SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local gym owners are faced with another difficult decision as San Diego County moves into the purple tier, the most restrictive of the state’s classifications of COVID-19 spread.Under the new regulations, gyms may not operate indoors, meaning those who cannot operate outdoors will be mandated to close.The restrictions take effect Saturday.RELATED: County moves into California's COVID-19 purple tier“You want your members happy. You want your staff happy. You’ve got to put food on your table. And you’re trying to do the right thing, you’re wearing a mask and you’re indoors, so it’s going to be just an unbelievable, worrisome time,” said Bryan Welch, general manager of the Point Loma Sports Club.Welch said the new restrictions will not have a significant impact on his gym because the Point Loma Sports Club had already moved 90% of its operations outside. But he said he empathizes with gyms that do not have usable outdoor space or a cooperative landlord.Even some gym owners that can move outside may not choose to do so. They say limits would force them to operate at an untenable loss, leaving them to choose between operating indoors in violation of public health orders or going out of business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s almost time to welcome back the nail-biting excitement of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.This year’s countywide bee will be held on March 15 at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station.Roughly 100 spellers are expected to take the stage, making competition fierce.Last year was an exciting year for the competition as it saw its youngest speller ever, Edith Fuller of Oklahoma, who was only 5-years-old when she qualified.Fuller went all the way to the national stage. The spelling bee has been around for more than nine decades.The bee was founded in 1925 and has been held every year since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.In 2017, the competition celebrated its 90th National Spelling Bee.2017’s winning word was marocain, which is “a ribbed crepe fabric used in women's clothing.”The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin May 29 and end on May 31.  943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki.The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations.The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090
