SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of La Jolla's most scenic spots is also the scene of a 20 year battle that has left the community divided.The Coastal Commission voted unanimously Thursday night to approve a measure to renew a 10-year permit to close the Children's Pool to human access during Harbor Seal Pupping season.The Children's Pool was built in 1931 to give kids a safe place to enjoy the beach.In the late 1990's, harbor seals moved in on the area creating conflict.Surveillance cameras captured visitors getting dangerously close to the seals causing the city to take action.In 2014, they decided to close the Children's Pool from December 15th through May 15th. This is typically the time period when mother seals use the beach to birth their calves.The California Coastal Commission agreed to try out this plan for five years.Dr. Jane Reldan, President of the Seal Conservancy, said the beach closure was an "elegant compromise." Reldan added that the closure happens during a time of year when it's cold and people don't want to go swimming anyways.Opponents say there's plenty of coastline for the seals to use and that it's time the Children's pool was given back to the kids. 1190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Passengers from the Grand Princess cruise ship will be quarantined at MCAS Miramar amid coronavirus fears, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Sunday.According to the Department, the ship will dock temporarily in a non-passenger port in the San Francisco Bay. Passengers will then be transferred to several federal military facilities throughout the country for medical screening, COVID-19 testing, and a 14-day quarantine. The earliest they could arrive is Tuesday, according to a DoD spokesperson.The nearly 1,000 passengers who are California residents will complete the quarantine at MCAS Miramar and Travis Air Force Base. It's unclear how many of the 1,000 passengers will be housed at Miramar. "MCAS Miramar is preparing to support HHS and their federally mandated quarantine for Grand Princess travelers," a spokesperson for the base said. "The safety, health and well-being of our guests and crew is always our top priority, and we continue to make every effort to ensure they are safe and comfortable while they remain onboard," Princess Cruises said in a statement.So far, 11 people in the U.S. have died from the virus and at least 400 cases have so far been reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses and healthcare workers gathered Friday morning demanding Palomar Health provide more nurses and PPE to support their staff as they see a surge in patients.Nurses said they are stretched thin and maxed out caring for our community during the pandemic."Palomar claims they took a hit due to the pandemic, but it's the nurses and caregivers who are taking the hit in the from of increased patient loads, unsafe staffing levels and inadequate PPE," ICU nurse Joanne Meza said.She and a group of healthcare workers held red signs reading "Save Lives, Safe Staffing Now."Palomar Health sent ABC 10News a statement stating they received a waiver from the California Department of Public Health Wednesday that would allow Palomar to "assign one ICU nurse to care for up to three patients, depending on patient acuity. The waiver, which only applies to one 12 bed unit which has both intensive and intermediate care patients located in the same area, has not been implemented and is only in preparation for a potential patient surge or reduction in workforce due to sickness."The law states safe ratios are one ICU nurse to two patients.Meza accused the hospital of furloughing employees while they knew the impact the pandemic would have.She also accused the hospital of commingling COVID and non-COVID patients. Palomar said that is "completely false. As a healthcare system, it is irresponsible to instill fear in our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than half of the San Diego-based breweries that participated in a fundraiser to help Camp Fire victims say they've completed their donation on time, according to research by the 10News team.In December, Sierra Nevada brewing asked breweries across the nation to brew "Resilience IPA" as a way to make money for the Butte Strong Fund.Sierra Nevada offered to provide the recipe and work with suppliers to get the ingredients donated. All the local brewers had to do was brew and sell the beer, and donate 100% of the proceeds to the fund.According to Sierra Nevada's Resilience IPA website, more than 1,400 breweries across the country signed up. That includes 43 in San Diego County.Sierra Nevada asked the brewers to finish selling Resilience IPA by April 30 and complete their donation by May 14.In an email sent to brewers on May 21, Sierra Nevada said that nearly half of the breweries still hadn't completed their donation.10News reached out to all 43 breweries in San Diego that took part in the effort to see if they're living up to their end of the fundraiser. We also asked how much money they were able to donate.Of the 43 San Diego breweries we called or emailed, 29 told us they had finished their donation and sent in a check. Those breweries sent more than 7,000 combined. Three breweries told us they haven't been able to finalize their donation. Eleven breweries have yet to respond to our questions.For Societe Brewery CEO Doug Constantiner, helping Camp Fire victims was personal."One of my really good friends lost his house in the fire," Constantiner says. "When we saw the email come through, there was no question about it. We knew we were on board and signed up right away."Societe brewed 20 barrels and raised ,000."I think people really got the message what the Resilience IPA was brewed for and were willing to put their dollars behind it, knowing it was going to a good cause," says Constantiner.San Diego-based AleSmith Brewing made a smaller, two-keg batch, but still raised ,400. "I can honestly never think of another time that another brewery's tap handle was on here at AleSmith," says Quality Supervisor Peter Cronin.He hopes that the breweries that haven't been able to finalize their donation will send the money soon."I'm hoping they didn't just use a big brewery's name, a quality brewery's name to market it a little bit," says Cronin. " And I hope they would donate the money from that beer.
