Researchers in Germany have recently published a study finding that a small percentage of people have developed an addiction to shopping. The October 2019 study released in Comprehensive Psychiatry explores the addictive response to shopping. The study found that 1 in 20 of adults developed an addiction to shopping. The researchers dubbed the addiction as "buying-shopping disorder" (BSD), which "is characterized by extreme preoccupations with and craving for buying/shopping and by irresistible and identity-seeking urges to possess consumer goods."While the study looked at shopping more broadly, the researchers believe that the ability to shop online is feeding the addiction. "As e-commerce provides an important shopping environment, traditional BSD may migrate into the online retail market," the study states. ROME — Italy has become the country with the most coronavirus-related deaths, surpassing China by registering 3,405 dead.Italy reached the gruesome milestone on the same day the epicenter of the pandemic, Wuhan, China, recorded no new infections. Overall, China on Thursday counted 3,249 dead, 156 fewer than Italy, according to the Johns Hopkins University virus map.Both Italy’s death toll and its new infections shot up again, adding 427 more dead and 5,322 more infections. Overall, Italy has recorded 41,035 infections, more than half of the world’s positive cases.Italy’s health care system has been overwhelmed by the virus, and on Thursday a visiting Chinese Red Cross team criticized the failure of Italians to fully quarantine and take the national lockdown seriously. 790

Sen. Rand Paul defended why he opted to not self-quarantine while awaiting for the results from a COVID-19 test he took last week. On Sunday, Paul's office announced that the the U.S. senator from Kentucky tested positive for coronavirus. Paul's office said he was asymptomatic and feeling fine. Paul continued to work on Capitol Hill until he learned of his positive test.Although Paul was not around many staffers, he was in close proximity of a number of fellow senators. Republican senators Mitt Romney and Mike Lee opted to self-quarantine following Paul's announcement. Paul's office said that staffers began working remotely 10 days ago and he had virtually no direct contact with his staff. “Given that my wife and I had traveled extensively during the weeks prior to COVID-19 social distancing practices, and that I am at a higher risk for serious complications from the virus due to having part of my lung removed seven months ago, I took a COVID-19 test when I arrived in D.C. last Monday," Paul said in a statement. "I felt that it was highly unlikely that I was positive since I have had no symptoms of the illness, nor have I had contact with anyone who has either tested positive for the virus or been sick."The CDC issued the following guidelines for testing:Hospitalized patients who have signs and symptoms compatible with COVID-19 in order to inform decisions related to infection control.Other symptomatic individuals such as, older adults (age ≥ 65 years) and individuals with chronic medical conditions and/or an immunocompromised state that may put them at higher risk for poor outcomes (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, receiving immunosuppressive medications, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease).Any persons including healthcare personnel, who within 14 days of symptom onset had close contact with a suspect or laboratory-confirmed4 COVID-19 patient, or who have a history of travel from affected geographic areas5 (see below) within 14 days of their symptom onset.Paul believed he should have been tested because of a preexisting condition."The nature of COVID-19 put me – and us all – in a Catch-22 situation," Paul said. "I didn’t fit the criteria for testing or quarantine. I had no symptoms and no specific encounter with a COVID-19 positive person. I had, however, traveled extensively in the U.S. and was required to continue doing so to vote in the Senate. That, together with the fact that I have a compromised lung, led me to seek testing. Strong opioid dosage is the topic of a two-day public hearing by the Food and Drug Administration — which is trying to discern the benefits and risks.For Katrina King, her opioid addiction began with a back injury. It got so bad she spent two years behind bars after getting caught with forged prescriptions. King blames being put on high-dose medication too strong for her injury."The extended release — introducing that into the picture as such a potent dose so early in my diagnosis without trying anything else — ended up being catastrophic," she said.Some people have suggested the FDA remove high-dose opioids form the market to fight the deadly epidemic. Others argue the stronger meds are necessary to manage pain for some patients and getting rid of it could worsen pain for those people, leading to potential suicides."We don't want to cause additional suffering for people who have unmanageable pain that does make them feel they don't want to live anymore. On the other side of that, I would challenge the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA to come up with other methods of pain control," King said.The FDA will review public comments and decide whether to make change, which could include tougher regulations on reducing the use of high-dose opioids. 1276

Taco Bell has a tortilla problem.The chain said that some restaurants are experiencing supplier shortages of tortillas, and that it is "working diligently to replenish the supply." Taco Bell, which has about 7,000 locations in the United States, did not share how many restaurants are dealing with shortages."We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause," Taco Bell added in a statement. The tortillas are used for its quesadillas and burritos.Some exasperated social media users complained about the limited menu on Twitter."I am at one of your Greater Rochester area locations and they are out of tortillas!" One user wrote on July 1. Another user complained on June 30 of shortages at a location in Rome, New York. A number said they were told by staff that the Taco Bell shortage is happening at locations nationwide.The shortages do not appear to be impacting Taco Bell's competitors.In response to queries, Chipotle and Qdoba told CNN Business that they are not experiencing shortages.
