A woman in Illinois is warning others about the dangers of gel manicures claiming that the UV lamps at the nail salon gave her cancer.Karolina Jasko, 20, told WFLD that she was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. Jasko says that her doctor said it was most likely caused by getting her nails done at the nail salon. Specifically, Jasko claims the cancer was caused by the lamp that emits UVA rays to cure gel manicures.According to an unrelated report published by the American Academy?of Dermatology, UV exposure during gel manicures should be a concern for everyone, but especially for people who are highly sensitive to UV light. Chris G. Adigun, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in nail disorders, says that although the UVA rays don’t burn the skin like UVB rays, they do penetrate the skin to damage DNA and collagen, which can lead to premature aging and may increase skin cancer risk. Dr. Adigun says that a common misconception people believe is that LED curing lamps provide a safer option at nail salons, however, those lamps also emit UVA light.“The UV dose that you receive during a gel manicure is brief, but it’s intense,” Dr. Adigun says. “Over time, this intense exposure can add up to cause skin damage.”In order to protect your skin, doctors urge customers that get gel manicures quite frequently to wear YouVeeShield. AGOURA, California — The movie set ranch featured in the HBO television series “Westworld” and almost 500 other productions was destroyed in the Woolsey Fire, Santa Monica Mountains park rangers tweeted Friday. The piece of Hollywood history, known as “Western Town” at Paramount Ranch, was located in Agoura. With its rolling hills and canyons, it was used to create an Old West look for film and television shoots.Paramount Studios bought the 2,700 acre ranch in the golden era of Hollywood. According to the National Park Service, the permanent Western Town was built in the 1950s and posed as Tombstone, Arizona, and Dodge City, Kansas. In addition to “Westworld”, the set also served as the home of “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and episodes of Gunsmoke. See a complete list of productions here. The public was welcome to visit the set’s hiking trails and picnic areas until its destruction.PHOTOS: 3 wildfires rage in California 937

After several weeks of falling case numbers, Johns Hopkins reports that the spread of COVID-19 is again on the rise in the U.S. — and this time, the hot spots are shifting toward the Midwest.Following lockdown measures prompted by the virus' arrival in the U.S. in the spring, the spread of COVID-19 reached all-time highs in the summer months. On July 16, the U.S. recorded more than 77,000 confirmed cases of the virus — the most the country has been recorded in a single day since the pandemic began.According to Johns Hopkins, transmission rates slowed throughout July and August as states like Texas and Arizona re-instituted more stringent lockdown procedures. By mid-September, case rates in the U.S. slowed to about 34,000 a day. However, in the last week or so, Johns Hopkins reports that the case rates have begun to spike again — and that several Midwest states are reporting their highest case rates of the pandemic.Among those states is Wisconsin, which saw new cases jump from about 600 a day to more than 2,600 a day through the month of September. On Sept. 22, Gov. Tony Evers declared a public health emergency following several outbreaks on the state's college campuses.Last week, Evers urged many in the state to continue to wear masks and keep social distance.“There are many across the state who aren’t taking this seriously, who aren’t wearing masks, who aren’t limiting their travel, who are going about their daily lives as if though it is November of 2019,” Evers said.Kentucky is also setting state records for new case rates. According to Scripps station WLEX in Lexington, 6,318 Kentuckians contracted the virus last week — a one-week record. On Monday. Gov. Andy Beshear is expected to step up enforcement in requiring masks and face coverings in public.Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming are among the other Midwest states experiencing their highest new case rates of the pandemic.Currently, the U.S. is experiencing the second-highest amount of daily case increases in the world, trailing behind only India — who has new daily case figures drop from about 90,000 a day to about 60,000 a day in the past few weeks. 2204

Almost two dozen people became trapped when a storm knocked over a large tree onto a detached garage, which collapsed. The victims were attending a child's birthday party, and had gone inside the garage when the storm started, according to Anne Arundel County Fire Department."It literally sounded like a train coming down the tracks and I looked out the front door and I could see a funnel," said neighbor Dawn Redloff.Redloff describes the severe and sudden storm that hit her neighborhood in Pasadena Sunday afternoon, near Baltimore. Winds knocked down trees, power lines and blew out her front door and window. But nothing was as bad as her neighbor's home."It was heartbreaking," said Redloff. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department officials said a large tree fell on a detached garage during a child’s birthday party, injuring 19 and requiring major rescues."The guys were unreal, cutting the building apart, getting people out of there," said Redloff. When crews arrived, they found six people still trapped inside, all were removed within 45 minutes.According to the county, 19 adults and two children were injured and taken to four area hospitals. The ages of the victims range from 2 to 78 years old. 1219
