BALDWIN PARK, Calif. - Arson officials in Los Angeles are investigating after someone set an official ballot drop box on fire Sunday night in Baldwin Park.The Baldwin Park Police Department said on Facebook that they and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a ballot box on fire outside the Baldwin Park Library just before 8:30 p.m.According to police, ballots recovered from the box were turned over to the Los Angeles County Registrar's Office. 470

As more businesses open up, along with schools and colleges, there are still some hurdles many people need to get over when it comes to fears associated with COVID-19.Fox 17 spoke with Psychologist Dr. Lyndsay Volpe-Bertram from Spectrum Health about these fears."I don't think six or seven months ago any of us thought we'd be still in this current state," Dr. Volpe-Bertram explained, adding that the differences in the way people are handling the precautions is adding another layer of stress. "I think that range of reaction and behavior is also contributing to our overall stress because everybody is kind of taking a different approach to it."To address a balance, Dr. Volpe-Bertram recommends what's called "Ongoing Calculated Risk Assessment", similar to what many call risk vs. reward."We are looking at it as, 'Is this worth it to me?' Is what I'm going to get as a benefit back from having this experience or putting myself out there in some way, is that worth the possible exposure?", asked Dr. Volpe-Bertram.Essentially she recommends we be efficient and choosy in everything we do, even in socializing or explaining."Rather than saying, 'We have to say yes to everything'. Help us identify what are the most important events for us to be attending? Who are the most important people that we want to spend our time with?"Dr. Volpe-Bertram reminds, as the weather turns and flu season fast approaches, not to stress about it, but instead prepare for more mental well-being."It's important for us to start thinking about what our coping strategies are going to be in the Winter and how are we going to keep ourselves busy. Because we don't want people to stay holed-up in their houses, fearful of going out to places. As we're all focused on the current rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, a technology known as thin-film freezing is getting a lot of attention. It's groundbreaking and could change the way we administer drugs or use medicine in general.You've probably heard about the need to keep the COVID-19 vaccine cold. It has to be so cold, in fact, that the shipment and transport are challenging. Well, what if that vaccine could be turned into powder?“What we’ve most recently been working on is the elimination of cold chain by storing as a powder, a dry powder where the drug is much more stable than if it was stored as a liquid or as a frozen liquid,” said co-inventor Dr. Robert Williams.Williams said it would eliminate the need for extreme cold storage and transport. The technology isn't new. He got a research grant and came up with it about 15 years ago.Williams, who is also a pharmacy professor at the University of Texas in Austin, said they were working on the technology and its multiple uses when the pandemic hit. And all of a sudden, they got a lot of attention.“We have published over 70 papers on the technology and using it for different products- it’s quite a mature process," Williams said. "We developed it because with other vaccines, the majority of the vaccine cost is in wastage because of this cold chain issue, so we published several key papers where we showed our thin-film freezing technology would protect vaccines - and you wouldn’t need cold chain storage.”Glenn Mattes, President, and CEO of TFF Pharmaceuticals added that the powders can be converted to topical preparations and they are currently working with the US Army to take some of the preparations and would then administer them directly through the eye.TFF is launching thin-film freezing into development through the FDA process. “I use the term ubiquitous because it is and disruptive because it is,” Mattes said. He added that they've explored their technology in the cannabinoid realm. But, as for the COVID vaccine, they're aiming for a second-generation usage.“To truly eradicate the pandemic, you have to have a global response," Mattes said. "The companies we’ve been speaking to certainly recognize the broad utilization of the technology but the application to the developing world, rural area, remote areas, where you can take a powder and inhale it or take the powder and reconstitute it has tremendous potential."Experts say it is only just the beginning as they launch their technology into a new world. 2511

