SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit.Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. The only confirmation so far is that the two low-income units on the property are leased to San Diegans who qualified. 1947

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local, independently owned grocery stores are keeping an eye on a potential grocery worker strike in Southern California. On Monday, UFCW Local 135 will vote to authorize strikes at Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs. Union representatives say employees have been working without a contract since March. Union president, Todd Walters, says they've met 17 times with the companies asking for better wages, health benefits and pensions. In South Park, the owner of a small grocery store says he hopes the bigger retailers don't enter a strike. David Halabo owns Food Bowl Market with his wife. During the last strike in 2003, Halabo says his business saw an increase in customers for specific items like bread, milk and eggs. Halabo says he's keeping an eye on the negotiations, but says he'll only stock up on extra items if the workers do go on strike. The small business owner says, although is business would benefit, he doesn't want to see a strike happen.Ralphs spokesperson John Votava sent 10News a statement from the company, saying:"We are negotiating in good faith with the union for a fair and balanced contract that is good for our associates, as well as our company. As you know, negotiations are about finding compromise, and this can take time. Throughout the negotiations, it's business as usual in our stores and Ralphs is extremely proud of our associates who remain focused on serving our customers, communities and each other."Vons/Albertson's spokesperson Melissa Hill sent this statement as well, saying:"We are committed to working collaboratively with the unions to ensure that we reach an agreement that is fair to our employees, good for our customers and allows Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions to remain competitive in the Southern California market. We feel the strike authorization vote is premature and will cause our employees and customers undue concern; nevertheless, we will be back at the bargaining table on July 10 and hope to reach an agreement soon."The vote doesn't mean employees will go on strike immediately, but it does give the union the ability to call for one at any time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar broke ground Friday on its first hangar to house the F-35, the most advanced fighter jet in the world.While the plane may be controversial, the hope is to replace aging aircraft. The new project will also include a flightline expansion."We're building new F-35 joint strike fighters and we're going to send them right here to Miramar,” President Trump said in his visit to the base Tuesday.Congressman Scott Peters and other military leaders were in attendance at the groundbreaking, thrilled about finally moving these projects forward."We're really taking care of the nation's defense," said Rep. Peters, representing the 52nd District. "One of the things when I went to the Armed Services Committee was to make sure that this facility was high on the list of priorities," he said. Harper Construction won the bid and will employ about 2000 workers.  The 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s."We need to upgrade the infrastructure, the connections, the systems inside the hangers," said Col. Jason Woodworth, the Commanding Officer at MCAS Miramar.While critics have pointed to design flaws and skyrocketing costs on the new planes, the military says aging aircraft like the F/A-18 hornets are becoming tougher to maintain."Older airplanes are like that telephone on your wall you had when you were a kid with the rotary dial on it," Woodworth said. "[The] cell phone in your pocket, that's the F-35 that does it all.""3rd Marine Aircraft Wing was more excited than anybody here," said Asst. Wing Commander Michael Borgschulte with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.The Marine Corps plans to replace its entire fleet of Harriers, Hornets, and Prowlers with new F-35s."The more flight hours, the more times our pilots can get in the aircraft an actually execute their mission, the more proficient they are," Borgschulte said.The Pentagon admits budget shortfalls have hurt military training, but it stopped short of blaming cutbacks for this week's F/A-18 crash in Florida that killed two navy pilots.The hangar should be done by January 2020, about the same time the F-35s are set to arrive. The pandemic nearly derailed a local museum’s yearly family event.“This year is the 75th year of the creation of the book series, called ‘The Railway series,’ where Thomas was born,” said Katy Titus with the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.The Balboa Park museum hosts a Thomas Day Celebration every year. Thousands of kids, families, and train lovers stop at “Big Station” for the big event. Unfortunately, this year will be different.“Instead of Thomas taking over the physical museum, Thomas is going to take over our web presence,” says Titus.Thomas Takeover Week will run until Sunday. It’s a free virtual event.Visitors can explore the virtual exhibit. There are activities online for kids like arts and crafts. Students can also enjoy storytime, listening to “The Railway Series.”The San Diego Model Railroad Museum had to close its doors twice this year due to the pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mariah Sunshine Coogan's family says she lived up to her middle name. "She would walk into a room, and she would just light it up," her mother, Stacey Coogan, told 10News. The 23-year-old died Monday night when a plane carrying her and six others crashed in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Piper PA24 plane crashed at around 8:45 p.m. local time, shortly after it took off from the Scottsdale Airport.RELATED:  445
