Farmers across the country are hard at work preparing their summer harvest. After a devastating spring, they're seeing the market may be picking back up."We did see kind of a dip in produce buying in that mid-April period, a pretty significant dip in produce buying. But we began to normalize and climb out of that dip as we headed into May," said Ian Lemay, the President of the California Fresh Fruit Association.Lemay said farmers are now cautiously optimistic about the summer harvest, which is full of stone fruits like peaches, nectarines and plums."As long as the consumer has been able to make it into the grocery store, which as shelter in place has been eased, we've seen a bit more of a normalization of purchasing habits," Lemay said.When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, some farmers were forced to throw out their crops or leave them in the fields to rot as supply chains crumbled, and demand quickly shifted. Some farmers can adjust their crops according to demand. Others, like stone fruit growers, have permanent crops like trees and vines that will produce fruit no matter what is happening to the market."We don't have the ability to throttle back or stop the harvest," said Tricia Stever Blattler, the Executive Director of the Tulare County Farm Bureau in California. "A permanent orchard that grows stone fruit like nectarines and peaches, plums or grapes, and certainly we can't tell our dairy cows to stop giving milk."Blattler said packing houses are facing longer production times due to new COVID-19 safety processes, but they're still able to put out plenty of produce. She is concerned, though, that the economic downturn will affect what shoppers buy at the grocery stores."Specialty produce, fresh eating produce will suffer and be less chosen. Less than it would in a good economic cycle," Blatter said. "People are going to buy the canned goods and more affordable choices at the grocery store and maybe skip some of those items that they see to be a little bit pricier like specialty crops."Farmers will also be at the whim of international markets, as many export up to 40% of their produce. The California Fresh Fruit Association is also hopeful that schools will be open in the coming months, as much of their fruit goes into a number of school lunch programs."We're hoping that meaningful plans by different educational institutions can be laid out, and maybe schools are back operating this fall," Lemay said. "We obviously like to get fresh fruit in the hands of children, and if they're not in school, it gets a little bit more difficult."As for what the near future holds for produce farming, many are hopeful that demand will continue. 2686

(KGTV) - The FBI and Escondido Police asked Thursday for the public’s help to find three men suspected of robbing a North County bank.The takeover-style robbery happened just before 10 a.m. on May 23, according to FBI Special Agent Davene Butler.The group backed an SUV against the front doors of the San Diego County Credit Union, 1875 S. Centre City Parkway, and went inside the bank.Investigators said the men were wearing masks and displayed handguns, ordering employees to lie on the ground, the FBI reported. Two of the men pointed their guns at different employees and demanded access to the vault. Federal agents arrested two Mexican nationals and a Cleveland man after more than 140 pounds of methamphetamine was seized in Boston Heights — believed to be the largest seizure of meth in Ohio's history.Tyrone Rogers, 36, of Cleveland, Hector Manuel Ramos-Nevarez, 26, and Gilbert Treviso-Garcia, 24, both of Mexico, have been charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute methamphetamine.Investigators seized 82 pounds of crystal meth and 60 pounds of liquid meth from a warehouse near the in Boston Heights, a city with a population of 1,300, located in suburban Cleveland."It's incredibly dangerous," said U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman. "Narcotics themselves are dangerous, but also keep in mind, those narcotics were there to be processed.Rogers picked up Nevarez and Treviso at La Quinta Inn in Macedonia, Ohio last month, according to authorities.According to the Department of Justice, Rogers drove the two men several times between a house in Aurora and a nearby warehouse.The warehouse where the drugs were seized appeared to be used as a processing facility to produce, package and distribute the drugs, according to the authorities.Investigators listened to several phone conversations about who had "broken into" the location. FALLS CHURCH, Va. – It's the time of year for the great outdoors and the sounds of summer – or rather, a socially-distanced summer.“When we're outdoors or keeping a social distance with kids, they have a little more flexibility,” said Ryan Amato, recreation program supervisor for day camps in Falls Church, Virginia.According to the American Camp Association, about 8,400 overnight camps and 5,600 day camps usually operate across the country. This year, 62% of camps closed, but the ones that didn’t underwent some changes.“We really had to, I don’t want to say dumb down, but really minimize the activity we do and find things we can do while social distancing and still keeping their interest,” Amato said.That meant placing kids in smaller, individual camp groups and trying to keep them outside as much as possible. (KGTV) - California representatives are calling on the government to fund the Storm Damage Reduction Project, hoping to stabilize cliffs along North San Diego County beaches.At Grandview Beach in Encinitas flowers surrounded the beach entrance sign Thursday. Down on the beach caution tape hung around the cliffs, serving as a somber reminder of the three women who died three weeks ago after a bluff collapse.Two days before the tragedy, Representative Mike Levin said he asked for federal funds to stabilize the cliffs from Encinitas to Solana Beach. "It's long past time for the federal government to uphold its responsibility here," he said.He championed the Storm Damage Reduction Project that was approved by Congress in 2016.The project would dredge tons of sand from the ocean and dump it on the beach to protect the cliffs from powerful, eroding waves.Environmentalists are concerned that would destroy tidal ecosystems. A study conducted by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego states invertebrate populations were negatively affected by tons of sand dumped on Imperial Beach.Surfrider Foundation sent 10News this statement:“We understand Solana Beach and Encinitas have been working with the federal government on the San Diego County Shore Protection Project for years and it was approved in 2016 by Congress. Thorough monitoring is going to be of the utmost importance to see how this project impacts coastal ecosystems (including Marine Protected Areas) and impacts to recreation (such as surfing, snorkeling, etc.). Surfrider highly advocates against future seawalls and other coastal armoring.
