SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A day-long technology fair promises to give senior citizens all the tools they need to stay up-to-date in the digital age.San Diego Oasis will host the tech fair at the Grossmont Center movie theaters on Tuesday, October 15."We're covering all areas of life," says Oasis CEO Simona Valanciute. "We want to show how technology can make it more fun, more safe and more connected."Classes at the fair will cover iPhone basics, podcasting, micro-mobility options, voice-enabled tech, cloud storage, identity theft, cord-cutting and more.Norma Mendenhall has taken a handful of iPhone classes at Oasis already. She says this kind of education is vital for her peers."As a senior, sitting at home, thinking that's not for me, I can't do that, I'm nervous about it, this is the place to take all of that doubt away," says Mendenhall.That advice is the same thing San Diego County officials want to spread. According to the County, there will be 1.2 million people above age 65 by the year 2030. Making sure they all are connected is key to keeping them safe."We've really never seen this kind of demographic shift," says Valanciute. "So, we all need to plan for this."The fair is free to anyone over 50, but San Diego Oasis wants people to register on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old has been arrested after being shot by a store clerk he was trying to rob, San Diego Police say.According to police, Hector Lopez-Gastelum entered the La Michoacana store on the 700 block of Vesta Street around 10:40 a.m. on October 18 demanding cash. Police say Lopez-Gastelum was armed with a handgun.After the clerk handed over the cash, the suspect reportedly demanded that a second register be opened.“While Lopez-Gastelum was still in the store, the clerk shot him twice in the torso with his own handgun, which is legally owned,” police said.The clerk then retrieved Lopez-Gastelum’s handgun and called 911. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Willie O'Ree, who played seven seasons with the original San Diego Gulls after becoming the first African-American man to play in the NHL, will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday in Toronto.O'Ree was elected to the hall in June in the Builder Category, along with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, for his work growing the game.``This honor would not be possible if I had not rejoined the league in 1998,'' O'Ree said.  ``I was given a second wind to give back to the game and I am honored to be recognized.''Bettman said he was ``particularly honored to be part of a class that includes Willie O'Ree.''O'Ree became the NHL's diversity ambassador in 1998. He has built and supported more than 30 nonprofit youth hockey programs throughout North America, giving more than 120,000 boys and girls from disadvantaged and marginalized populations the opportunity to play hockey.Through his actions and his words, O'Ree has created greater opportunity and hope for underrepresented, disadvantaged and marginalized boys and girls. O'Ree played one more game with Boston that season, then returned to Quebec Hockey League's Quebec Aces.O'Ree played 43 games with the Bruins in the 1960-61 season, scoring four goals and having 10 assists in 43 games. O'Ree was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in June 1961, but never played for them.There would not be another black player in the NHL until 1974 when rookie left wing Mike Marson debuted with the expansion Washington Capitals.O'Ree was traded on Nov. 10, 1961 to the Los Angeles Blades of the Western Hockey League, who he played with until they disbanded in 1967 when the NHL expanded to Los Angeles.He joined the WHL's Gulls for the 1967-68 season, their second. He remained with the Gulls for their final seven seasons, scoring a career high-equaling 38 goals in the 1968-69 season.O'Ree returned to professional hockey after a three-season absence in 1978 at the age of 43 with the Pacific Hockey League's San Diego Hawks, scoring 21 goals and assisting on 25 others in 53 games.He played 19 years of professional hockey, despite losing the sight in his right eye as a result of being hit in the eye by a deflected puck while playing junior hockey in 1956.O'Ree kept his vision problem secret, because if it had been known, it would have ended his playing career.Alf Pike, who coached O'Ree with the Blades, figured O'Ree was keeping a vision problem secret and switched him to his right wing, and O'Ree blossomed into a top WHL scorer.Following his playing career, O'Ree was security director at the Coronado Hotel.O'Ree's many honors include the Order of Canada, his native country's highest civilian honor, and the Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A distinctive pair of sneakers helped San Diego Police find a man suspected of threatening a Pacific Beach bar bouncer with a knife Tuesday.The man went to Open Bar on Mission Boulevard near Grand Avenue at 1 p.m. and said he was going to kill the employee, officers said.Police got a detailed description of the man, which included purple Air Jordan Nike shoes.An SDPD lieutenant who responded to the scene spotted the man - and his sneakers - and officers arrested him near Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive.Witnesses identified the suspect at the scene.During the search for the knife-wielding man, police said a drunk bar patron jumped on top of a patrol car and stomped on its roof. The man was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism for substantial damage to the SDPD vehicle. 820

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Monday a million gift from the John and Mary Tu Foundation, designated to help increase the number of people tested for COVID-19, as well as develop new ways to track and treat the virus.The award supports the clinical research activities of UCSD translational research virologist Dr. Davey Smith, who is "advancing new diagnostics, therapies and ways to monitor the spread of the virus," according to a university statement."What we are trying to do is save lives," John Tu said of the gift to create the John and Mary Tu Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund. "It's very simple: with this research, Dr. Smith is working on behalf of everybody, to save us, to save the world."At the onset of the pandemic, Smith and his team began to investigate methods that would increase the efficiency of testing as well as understand the disease process -- how the virus mutates and spreads within a population. Through sequencing the virus, he is able to track the disease as it spreads into vulnerable populations, which informs the best means for contact tracing.Smith is also leading clinical trials to test new drugs for treatment of COVID-19 for those who have moderately severe cases."At this critical time during the COVID-19 pandemic, the generosity of the John and Mary Tu Foundation has an immediate positive impact on our efforts," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. "Their support allows experts like Davey Smith to quickly mobilize to mitigate the spread of the virus and develop treatments for those affected."Smith said the gift was important, as he and his team had limited resources, which would have frozen their progress."The foundation saw that time was of the essence in this pandemic and that science was going to get us out of it," he said.
