(KGTV) — A La Mesa home that was being fumigated for termites was burglarized Wednesday evening, according to the family."It's a shame," longtime neighborhood gardener Kit Brett said, lamenting with a neighbor about the burglary so soon after Christmas."It's my biggest fear, I always keep everything locked when I'm in the house," Diane Helmer said. Her son and daughter-in-law live a few houses down from the family who was burglarized.What the criminal didn't realize was there were two signs indicating a home security system, watching their every move. Neighbor Katy Holm told 10News the homeowners' phone alerted them of movement inside the home, around 7:40 p.m. They called police who locked down the neighborhood."My neighbors are very private people to start with, a wonderful family with three children," Holm said.Every neighbor who spoke with 10News was shocked anyone would risk their life to steal."They don't realize your skin's your biggest organ and everything, that, that chemical sucks right into your skin," Brett said."Makes me wonder if it's somebody who has knowledge of how to protect themselves against those sorts of chemicals and maybe they're targeting tented homes, and it's something they should be aware of," Holm said.10News reported on two similar stories in 2018, one in Oceanside and the other in Skyline. (KGTV) - A strip mall that had fallen into disrepair and attracted squatters has been placed into receivership, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.Located on the 7400 Block of Broadway, the property consisted of several buildings that had closed about a year ago after the city busted an illegal marijuana dispensary.But that’s when the real problems began.“Lots of police calls, criminal activities and police responses,” said Richardson Griswold, who was appointed as the receiver by a superior court judge on Friday.It came after the City of Lemon Grove had been granted a judgment against the owners of the property. The judgment required that the owners clean it up and properly secure it, but that was never completed.When the receiver arrived Friday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Department was called in to remove six people who had been living inside. One of them was found hiding in the attic. Four were taken into custody on existing warrants.Inside, Griswold said there was “heaps of trash, clothing, and no plumbing, so there was the smell of human feces and human urine.”He had already hired a crew to start clearing out the buildings and board up the access points. (KGTV) - An innovative young baker from Mount Helix is raising money for Parkinson's disease research in honor of her beloved grandfather, who is battling the disease.As many have done during these unusual times, Zoe Bernard took on a popular pandemic hobby."I learned how to make banana bread," says the 9 year-old.As Zoe perfected the recipe, she felt like something was missing, so she started experimenting with different ingredients, getting more bold as her creations continued to receive rave reviews from friends and neighbors. She took custom orders, adding nuts, candy bar pieces and including a couple of secret ingredients. The warm reception led her to begin selling her creations, but not to pad her own pockets. She and her mother Tina Contogenis discussed what would be most beneficial. Zoe decided to donate her profits to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research.Her "Papa" Joe Contogenis was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. The tough Marine is facing a difficult battle, with a tremor in his arm, and an increasing number of hard days.Zoe and Joe have a special relationship. Joe lives five houses down from Zoe. He describes her as "an incredible young person with the biggest heart."Their neighbors have caught on to Zoe's effort, adding items to sell at a bake sale last Saturday, or overpaying and refusing to take their change.Tina says they've been overwhelmed by the response.
