SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Syrian refugee who took his Uber passenger across the U.S.-Mexico border into Tijuana was detained last week by Customs and Border Protection officers.Hussam Abdul Noor immigrated to San Diego one year ago and was in the process of applying for a green card to stay in the United States, according to his former coworker Wally Ghamraoui.Noor supported his wife and two children by working at a gas station in El Cajon. He had refugee employment authorization document. Two weeks ago, Noor began working as an Uber driver, Uber confirmed. An Uber spokesperson said the passenger must have requested the trip because it is not possible to order a ride across the U.S.-Mexico border through the Uber app.Noor's wife woke up at 3 a.m. and noticed he wasn't home. "He sent her a What'sApp message that don't be afraid, I got held up at the border and I should be back home soon," family friend Nibras Maleh translated.When Noor tried to drive back into the U.S., he was detained at the border by customs officers. "I'm concerned," Ghamraoui said, tearing up, "I hope they don't deport him, he need to fix, to learn something from his mistake."Attorney Lilia Velasquez works in immigration law and said anyone with Noor’s immigration status is not allowed to leave the United States during the legal process. She believes it could take weeks for Noor to return, if the judge allows."You know they're suffering, but we do tell them, 'Why didn't you call the immigration service? Why didn't you make an appointment? Why didn't you call a lawyer?' One minute phone call, if the person would've called me, I would've said, 'It's a no no, do you have a travel document? No? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An apologetic teenage girl explained how she crashed her mother’s car into her neighbor’s garage in Encanto Friday.13-year-old Akasha Alexander had been taught how to start the BMW in the morning to help her mother. On Friday, the car was parked a big too close to the edge of a steep hill.The girl pulled the clutch and the car took off, crashing through the neighbor’s fence, clipping a water line, and ending up in the garage.“I see the fence go down and i'm like, oh no, and then all I see is boom,” said Alexander.Neighbor Melvin Glover’s daughter and grandchildren are visiting him for Easter. They said the impact shook the Glover home and frightened them all.The car was towed from the home.Alexander said she plans to bake Glover a red velvet cake. 784

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Encinitas student beat out thousands of kids across the country to be named a co-champion in a national history trivia contest. He also uses history to teach kids about COVID-19.Quade Kelley, 11, produces different videos imagining what it would be like for historical figures, like Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin, in today’s world. In his videos, the student is telling others “about COVID and what we could do to have the cases go down."In one of his videos, he received the surprise of a lifetime when he found out he was a finalist in the Inaugural “Who Was?” History Bee. Kelley beat out 25,000 kids across the U.S.The student has read nearly 190 books about public and historical figures, over 250 biographies, and spent more than 300 hours studying.“Because of COVID, they canceled New York. It's sort of disappointing, but at least I had an amazing opportunity to be a co-champion," Kelley said.The winners of the contest split ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A security guard at a Clairemont strip mall narrowly avoided a devastating crash Friday.An elderly female driver hit two parked cars, then drove off an elevated parking lot and crashed through a rail. She landed on the street outside the Garfield Shopping Center at 4220 Balboa Avenue and Clairemont Drive.Robert Malone is the security guard for the Goodwill at the mall and was doing rounds of the property.On its way down, the van flew just six feet over Malone’s head.“I look up, I got a van coming at me,” said Malone.The van hit a telephone pole, bringing the pole and the lines down.Malone said up to a dozen men jumped down from the parking lot to pull the driver from the van. The group called 911 and paramedics took the woman to the hospital. No one else was hurt.San Diego Police are investigating the cause of the crash. 869

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A South Bay auto parts store owner is trying to weather the economic storm during the Coronavirus pandemic.Rafael Cotero is the proud owner of two Napa Auto Parts stores, one in Otay Mesa and the other in San Ysidro. Auto parts stores and repair shops are considered essential business during this shut down.Cotero worked his way up to become a small business owner.“I started delivering auto parts out of the Napa in National City. [I was] a driver at 19,” Cotero said.He opened the first store in 2018. Several months ago, he opened the San Ysidro location. He was supposed to have his grand opening celebration on March 21st, but then everything changed as the COVID-19 pandemic started to become a reality in San Diego County. The family made the decision to postpone the celebration—a decision that was made before the official stay at home order was issued.“It was tough because you order in this product in preparation. We were going to do hamburgers, hot dogs, [have a] radio station. And all that just halts. It’s not cheap,” Cotero said.On top of that, they have had to cut hours at the stores to make up for lost income. Cotero estimates business to be down at least 50 percent. “I think a lot of people probably don’t know there are Napa franchises… we’re not some big corporation,” he said. His daughter Bianca has seen her parents struggle over the years, but they never gave up.“I saw them still get stronger in their faith and work harder. A bunch of doors closed, but that didn’t stop them,” Bianca Cotero said. The Cotero family is hoping to keep customers and attract new ones. They’re offering free home delivery if you are near the San Ysidro store, as well as a discount.“I know that we’ll get through this.” Jeanette Cotero said.
