It will perhaps be the biggest story in December as well as the upcoming months. When will vaccine distribution be available to you or your family? Recent news from Pfizer and Moderna is making vaccine distribution a reality in the near future. So what should you know? KEY FDA MEETINGS The first key date is December 10. That is when the FDA will hold a hearing on Pfizer's vaccine. Moderna's vaccine will get a hearing on December 17. The hearings are being conducted by the “Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee,” and they could give approval within 72 hours of the first hearing taking place. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER FDA APPROVAL After FDA gives the go ahead, the CDC will finalize who should get it first. The good news is that the CDC have already released who they think should be first in line. Earlier this week, an advisory committee to the CDC recommended health care workers and those in nursing homes receive access almost immediately. Ultimately though, governors will serve as "air traffic controllers" directing which specific facility has access to the first doses of vaccines. If the current timeline holds, those orders could start going out on December 11 or December 12. AVERAGE AMERICANS TIMELINE AND POTENTIAL ISSUES If you are not deemed a high priority, it will still likely be months before you are able to get a vaccine. Some analysis point to Februrary, but other analysis point to April or May. Some potential issues for distribution include the temperature the vaccines must be stored at. The Moderna vaccine can stay in traditional refrigerators at around 40 degrees or so but Pfizer's must be stored at -94 degrees, which may be trickier to transport in more rural parts of the country. Another big question mark is will Americans actually want to be the first to take the vaccine? "All the science in the world isn’t going to matter if you can’t people to be immunized against COVID," Dr. John Brownstein of Boston Children's Hospital said. Former Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are said to be committed to receiving the vaccine live on television in order to inspire confidence. 2166

In cities across America, volunteers stand armed and ready to fight a different kind of virus infecting the planet."Everything's changed right now. Everything is to-go, so it's turned into a disposable society again," said Miah Earn.Earn lives in Hillcrest, an urban neighborhood in San Diego, California. She's out on the streets cleaning up liter, protecting the city she's called home for over 30 years."It's a mess out here. It really is," said Earn. "I'm seeing masks and gloves everywhere. I don't understand why people can't hit the garbage with them."Ian Monahan is with I Love a Clean San Diego and says they've seen more trash in general during the pandemic. "Increased packaging, whether it's to-go containers, whether it's PPE, whether it's shipping products. Unfortunately, it's ending up on the streets, and we've got to protect it, so it doesn't get into the ocean or waterways at the end of the day," said Monahan. During a global clean-up event this month, Monahan says for the first time they'll be tracking the amount of PPE collected. "It's actually a whole new anomaly in our clean-ups. We really didn't see them before. And mostly it's the disposable masks, which people think are paper, they're actually plastic," said Monahan. Eventually, they will break down into microscopic pieces that will outlive us hundreds of years, and they can threaten wildlife and food supplies.Around the world, it's estimated nearly 200 billion disposable face coverings and gloves are being used each month because of the pandemic. The environmental conservation organization OceansAsia is documenting this new pandemic of pollution, capturing video of disposable face masks washing up on one of Hong Kong's most remote islands."Once you see this, you can't really unsee it," said Mitch Silverstein, chapter manager for Surfrider Foundation San Diego County. The nonprofit is piloting a program to make clean-ups more convenient, loaning the tools to businesses for the public to borrow. Volunteers have the option to fill out a data sheet with what they collected, which now includes PPE. Data collected around the world could help inform policy for products doing the most damage."Use reusable items, a reusable mask, reusable gloves when you're cleaning up," said Monahan. They say it will take a global shift in thinking to heal mother earth from what some call this human-made sickness. 2402

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis lawyer is accused of flashing a bus carrying a girls' basketball team on two separate occasions while driving. Norwell High School girls’ basketball coach Eric Thornton said he was driving the girls to a tournament in June when a man pulled up beside their bus on I-70 near the airport and exposed himself. “He knew it was a school bus,” said Thornton. “(He) knew it was high school aged females on the bus.”The man, who police have identified as Raymond Fairchild, then exited the highway before the team could get the license plate on his Honda CRV. “The girls were horrified and just very disturbed,” said Thornton. In an attempt to identify the alleged flasher, Thornton posted a photo taken moments before the incident on social media. That post made its way to Union City where a second girls’ basketball team reported a similar incident last February – from what appeared to be the same man. “Once we found out that he’d done it before it was obvious this was a pattern,” said Thornton. It didn’t take long before someone on Facebook recognized that man as Fairchild and contacted investigators. The 71-year-old is listed as having a law office in downtown Indianapolis. “He should never be allowed to practice law again in my opinion,” said Thornton. “He should be put away for a time.”Fairchild now faces six counts of public nudity and indecency charges. His first court appearance is set for October 26. “It’s a crime against innocent, na?ve girls who just saw abnormal behavior and had no idea what would happen next,” said Thornton. “He needs to be severely punished for his behavior.”  1669

Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of death of 26 teenage girls whose bodies were recovered in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday. The girls, aged 14-18, are believed to have been migrants from Niger and Nigeria who had embarked on the treacherous route to Europe from Libya over the weekend.Lorena Ciccotti, Salerno's head of police, told CNN that autopsies would be carried out on Tuesday and that coroners would be investigating whether the girls had been tortured or sexually abused.Their bodies were found close to a flimsy rubber dinghy that had all but sunk when rescuers arrived, Ciccotti said. Aid workers had described a grim scene: survivors hanging onto the remains of the vessel as the girls' bodies floated nearby.Their rescue was one of four separate rescue operations carried out in the Mediterranean over the weekend. In total, 400 people were brought aboard the Spanish vessel Cantabria before disembarking at the Italian port town of Salerno.Among them were 90 women and 52 minors, including a week-old-baby, authorities said.Libya is a well-known jumping-off point for migrants seeking refuge on European shores. Many from sub-Saharan Africa, are fleeing war and persecution; others from impoverished nations in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia have made the treacherous journey in search of better economic opportunities. The North African country is a hotbed for human traffickers, whose network of smuggling operations have gone widely unchecked due to Libya's lack of effective central governance. On Monday, Italian police arrested two men, an Egyptian and a Libyan accused with human smuggling. The men are not believed to be connected to the boat that was transporting the teenage girls.Since the start of this year, 2,839 migrants have died on the central Mediterranean route, according to the International Organization for Migration. 150,982 migrants have reached European shores, of which around 74% are Italian arrivals. In August, Italy deployed two military ships to Libya, offering training to the Libyan Tripoli Coast Guard following an agreement signed between the Italian Interior Minister, the Tripoli government and various mayors of Libyan villages to fight human trafficking. 2260
