ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Rare succulents grown along California's coastlines are under attack from poachers. Last week three South Korean nationals were charged with attempting to illegally export to Asia more than 0,000 in live Dudleya succulent plants. Federal authorities say the men pulled the plants out of the ground at remote state parks in Northern California and then brought them to a Vista nursery operated by one of the men. "What your seeing now, which is really detrimental, is that people are actually making so much money off of this stuff in some cases, that they're going out to habitat and just wholesale taking everything, just wreaking havoc," said Tony Gurnoe, Director of Horticulture at San Diego Botanic Garden.Part of the mission at San Diego Botanic Garden is to conserve rare and endangered plants and their ecosystems to preserve biodiversity."The natural world is under a lot of stress right now," says Ari Novy, President & CEO of San Diego Botanic Garden. Novy says the rare California succulents are a coveted treasure in several Asian countries. "Unfortunately in Asia there are a lot of really wonderful plant collectors, but there's a small minority that will go to any length to get plants they don't have, including imperiling plants in the wild and violating the law," said Novy. Two of the defendants have since fled the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. If convicted on all counts, the defendants face up to 10 years in federal prison.The stolen succulents are now being reestablished in their habitat by California Plant Rescue. 1609

FAIRBORN, Ohio — A 911 call during a regularly-scheduled installation exercise prompted a lockdown at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on Thursday.According to the base's Twitter account, officials were executing an active shooter training exercise in Area A of the base on Thursday when an "unknown individual" called 911, fearing the training was real. The call prompted a security sweep of the base and a lockdown call.Later, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base later clarified that there was never a "real world" active shooter on the base.  558

FALLBROOK (CNS) - Four residents were displaced Tuesday when a fire broke out in the garage and damaged part of their Fallbrook home, authorities said.The blaze was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. at a home in the 2000 block of Pomegranate Lane, off South Stage Coach Lane north of Fallbrook High School, according to North County Fire Protection District spokesman John Choi.Firefighters from the Oceanside and Camp Pendleton fire departments responded to the scene along with Cal Fire San Diego personnel to help douse the blaze, which fully engulfed the garage and extended into portions of the home and the attic, Choi said.Crews knocked down the flames within 35 minutes, but the fire caused extensive damage to the garage and minimal damage to the home, he said.No injuries were reported.The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help the displaced residents -- four adults and one pet -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 989

(KGTV) - Neighbors in Encinitas are warning people about the dangers of the Sago Palm after two dogs on the same street passed away from sago poisoning.Ronnie Steinau says her dog, Luna, died within 24 hours of eating some seeds from a Sago Palm."She was the happiest, tail wagging, loved everyone and 'she's the kind of dog that everyone loved because she was so sweet," Steinau says. "We had her for about a year. We miss her."After posting about Luna on social media groups, Steinau learned a neighbor had a similar experience."We had no idea there was something so deadly all around us," says Alissa Dalaut.Dalaut says her dog Saber ate some sago palm seeds in December and died a few days afterward, despite aggressive treatment from her vet."We felt horrible, and we wished we would have known how toxic and how fatal and how dangerous these plants are," says Dalaut.According to PetMD.com, the sago palm contains a toxin called Cycasin. It can cause severe liver damage. Other symptoms of sago poisoning include:VomitingBlood in fecesBloody diarrheaIcterus (yellow coloration of skin and gums)Increased thirstIncreased urineBruisingBleeding easily (coagulopathy, DIC)Neurological signs such as depression, circling, paralysis, seizures, comaDeathThe toxin is found in the sago roots, seeds and leaves. She has since had them all removed. Steinau also had a sago palm removed from her backyard and has plans to cut down another on her porch.Now the two women are warning others of the dangers in their neighborhood."If you have them in your yard and you have children or pets, you're asking for trouble," says Steinau.Steinau would also like nurseries to do a better job of telling people about the dangers associated with sago palms and other trees when they're sold. Facebook announced on Friday that the social network had exposed the private photos of millions of users without their permission.The company said a bug recently allowed third-party app developers to access photos people may not have shared publicly. Facebook believes as many as 6.8 million users could be affected.Photos that users started to upload to Facebook but did not post could have been accessed, along with images posted to Facebook Stories, Tomer Bar, an engineering director at Facebook, wrote in a blog post."We're sorry this happened," he added.Users' photos were exposed over a 12 day period in September, the blog post said.When asked why Facebook waited to inform the public of the issue, a Facebook spokesperson told CNN Business, "We have been investigating the issue since it was discovered to try and understand its impact so that we could ensure we are contacting the right developers and people affected by the bug. It then took us some time to build a meaningful way to notify people, and get translations done."The information Facebook gives to third-party app developers continues to be under scrutiny. Earlier this year, a data scientist working for Cambridge Analytica revealed the company had several years ago used the system to gather data on tens of millions of Americans.As a result of this bug, the company said it believes the photos could have been accessed by 1,500 apps built by 876 developers.Facebook said it will notify people potentially impacted by the bug. 1509
