SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley.One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley.In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building.If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy.The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla. The store was opened in 1948 when the niece of Ellen B. Scripps along with her husband and son established the business. 1507

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of minor city code violations have forced the Hillcrest Farmers Market to make changes to their layout, resulting in a handful of vendors losing their spot.Market officials tell 10News they didn't get any officials citations or warnings, but they heard from police and the fire marshal in the past few weeks about the problems, and have worked with the city to address all of them.One, in particular, has led to the most disruption. Fire officials told the market they needed to keep a 20-foot buffer between the booths and the median on Normal Street, to allow enough room for a fire truck to drive through. To accommodate that, the market had to remove about 30 of its 200 vendor spots. Some of the booths were put in the north parking lot of the DMV, but 13 vendors still haven't returned to the market.Also, market officials say they had gotten complaints from local churches and business about parking and people crossing the street without using crosswalks near the vendor parking lot. To change that, they've hired a parking attendant to oversee the lot. The attendant also directs non-vendors to the free parking areas at nearby schools."All these changes have made things better," says Market Manager Mark Larson. He says it's been an adjustment, but the feedback has been great from both customers and vendors."Sales are up," Larson says while pointing out that the extra walking room has made it easier for families and people with strollers to navigate the market.The market also plans to expand onto Harvey Milk Street to make room for the vendors who lost their spot. They're also looking into adding a concert stage for live music. To do that, they need to re-submit their permit to the city. That could take a few months, but they're hopeful it will make the market better in the long run. 1852

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Republican candidate is finally in the race to become San Diego's next mayor.Thus far, the campaign to be the city's next leader has been dominated by Democrats, with no household Republicans stepping in.But earlier this month, Bay Park resident Richard Hansen re-registered from a decline-to-state to Republican in his own quest to succeed Republican Kevin Faulconer, who is termed out in 2020."I saw that there was a vacuum regarding the Republican Party putting up a candidate for mayor, and so I see a path to victory here in San Diego," Hansen said. Hansen, an ardent supporter of President Trump, is a former Democrat who left that party in 2016. He never re-registered with a party because he said he took issue with elitists in both the Democrat and Republican Parties. Hansen said, however, that he aligns with President Trump on issues such as the Second Amendment, the Border Wall, and abortion. "I just felt that Donald Trump, even though he is a billionaire, he's the blue collar billionaire," said Hansen, a real estate broker, who added he would serve the entire community as mayor. Candidates have until Dec. 5 to file nomination papers with the city of San Diego. The position is technically non-partisan. As it stands, Democrats outnumber Republicans in registration by a near two to one margin, 318,507 to 162,004. Additionally, there are more decline-to-state voters, 242,522, than Republicans in the city. "It's a blue city," said John Dadian, a political analyst. "We may have a super-duper majority on the City Council of Democrats, maybe more than exists right now, so it's just not feasible, quite honestly."A recent 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll found Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry in the race. Both are Democrats. It remains to be seen whether a household GOP candidate will emerge. Tony Krvaric, who heads the Republican Party of San Diego, said he did not know Hansen and that he has encouraged current City Councilman Scott Sherman to run. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Marine Corps. family won a -million lawsuit against Lincoln Military Housing after they say mold sickened their children.The Charvat family moved to San Diego's military housing near the Marine Corps. Recruitment Depot in April 2015. Father and husband Matthew worked at MCRD.The lawsuit lists disturbing symptoms the family dealt with, including "diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, irritated eyes, watery eyes, fatigue, stuffy nose, sinus congestion, itchy skin, sneezing, sore and dry throat, chest tightness, runny nose, lethargy."Anna, 9, was brought to tears when she described what she and her family endured, "my breathing was bad, I got sick a lot and my brother," she said choking up.Her mother, Leigh, said she had to take Anna to the emergency room after Anna woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air.When it came to her 6-year-old son Johnathan, "you could hear him breathing downstairs, it was very loud we used to say he sounded like Darth Vader."She said she tried everything from a different diet to going to doctors to try and figure out why her family was sick."I felt everyone thought I was crazy. Doctors, family thought I was crazy," she said in anguish. Then, the family found vents covered in black mold."It was shocking, I was disgusted," Leigh said, but she was also relieved to find an answer."Okay this is it, let’s get rid of it and let’s get on with our lives so we can get back to the way things were," she said.The lawsuit stated the defendant, Lincoln Military Housing, "negligently, improperly, recklessly and in a non-controlled manner, exposing Plaintiffs to excessive moisture, dampness, and humidity, as well as microbial contamination."Leigh said the company tried to "put a band-aide" on the situation and didn't try to find the source of the mold, "we were still sick after all their attempts to clean."The family moved out and had to throw away toys and furniture to keep from contaminating their new home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was arrested Sunday morning after police say he crashed into a police car during a chase in La Mesa.The crash happened around 1 a.m. on Spring Street and University Avenue. Police say they were called to an area bar when a man involved in a fight got into his car and drove away.The chase was brief and ended when the suspect struck the police car. The driver was taken into custody for weapons charges and driving under the influence, police say.No one was injured in the crash. 513
