Two businesses decided to close their doors for a day in reaction to white supremacist Richard Spencer’s speech at Michigan State University. The Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan said it got a call from Attorney Kyle Bristow. He wanted to book a meeting on Sunday at the club for about 100 people.  “It was a law firm having a meet and greet. I didn’t think anything negative about it,” said Carsten Grotioh of the Carpathian Club.  “Then Sterling Heights Police came in and asked to speak to management.  They told me they heard there was going to be a Neo-Nazi gathering here on Sunday.”Grotioh learned that Bristow had represented Spencer as a lawyer, and the meeting was supposed to include Spencer’s supporters. He didn’t just cancel the reservation. He closed his business for the day. The owner of the Tipsy McStagger Pub in Warren said he had a similar experience. He got a call from Bristow’s Foundation for the Market Place of Ideas. He was told the organization wanted to host a networking meeting on Monday. When someone came into his business and informed him the networking involved people who supported a white nationalist, he says he was disgusted. “I said absolutely not are they coming to our bar. I mean, we are a neighborhood bar. I have been in this community 50 years. I retired from the Warren Police Department. I have seen enough hate. Our bar is what it is. It is a neighborhood bar. Everyone is welcome,” said John Vostoris, the owner of Tipsy McStagger Pub. Vostoris also decided to close his business to avoid any gathering there by people who planned to attend the event. The Anti Defamation League says standing up to hate, while not infringing on free speech is exactly what everyone needs to do.“It is not something we want to see in our state,” said Heidi Budaj, the ADL’s Michigan Regional Director. She says the fear is hate speech leads to action.  Nationwide there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2016 to 2017. In Michigan, there was a 13% increase overall. “We want our state to be known as a welcoming place that embraces diversity. A place where we stand up against hate,” said Budaj. Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit reached out to the leader of the Foundation for the Market Place and asked if they rescheduled their meeting. Bristow said he suddenly resigned from the group because of the media’s vilification of him and his message.  2520

US investigators wiretapped former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort under secret court orders before and after the election, sources tell CNN, an extraordinary step involving a high-ranking campaign official now at the center of the Russia meddling probe.The government snooping continued into early this year, including a period when Manafort was known to talk to President Donald Trump.Some of the intelligence collected includes communications that sparked concerns among investigators that Manafort had encouraged the Russians to help with the campaign, according to three sources familiar with the investigation. Two of these sources, however, cautioned that the evidence is not conclusive.Special counsel Robert Mueller's team, which is leading the investigation into Russia's involvement in the election, has been provided details of these communications.A secret order authorized by the court that handles the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) began after Manafort became the subject of an FBI investigation that began in 2014. It centered on work done by a group of Washington consulting firms for Ukraine's former ruling party, the sources told CNN.The surveillance was discontinued at some point last year for lack of evidence, according to one of the sources.The FBI then restarted the surveillance after obtaining a new FISA warrant that extended at least into early this year.Sources say the second warrant was part of the FBI's efforts to investigate ties between Trump campaign associates and suspected Russian operatives. Such warrants require the approval of top Justice Department and FBI officials, and the FBI must provide the court with information showing suspicion that the subject of the warrant may be acting as an agent of a foreign power.It is unclear when the new warrant started. The FBI interest deepened last fall because of intercepted communications between Manafort and suspected Russian operatives, and among the Russians themselves, that reignited their interest in Manafort, the sources told CNN. As part of the FISA warrant, CNN has learned that earlier this year, the FBI conducted a search of a storage facility belonging to Manafort. It's not known what they found.The conversations between Manafort and Trump continued after the President took office, long after the FBI investigation into Manafort was publicly known, the sources told CNN. They went on until lawyers for the President and Manafort insisted that they stop, according to the sources.It's unclear whether Trump himself was picked up on the surveillance.The White House declined to comment for this story. A spokesperson for Manafort didn't comment for this story.Manafort previously has denied that he ever "knowingly" communicated with Russian intelligence operatives during the election and also has denied participating in any Russian efforts to "undermine the interests of the United States."The FBI wasn't listening in June 2016, the sources said, when Donald Trump Jr. led a meeting that included Manafort, then campaign chairman, and Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law, with a Russian lawyer who had promised negative information on Hillary Clinton.That gap could prove crucial as prosecutors and investigators under Mueller work to determine whether there's evidence of a crime in myriad connections that have come to light between suspected Russian government operatives and associates of Trump. 3458

