QINGDAO, Aug.19 (Xinhua) - China's largest marine patrol departed Thursday from Qingdao to Vladivostok, a coastal city in east Russia, participating in a multilateral joint drill.The joint drill is to be held from Aug.22 to 27, with the theme of "enforcing emergency responses to illegal actions threatening joint marine security".The North Pacific Coast Guard Agencies Forum (NPCGF) promoted the multilateral joint drill in 2009.Current members of NPCGF, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States, participate in the drill."The joint drill mainly focuses on arms trafficking and illegal migration, including searching, boarding and examining suspicious ships," said Wu Shaojun, captain of Marine Patrol 11.Chinese Marine Patrol 11, Marine Surveillance 83 and helicopters and ships from other countries will participate in the joint drill, said Wu.Chinese Marine Surveillance 83 left for Russia on Aug.13 from Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province.NPCGF, initiated by the Japan Coast Guard in 2000, is an organization devoted to fostering multilateral cooperation on illegal drug trafficking, maritime security, fisheries enforcement, illegal migration and heightened maritime awareness.Member states take turns hosting the annual forum. China joined the forum in 2004.The 3000-tonne Marine Patrol 11, China's largest patrol ship, is 114 meters long and equipped with high-speed rescue boats and a helicopter hangar. The helicopters can take off and land on Marine Patrol 11 even when waves reach 6 meters and wind speeds are as high as 11 to 14 meters per second.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Amid sirens and blaring horns, people across China Sunday stood in tribute to victims of a massive mudslide in a remote northwest town.Chinese leaders, students, workers and members of the public paused for three minutes from 10 a.m. Sunday, a week after the devastating mudslide hit Zhouqu County, in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province.At least 1,248 people have died and 496 are listed as missing.Chinese President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and other top Chinese leaders stood and paid silent tribute to the victims at the beginning of a meeting by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee held in Beijing on Sunday morning.DEEP GRIEFAt the Dongjie Village in Zhouqu, more than 5,000 rescuers and villagers stood still on the debris of mudslide, bowing their heads in commemoration of those killed in the disaster.A huge black banner hung in front of the mourners, and wreaths lay on the ground. BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official has called for more efforts to promote increased awareness about energy-savings among the public and increase investments into research for energy-saving technologies.Vice Premier Li Keqiang made the remark in his letter to sponsors of China's 20th national energy-saving publicity week (June 12 to June 18) that ended on Friday.Various campaigns and promotional activities were held during the week to increase awareness about conserving energy among all communities and also promote energy-saving practices, Li said in the letter.Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said government should put more investment into research for energy-saving technologies.Additionally, long-term mechanisms for energy-savings should be established so that the 11th Five-Year Plan energy-saving goals could be realized, Li said.China seeks to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent in 2010 compared to 2005 levels, according to the country's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010).The 20th national energy-saving publicity week was sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission and 13 other government agencies.
