forward to putting these allegations behind us and moving forward as unified Democrats."The party's executive board could vote to remove Bauman from office. But Larimore-Hall's call for Bauman's removal is still several steps from such a vote.In a letter to the party last week, Larimore-Hall said stories from Bauman's accusers illustrate a "clear and escalating pattern" of inappropriate behavior.Larimore-Hall did not respond to a request for comment Monday from The Associated Press.Bauman's leave comes just weeks after California Democrats made major gains in the midterm elections, winning key congressional seats in territory long held by Republicans.A series of sexual misconduct allegations against lawmakers, lobbyists and others in politics rocked California's political world late last year, at the height of the #MeToo movement. Three Democratic men resigned as state lawmakers after investigators hired by the Legislature found they likely engaged in inappropriate behavior.Bauman narrowly won the party chairmanship last year against Kimberly Ellis after a contentious battle between establishment Democrats and progressive activists.During that fight, Bauman said he was falsely targeted by rumors he engaged in inappropriate behavior with teenage boys. Bauman is the party's first openly gay chairman.Bauman called the rumors "despicable lies," and Ellis denounced them.First Vice Chair Alex Rooker will take over Bauman's duties while the investigation proceeds. 2628

Robert Trump, President Donald Trump’s younger brother, has died, the White House confirmed late Saturday. The cause of his death was not immediately known.President Trump visited his brother at a New York City hospital on Friday, one day before his brother’s passing.President Trump issued a brief statement following his brother’s passing:“It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight. He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace.”On Friday, the president addressed his brother's condition before heading to New York City. "I have a wonderful brother," Trump said on Friday. "We've had a great relationship for a long time, from day one, so long time ago. And he’s in the hospital right now. Hopefully he’ll be alright, but he’s – he’s pretty – he’s having a hard time."Robert Trump, who also was a prominent member of the Trump Organization, was one of President Trump's four siblings. Robert Trump was preceded in death by their oldest brother Fred Trump Jr, who died in 1981. The president has two surviving sisters, Maryanne Trump Barry and Elizabeth Trump Grau.Joe Biden, Trump's opponent in this year's election, released a statement early Sunday following the announcement. "Mr. President, Jill and I are sad to learn of your younger brother Robert’s passing," Biden said. "I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one — and I know how important family is in moments like these. I hope you know that our prayers are with you all." 1640

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California state Senate has approved a measure that would guarantee all registered voters get a ballot in the mail before the November election. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has already ordered ballots to be mailed. But Republicans have sued, arguing his order is illegal. The bill that cleared the Senate on Thursday is an attempt by lawmakers to make sure it happens anyway. Most California voters already vote by mail. Still, some Republican state senators opposed the bill because it would let election officials count mail-in ballots if they are received within 20 days of the election instead of three days. 651

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Lawmakers can avoid the long lines plaguing California's Department of Motor Vehicles offices by visiting an office near the Capitol not open to the public, a decades-old practice under fresh fire as wait times surge. The office provides services for current and retired lawmakers, their staff and some other state employees, The Sacramento Bee reported Thursday. DMV spokesman Artemio Armenta said its primary purpose is to handle constituent requests that arrive on lawmakers' desks and that the two-member staff handles 10,000 requests per year. But one lawmaker said it shouldn't provide extra perks for the Capitol community as regular Californians are forced to wait up to hours in line for services at their local office.RELATED: Shorter lines? Larger DMV planned for Hillcrest"I have gotten my registration and all that stuff the old-fashioned way like everybody else in my district," Republican Assemblyman Jim Patterson told the Bee. "When you are living a public life the way most private people live, you'll understand when taxes hurt and bureaucracies hurt."Patterson's colleagues rejected his request to audit the DMV on Wednesday, and lawmakers have recently approved more money for the agency to deal with its exploding wait times.DMV officials said the long lines are due to complications complying with new federally mandated security upgrades for ID cards. In late 2020, airport security checkpoints will require so-called "Real ID" compliant cards, and Californians are now beginning to get the updated cards.RELATED: California lawmakers ask DMV officials about long linesLawmakers have approved tens of millions of dollars to hire more staff and implement the roll-out of Real ID. The DMV recently announced it would open more than a dozen offices on Saturdays.Whether lawmakers and Capitol staff should get access to a private DMV has been disputed before. Some people who work in and around the Capitol downplayed the office's existence in response to the Bee article, saying it's been known about for years. A 2006 Capitol Weekly article highlighted the debate over the office, referencing a small-government activist who criticized it for years. The office has been open for decades, moving locations around the Capitol. At one point it was open to the public. Now, the office is unmarked at the end of a hallway in the Legislative Office Building, located across the street from the Capitol.RELATED: State report: California DMV worker slept thousands of hours on the jobWhen a reporter stopped by on Friday, the door was locked and a woman who answered directed all questions to the public affairs office.Armenta, the DMV spokesman, said the door is locked because the office handles cash transactions and holds people's personally identifiable information. About 90 percent of the office's work relates to requests from constituents who call their lawmakers over complicated problems the local DMV branch may not be able to solve, he said."Often times it's a conduit for constituent work," Armenta said. "It provides the Legislature a way to be closely in contact with state government on helping customers with situations that they're having."Spokespeople for Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins did not respond to questions about whether it's appropriate for lawmakers to get services at the office. 3398
