SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California State Treasurer John Chiang will visit San Diego Tuesday as part of a five-city tour to announce the launch of CalSavers, the state's new retirement savings program.CalSavers will serve as a state-run retirement plan for private-sector workers at companies with five employees or more. State officials boast that accounts provided by the program are portable and paid for by payroll contributions. Gov. Jerry Brown authorized the program's implementation in 2016 and enrollment will open next July.Program guidelines require qualifying employers to enroll their employees in the program within the next five years, but employees themselves can opt out. State officials estimate CalSavers will help roughly 7.5 million California residents save for retirement."CalSavers' goal is to escape a vicious, societal circle, where each successive generation of Americans is on track to retire poorer than the last," Chiang wrote in a March opinion piece in the Orange County Register. "If we continue this trend by doing nothing, the strain on taxpayer funded health and human services likely would undermine the long-term financial stability of our state."The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association filed suit against the state in May over the program, arguing it violates federal law to establish a state- run retirement savings program. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a 71-year-old man who was killed in a collision at a Rancho Bernardo intersection.John Atcheson of San Diego was turning from Meandro Drive onto Rancho Bernardo Road when an eastbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck crashed into his 2018 Chevrolet Volt shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, according the county Medical Examiner's Office.Medics took Atcheson to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead.The other motorist, a 23-year-old woman, was hospitalized for treatment of broken bones, police said. 590

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Chula Vista officials announced Tuesday that the city will not host its customary events for the Fourth of July this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including its 4thFest and fireworks show.Additionally, the Chula Vista Firefighters Foundation will not be holding its annual pancake breakfast on July 4, and the city will not allow any block parties for the foreseeable future.City offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 and trash pick-up in the city will not be affected by the holiday.The Chula Vista Fire Department reminded residents that private use of fireworks in San Diego County is against the law. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed in a fiery solo vehicle crash off Interstate 5 in the Barrio Logan area, authorities said Monday.The crash was reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday on southbound I- 5 near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Strickland said.Investigators determined a pickup truck hit the center divide, then went down an embankment before ending up on a nearby street and catching fire, Strickland said.The truck's driver was pronounced dead at the scene, but no details about the victim were immediately available.The crash shut down the right two lanes near Cesar Chavez Parkway until about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. 675
