Thick gray clouds of smoke cover the California sky as massive redwood trees, some of the oldest trees on earth, burn at California’s oldest state park: Big Basin Redwoods State Park.For many people living on California’s Central Coast, these redwoods impact much more than just nearby ecology. They’re a lifeline to the local economy.“That’s crazy because, I mean, it’s our history,” said Pedro Bonilla, owner of El Buen Taco.Bonilla says these trees attract tourists and with Big Basin park closed for at least a year due to fire damage, his taco truck could have to close.“We weren’t prepared mentally or financially prepared for this,” he said.Thousands of acres have burned at Big Basin since fires sparked a few weeks ago, torching everything from the ancient trees to historic structures that were built in the early 1900s.“It’s hard to grasp you know how much damage the fire did to the infrastructure, said Mark McKenna of California State Parks.While McKenna says redwood trees are resilient, their recovery could take years.“The complexity of the rebuilding process, it's daunting when you see the damage that happened up there,” he said.That damage is both extensive and expensive. And though the total cost has not been tallied, people there say you can’t put a price tag on the park.“It’s like losing a loved one,” Bonilla said.While locals can’t replace the history that was lost during these wildfires, they’re still somehow optimistic about the future.“Just when it looked like the darkest time possible for the San Lorenzo Valley, we’re still standing here,” said local radio DJ, Sam Peacock.They're standing tall after flames burned the trees to the ground, because eventually, new life will sprout up even after this disaster.“It just shows that don’t underestimate Mother Nature,” Bonilla said. 1823

There have been 80 confirmed cases of the polio-like illness known as AFM in 25 states this year as of Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.In addition, there are 139 cases under investigation for a total of 219 confirmed and suspected.This is eight more confirmed cases than the agency reported last week and 20 additional patients under investigation.The CDC noted an increase in reports of patients under investigation who began experiencing symptoms in August, September and October. It has not identified the 25 states with confirmed illnesses, nor has it said how many states are reporting cases under investigation.AFM, or acute flaccid myelitis, is a rare illness that affects the nervous system, especially the gray matter in the spinal cord, and can cause muscle weakness and sudden onset of paralysis. There is a lot of concern along the Gulf Coast right now. Two tropical systems are headed for the area at the same time, potentially impacting land on the same day.It's very rare according to the National Weather Service (NWS), something we haven't seen in decades.What's most concerning, is the amount of people in the path of the storms.“The number of people that could be impacted by these two systems is huge, you know, from the northern part of Texas, throughout the entire coast of west side of Florida and the panhandle as well,” said Joel Cline, a meteorologist and NWS Tropical Program Coordinator.Large amounts of rain, storm surge and wind are threatening the Gulf Coast early next week.So, could these systems merge? It's something called the Fujiwhara effect. It's named after a Japanese meteorologist who first described the effect. It's something that happens in the pacific with typhoons.“That’s where two come in close contact and then they move around each other counterclockwise,” said Cline. “That's not going to happen in this one.”There is another potential impact of these systems being close to each other.“So, when you have two of these in one area, then the descending air may get into the other one and help weaken it or make the other one stronger,” said Cline.There's still a lot of time for things to change.
