BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has allocated 28.6 billion yuan (4.2 billion U.S. dollars) to support farmers, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement Monday.The bulk of the funding -- 18.6 billion yuan -- would be used to subsidize farmers in growing improved varieties of crops such as rice, corn, and cotton.The other 10 billion yuan would subsidize purchases of farm machinery such as sowers and reapers, said the statement issued to Xinhua.The funding aimed to improve motivation in agricultural production, and stabilize the country's grain production, according to the statement.Farmers across the country would be eligible for the subsidies.The funding was on top of 86.7 billion yuan of subsidy funding to grain-growing farmers nationwide in February.The financial support for agriculture came as severe drought continued in the nation's west and south.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a drought alert on Sunday warning the severe drought would continue over the next three days.The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Saturday the drought, which started at the beginning of February, had affected 69.6 million mu (4.64 million hectares) of arable land and left 12.7 million people and 8.4 million heads of livestock short of drinking water.

Randt Jr., former U.S. ambassador to China, at a lecture in Hong Kong on Friday.Randt said the potential trade friction, which should not be surprising given the dire economic situation and the upcoming mid- term elections in the United States, was more likely to come from the Congress rather than the administration.Randt, who had been U.S. ambassador to China from July 2001 to January 2009, said it was not surprising that the two countries should have disagreements given the differences in history, culture and the values."But the important thing is to keep in mind ... the awareness on both sides of the very important strategic interests we share," he added.The leaders in both Washington and Beijing understand that the two countries share strategic interests on many topics, Randt said, adding that he was "sure that the United States policy towards China has not changed.""More and more Americans are trying to know China, though the Chinese people still know the United States better than the Americans know China. BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China named and shamed more than 10,000 workshops and selling groups in dust and poisonous material-related industries last year in a bid to fight against occupational diseases, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).The figure was revealed at a national meeting on food safety and sanitation supervision here Monday amid an ongoing campaign on regulating workshops and selling companies in the fields of mining, quartzite processing, gem processing, stone processing, smelting and cement production among others.The campaign, starting in last August, was jointly launched by the State Administration of Work Safety, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and All-China Federation of Labor.Earlier this month, 152 workers at an electrical and lighting company in south China's Guangdong Province were found to have suspected mercury poisoning, showing symptoms such as headaches, hair loss, joint aches and shivers.According to the company, all six production lines of the workshop used liquid mercury, but some workers seldom took the trouble to wear a mask at work.Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong said at the meeting that the ministry is currently working with other departments to set up regular meetings at ministerial level on the prevention and control of occupational diseases.The MOH is also aiming to set up a network against occupational diseases at grassroot level while providing basic job-related health services for migrant workers, said Chen.
