He said people need to be conscious of what part of the mask they touch."You want to be careful as you remove the mask in case you did come into contact with someone that is COVID positive that you don't touch the exterior of the mask and then touch your nose and mouth before washing your hands," he explained.So, Christman explained you should only touch the ear loops or mask ties when you remove it from your face for cleaning.And another tip -- if you wash your mask in your washing machine, you can use one of these mesh bags to prevent your mask from getting tangled with other pieces of laundry. TONGANOXIE, Kan. -- A small piece of fabric kept near a classroom door could help protect students in the event of an active shooter. It was three months ago that kindergarten teacher Tiffany Parker was sitting on her living room floor cutting up a fire hose. "One fire hose makes about 100-110 sections, and I had three hoses donated," said Parker, who teaches at Tonganoxie Elementary School in Kansas.Parker used to be the volleyball coach at Tonganoxie High School. She would use old fire hoses to line her practice drills. Now, the fire hose is keeping her classroom safe and secure when it's not just a drill. "We've always done the typical, you know, cover your window, lock your door, move away, but that never seemed to give us enough security," said Parker. On February 14, 2018, 17 students were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida. "You know, seeing my kids' faces when they were first told, 'OK, if somebody comes in, here's what we're going to do,' before I had the Safety Sleeve, and they were still a little fearful," said Parker. Now, in her classroom of 21 students, Parker keeps the 6-inch piece of fire hose hanging by a magnet near the top of her classroom door. In a matter of seconds, the "Safety Sleeve" can be in place."All you do with it is you place it over the door hanger arm, as far as it will go and then they can't get in the door, it won't open," said Parker. The day after the Parkland shooting, Parker brought the Safety Sleeve into her classroom at Tonganoxie Elementary School. After showing her students how it works, Parker said her students felt more secure. "There was such a sense of relief and a sense of security by my kids and a sense of, 'OK, this isn't going to be it,'" said Parker. Parker presented the DIY device to her school principal. Now, she's made hundreds of them for the entire Tonganoxie School District. While she's created a low-cost safety device, Parker said she has no plans to make any money off of the Safety Sleeve. "So many people have asked me, 'Are you going to patent it? You should sell it.' I am not looking to make a dime on kids' lives," said Parker. California, Ohio and South Dakota have already picked up on the idea. There are 725 days until the 2020 presidential election.  “I know people think it's a long way out, but the reality is the Iowa caucuses are likely to be 15 months from now, if not sooner,” says Dr. Lara Brown, the director of the Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University.Iowa is key. Several high-profile Democrats have already visited the state recently, and experts say it won't be long until some of them officially throw their hat in the ring.“I would imagine we're going to have some candidates announcing their runs either at the end of this year, so the end of December, or in the first two months of 2019,” says Brown.Brown published a book on presidential nominations and elections called “Jockeying for the American Presidency: The Political Opportunism of Aspirants.”Brown says Democrats can expect a crowded field, just like the Republicans had in 2016.While no one has officially announced a party candidate, a list of potential candidates has been building for months.“We're going to have a lot of different Democrats from a lot of different regions, trying to make the argument they're really the one to lead the party and bring the White House back to the Democrats.”While it's rare that an incumbent president loses a re-election campaign, Brown says President Trump is vulnerable.“It’s evident after the 2018 elections that the Republican party's base is shrinking,” she says. “They are not appealing to as many people as they used to. They say music is a universal language, something that can connect us on many different levels. So when it shows up where you least expect it, that makes it even more special.One woman's dream is translating across an entire community in more ways than she could have imagined.Listen closely and you can hear the sweet sound of jazz in one park. There's no band, and you can't see any speakers. But if you happen to stumble upon a small door tucked inside a tree trunk, you'll stumble upon your own personal performance."I was in awe to actually hear music coming out of a tree," says Bruce Bo-Wdry who lives near the park.He still remembers the moment he first heard music flowing from this sound totem, and seeing neighborhood kids share his excitement."They were all over it," Bo-Wdry recalls. "And then they go to the box and then they open up the door, and you can see the gleam on their little faces like awh you know!" Artist Nikki Pike came up with the idea. "I had a dream where there was a miniature opera singer singing in the hollow of the tree," Pike says. "And then I realized that maybe there was an opportunity." A sound totem in Denver, Colorado, was the first realization of that dream. From there she built more, putting the solar and battery powered music boxes in trees across her city, and filling them with music performed by people who live in those neighborhoods. "I sort of built the stage and they are the performers," Pike says. "So it's a real community effort." She doesn't share exactly where the totems are, instead she allows people's curiosity lead them to discovering music, art and community. An idea she believes can spread across the country."The leap in peoples mind to imagine them in their own community is easy," Pike says. "Whereas before when it was an idea and a drawing it was harder to imagine."While the totems add a special spark to the trees and communities they call home, Pike said these small spaces do so much more."I do think this is how you change the world," Pike says.