As vaccinations get underway in the United Kingdom, United States and other rich countries who could afford to pre-purchase doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, researchers warn that about a quarter of the world’s population will be unable to be vaccinated until 2022.There are 13 vaccine manufacturers working on coronavirus vaccines, and they are capable of producing around 6 billion courses of vaccine by the end of 2021.“Just over half (51%) of these doses will go to high income countries, which represent 14% of the world’s population,” researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health wrote in their report, published in the British Medical Journal."Of the 13 manufacturers, only six have sold to low and middle-income countries,” they noted.At the time of the report, the U.S. had reserved 800 million doses of the vaccine. Japan and Australia, which account for fewer than 1% of the world’s COVID-19 cases, have reserved and potential options to get 1 billion doses.“Even if all 13 of these vaccine manufacturers were to succeed in reaching their maximum production capacity, at least a fifth of the world’s population would not have access to vaccines until 2022,” researchers noted.Covax, a global effort organized by the World Health Organization, had made initial purchases of 300 million vaccine doses. Covax is working to create equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments and vaccines for all countries. President Donald Trump’s administration said they would not participate in the effort."This study provides an overview of how high-income countries have secured future supplies of COVID-19 vaccines, but that access for the rest of the world is uncertain," the researchers concluded. "Governments and manufacturers might provide much-needed assurances for the equitable allocation of COVID-19 vaccines through greater transparency and accountability over these arrangements." 1921

AURORA, Colo. — Amid renewed calls for justice, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced Wednesday that he is looking into what his office can do to respond to the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died following an interaction with Aurora police last August.“I am hearing from many Coloradans who have expressed concerns with the investigation of Elijah McClain’s death. As a result, I have instructed my legal council [sic] to examine what the state can do and we are assessing next steps,” Polis said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.Over the past couple of weeks, interest in the case has grown both locally and nationally. People from Colorado State Rep. Leslie Herod to U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Ellen Degeneres and Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, have made calls for justice in the case and a renewed investigation into what happened that night and if officers should face punishment. A release from the city said that the committee will bring the proposal forward to the full council at the July 6 meeting."We need to bring closure to this tragic incident by making sure every aspect of it is thoroughly investigated," Coffman said in a statement."Trust is already eroded—delaying action will only cause further strain in our community," said Allison Hiltz, the chair of the Public Safety, Court, and Civil Service Policy Committee.The independent investigation has been fraught with controversy since many council members felt the original outside probe, led by a Connecticut-based attorney with ties to law enforcement, was not independent enough. That contract was terminated June 10 and Mayor Mike Coffman said in a tweet that “another individual will be selected by the Mayor and the City Council.”Calls for an independent and external review in McClain’s August 2019 death have been ongoing since it happened, and the officers involved in his death did not face criminal charges and were found not to have violated department policies. The city has since changed department policies directly in the wake of McClain's death after calls for further investigation.McClain suffered a heart attack on the way to a hospital after the Aug. 24 incident, which happened in the 1900 block of Billings Street. Officers had responded to a call about a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. When they arrived, they contacted McClain, who they claimed resisted when the officers tried to detain him, police said.A struggle ensued, and a responding officer requested that a paramedic give McClain a dose of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state," officials said.But in the department's review of the incident earlier this year, the board found that the officers "had a lawful reason to contact Mr. McClain."The board also found that the force applied by officers — which included a carotid control hold — during the incident was "within policy and consistent with training."The carotid hold has since been banned by the department.The Adams County Coroner conducted the autopsy on McClain and ruled that the manner of his death was "undetermined," saying it could not determine whether his death was an accident, due to natural causes or a homicide.District Attorney Dave Young said Wednesday his office received more than 1,700 voicemails on Tuesday alone about the McClain case.He says he has to make a decision based on evidence and that a jury would find compelling beyond a reasonable doubt.“Understand that my role is limited to determine whether or not a criminal violation occurred. I am not indicating that the actions of the police department were appropriate. That's the role of the Aurora Police Department,” Young said.KMGH confirmed Wednesday the officers involved are all still currently employed by the Aurora Police Department.Young says the attacks have gotten personal and are overwhelming his office from doing their job of serving victims of crime.He encourages those sending emails to read his decision.
