SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Voting in San Diego County Tuesday has been a relatively smooth experience, even with higher-than-normal turnout, a San Diego County spokesman said.Michael Workman, county communications director, said workers at the Registrar of Voters have been very busy. San Diego (KGTV) -- A 41-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Monday night when she was hit by an SUV while crossing the street in Pacific Beach.Police say the collision happened shortly before 10:40 p.m. on Grand Avenue west of Mission Bay Drive.A 24-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee eastbound of Grand Avenue while the victim was crossing the street southbound, then stepped off the center median and was struck by the Jeep. Paramedics took the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with major injuries. She is expected to survive.The driver remained at the scene. 591

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A compromise in San Diego’s short-term rental debate may help the city get answers.In a news conference, San Diego City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell announced a compromise between “United Here,” which represents more than 6,000 local hotel, gaming, and hospitality workers, and Expedia Group, which is the parent company for short-term rental brands.Both sides have agreed on rules that Campbell said could help regulate the short-term rental industry -- by providing a balance between the hospitality industry and preserving the right of homeowners to use their property to help make ends meet.Under this agreement, it would cap the number of short-term rental permits that were granted and also establish a 2-night minimum stay.In turn, residents will be allowed to home share and those who rent out their homes part time -- usually during big events like Comic-Con, Pride, or December Nights -- wouldn’t have to pay the full permit costs.There will also be strict enforcement of the Good Neighbor Policy, which would include fines for those who violate it and possibly having permits revoked for repeat violations.This plan will be sent to the full council for further review. 1210

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego is the seventh-best university and the best public school in the country, according to just-released rankings from Washington Monthly.UCSD fell slightly in the nonprofit magazine's rankings compared to 2017, when the school ranked sixth overall but second to Texas A&M among public universities. Harvard took over the top spot on the list from Stanford, first on last year's list, with MIT, Princeton and Yale rounding out the top five.Washington Monthly ranks schools based on a number of factors, the theme being how positively each school impacts its community and the country at large.