Vice president-elect Kamala Harris confirmed Thursday that her husband would assume the title of "second gentleman" when she is sworn in next month.Because Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, will be the first man to serve as the spouse of the Vice President, there was some question as to his title. The only people to serve in the role have been women, and all have been referred to as the "second lady."While most media outlets, like the writing-style standard-bearer Associated Press, had already been referring to Emhoff as the second gentlemen, Harris confirmed Emhoff's new title on the record during an interview with CNN on Thursday."I think that the term has evolved into the second gentleman," Harris said.CNN anchor Jake Tapper joked that he preferred the title "second dude," and Harris added that some of Emhoff's friends might be "inclined to call him that."When asked if Harris would call Emhoff the "second gentleman," Harris joked that she would call him "honey."Emhoff, a lawyer, has said he will leave his law practice on Inauguration Day to focus his time in his new role. UNION, Ky. — A 17-year-old girl faked a school shooting threat at Ryle High School in Union, Kentucky because she didn't want to go to class on Wednesday, according to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff's Office. Classes are still on, but she'll get her wish. The girl was arrested Tuesday night and booked into the Campbell County Juvenile Detention Center. The threat, which deputies said she made herself but pretended to have received via Snapchat, was the fourth of its kind targeted at Ryle in just two days. Three other teenagers — two 15-year-olds and one 17-year-old — were arrested Monday for making "terroristic threats."The girl's mother called police Tuesday night, Sgt. Philip Ridgell wrote in the news release. She believed her daughter had just received a threat reading, "since nobody showed up to school today just sat till tomorrow, i'm going to drive past the cafeteria during 3rd lunch and just shoot non stop."In reality, Ridgell said, the girl had created it. Deputies who questioned her about the threat noted inconsistent responses and ultimately learned she had posted it to her own Snapchat story because she did not want to go to school.After confessing, she tried to flee on foot. Deputies caught her, arrested her and took her to the detention center."We will continue with classes tomorrow as normal," Boone County Schools wrote in an emailed statement. "We will continue to have additional staff and law enforcement on campus to help our staff and students feel safe." 1553

VANCOUVER – A Canadian choir performed a COVID-19 parody of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and it may be just what you need to get through the holidays.The parody posted online is called “I Will Social Distance From You” and it was performed by the Virtual Pop Choir, operated by The Chorus Studio in Vancouver.The choir made several lyrical edits throughout the song to better apply to the turbulent times we’re living in this holiday season.Along with asking people to keep their distance, the choir has a few other things on their wish list this Christmas, like a mask that doesn’t fog up glasses and fashionable PPE.They also jokingly refer to Santa Claus as a super-spreader and tell him to “get the f*** out of my face” multiple times.The choir also touches on the popular opinion that 2020 has been bad as a whole.“All of 2020 has been a steaming dump. We’re out of toilet paper, can’t even wipe our butts. And everyone is wondering, is a vaccine really coming? Murder hornets, Q’anon, wildfires, anti-maskers,” the choir sang.At the end of the song, the singers say all they really want is to see their choir and safely sing in harmony.“Even though we’re still apart, I hold you fiercely in my heart. Together, we’ll pull through! I will social distance, from you!”According to their website, the Virtual Pop Choir was created in response to the pandemic. The group is made up of more than 70 singers who are also teachers, lawyers, students, actors, business owners, contractors, nurses and firefighters.
