KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It's the happiest a Kansas City widower said he has been in three years."That's when our whole journey started," said Jim Purcell, who lost his 29-year-old wife Christy last year.Christy was diagnosed with brain cancer two months after their son, Jameson, was born.Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City reported earlier in April that Purcell's wedding rings had been stolen."It’s been a brutal journey. Every day was hard. When that ring was stolen, it was just another stab to the heart," said Purcell.Purcell shared the story on social media, explaining it was a devastating loss for him and his son."This was the one legacy item I wanted to pass on to him," said Purcell.Purcell's wallet was also stolen. The thieves used his credit card at the Walmart at 133rd and State Line; its surveillance video captured the alleged thieves’ faces.KCPD shared those images and together enough tips were gathered that detectives found the rings at a jewelry store in Raymore."They were honestly shocked," said Purcell.KCPD property crimes said it’s best to carefully photograph and document your items as extra insurance. Things like that can help them when trying to locate items. "The police never gave up," explained Purcell, who said he was incredibly grateful people stepped forward with information. "A few of them actually put their own personal risk on the line."The group Stolen KC promotes people speaking up about theft daily."We’ve had people identified within five or 10 minutes," explained Todd Howerton, who is on the Facebook group's administration team.Members post photos of missing items with the idea that someone knows something. The group would like to grow to a strength of 200,000. "The massive amount of people can facilitate finding things," said Howerton, who said they can take tips anonymously. That way, the things that are irreplaceable can be found."To have that, it gave me a lot of faith, a lot of hope, and a lot of thankfulness to people in the community who stepped up," said Purcell.Detectives told KSHB they are looking for three suspects in connection with the theft. They are wanted for possession of stolen property, burglary, and fraudulent use of credit. 2236

LA JOLLA -- The iconic Scripps Pier stretches more than 1,000 feet over the ocean at La Jolla Shores. It also serves as a starting point for a new mosaic that maps the wildlife in and around the 1,900-foot deep canyons under the water. Over the last year, four artists have laid down upwards of 500,000 pieces of glass and porcelain. They created a 2,400 square-foot mosaic that shows everything from fish to stingrays to whales."When someone sees something and loves it, they want to know more about it, and they also want to protect it," said Wick Alexander, one of the artists. On Tuesday, the artists held an open house to view the mosaic. It's now tucked away inside a building in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In a few months, crews plan to install it at Kellogg Park at the Shores, a spot a smaller mosaic once occupied. That mosaic, installed in 2008, began crack and was removed. Alexander says the new one will be able to last a lot longer. Renowned oceanographer Walter Munk, one of the project's main backers, said he hopes the mosaic makes a lasting impression. "People who don't dive and who don't really realize can get a chance to see what's going on," he said. Munk and his wife Mary donated more than 0,000 to the project. They hope to raise another 0,000 through the Walter Munk Foundation to pay for the rest of the piece and the installation, which could happen in the next few months. 1431
KOHLER, Wis. – Two major golf tournaments have been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The PGA announced Wednesday that the Ryder Cup has been rescheduled for September 21-26, 2021 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. It was originally scheduled for September 22-27 of this year. The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the U.S., which began in 1927.Likewise, the Presidents Cup, initially slated for September 30-October 3, 2021, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, will now be played September 19-25, 2022.The decision to reschedule the Ryder Cup was based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in conjunction with the state and local health officials.“Unlike other major sporting events that are played in existing stadiums, we had to make a decision now about building facilities to host the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits,” said PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh. “It became clear that as of today, our medical experts and the public authorities in Wisconsin could not give us certainty that conducting an event responsibly with thousands of spectators in September would be possible. Given that uncertainty, we knew rescheduling was the right call. We are grateful to PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan and our partners at the TOUR for their flexibility and generosity in the complex task of shifting the global golf calendar. With the decision to play the Ryder Cup in 2021, all subsequent Ryder Cups after Whistling Straits will also shift to odd years: 2023/Marco Simone Golf and Country Club (Rome, Italy); 2025/Bethpage Black (Farmingdale, New York); 2027/Adare Manor (County Limerick, Ireland); 2029/Hazeltine National Golf Club (Chaska, Minnesota); 2031/Europe (to be determined); 2033/The Olympic Club (San Francisco); 2035/Europe (to be determined); 2037/Congressional Country Club (Bethesda, Maryland).Additionally, as a result of the Presidents Cup date change, the Wells Fargo Championship will be played at its traditional venue at Quail Hollow Club in 2021, at TPC Potomac in 2022 during the Presidents Cup year and will return to Quail Hollow in 2023. Presidents Cup 2022 qualifying will be determined at a later date.Tickets purchased for the 2020 Ryder Cup via rydercup.com will be automatically valid for the corresponding day(s) in 2021. In the coming weeks, the PGA of America will contact those who secured tickets via rydercup.com to facilitate refunds for those unable to attend in 2021.Those who have purchased tickets and hospitality packages on the secondary market must contact that specific site directly. The PGA of America will be unable to process refunds for those purchases. 2727
