SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With some local school districts starting distance learning in about two weeks, some parents have been dealing with the emotions that these changes bring.ABC 10News has been following several local families as they navigate the ups and downs of this unusual year.Patrick Batten has accepted that the school year will start virtually. “It’s kind of bittersweet. We understand where we are in the situation, so we’re accepting that, but it it’s still upsetting we can’t send our kids back to school yet,” Batten said.Three of his four children are in the Poway Unified School District. At this point, the district plans to be virtual through December. Knowing that, the Battens are still looking into options on how to make it work with both Patrick and his wife working full-time.“Even though we’re in the same house, that almost makes it worse. We understand our children need help, but can’t provide it to them,” Batten said, when talking about working at home while the children conduct classes at home. “You feel a sense of helplessness... we have to have somebody that can come in and help us.”Whatever they decide will be a financial strain, costing their family at least several hundred dollars a month.Tancy Campbell’s two kids are in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. When ABC 10News spoke to her in July, she agreed with distance learning. Now, she is more conflicted.“As long as they’re social distanced and properly monitored, maybe it would be okay. While I’m okay with them starting at home currently, I do want the push to get them back into school and on a schedule sooner than later,” Campbell said.Campbell said there was more computer time than she anticipated for her nine-year-old. She thought there would be more independent assignments.For her 5-year-old son with autism, she is not sure how beneficial distance learning will be for him. He is on an IEP, or Individualized Education Program.“He has to have so many minutes of speech and occupational therapy from the school district, so I’m not sure how they’re going to work that in,” Campbell said. She said because of COVID-19, she has noticed her does not want to leave the house and has trouble dressing in regular clothes.Sweetwater Union High School District started earlier this month. ABC 10News interviewed Gina Chavez, a mother of three, who said the first day was “crazy.”It is unclear when any of the local districts will be returning to in-person instruction. 2483

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Vandals damaged a park in Sabre Springs Thursday night, dumping sand into toilets and scrawling inappropriate graffiti on the walls. Trash cans were emptied out and piles of wood chips were dumped along the entrance to the South Creek Neighborhood Park. The clogged toilets and sinks caused minor flooding in the bathrooms. Some of the plumbing was also damaged, according to the San Diego Police Department. City crews cleaned up the mess by the afternoon. Police were still searching for the culprits Friday. 537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While hundreds of thousands of San Diego County residents are receiving the mail-in ballots they asked for this week, some residents are receiving mail-in ballots whether they asked for them or not.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu tells 10News about 41,000 people this election is living in precincts where there are not enough voters to field a polling place."When you think about all those political jurisdictions participating in the election and all those boundary lines that overlap one another, it's going to create various pockets throughout the entire county," says Vu.YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE: Local, national 2018 election newsVu says any precinct with fewer than 250 registered voters can become an automatic mail ballot district. In those cases, all registered voters in the district will receive a mail ballot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A mother from Sacramento is back in San Diego to search for her missing son, a San Diego State graduate who was living in Pacific Beach.Wesley Billingsly was last heard from on June 12, 2018. He was supposed to meet friends for dinner in Pacific Beach, but never showed up.Since then, there has been no sign of him.He is 5’8”, 130 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair. He has several tattoos.Christel Billingsly, Wesley’s mother, has spent her days posting fliers, reaching out to people on social media, and keeping up with the San Diego Police missing person’s investigation into her son’s disappearance.“He was here actively driving these streets, going to that Vons to get gas,” she said while standing in a Vons parking lot on Garnet Avenue. “And then he just disappears?”She is offering a ,000 reward to anyone who helps bring her son home.“I know somebody that's reading these posters knows where my son is,” she said. “They need to speak up and tell me where he is because this is enough, it's enough.”Back in August, Christel Billingsley flew to San Diego from Sacramento and spent her son's 25th birthday searching for him.Police located his vehicle in the South Bay but that has been the only trace of him. After that Christel Billingsly made her way to Mexico to search for him.“I went and met with the police in Mexico, I had a translator with me,” she said. “I went and filed a missing report,” she also checked morgues and jails.She said her son had earned a degree in business administration and marketing from SDSU. He moved back home to Sacramento briefly to work and save enough money to return to San Diego.Once he returned, he was staying with different friends at homes in Pacific Beach as he looked for jobs.Christel pays her son’s cellphone bill and said the phone stopped showing any activity once he disappeared.
