SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Signs posted at the Cowles Mountain trailhead warned San Diego hikers to leave their dogs at home during hot weather. While only three miles long, the trail in Mission Trails Regional Park is steep and often rocky, with no shade. During the cooler months, the trail is popular for dog owners. County experts say dogs with short snouts, like bulldogs, pugs, and Boston terriers, can have difficulty catching their breath in hot weather. The high heat also puts stress on puppies, older dogs, and overweight pets. Match the trail with his endurance in mind.Take more water than you think you’ll need and a water bowl.Take plenty of breaks, preferably in the shade.Check your dog’s paws regularly to make sure they’re not getting burned.Watch for signs of dehydration or heatstroke. They can include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness or bright red gums, refusal to walk further, collapse, shaking, shock and seizures. If your dog suffers any of these symptoms, stop, preferably in the shade, and offer water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting this fall, the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine is offering the first-ever certificate program specializing in medical marijuana.The three-semester class promises to teach health care professionals the basics of medical cannabis, so they can begin to use it in their practice."We thought it was important for health care professionals to have objective information about medical marijuana," says school President Jack Miller.Miller says part of the program's purpose is to help dispel some of the myths surrounding medical marijuana."There's a lot of misinformation," Miller says. "If CBD worked for everything that people said it worked for, we wouldn't need another medicine. It seems like the claims are that it will help everything. But really a lot more research needs to be done."Across town, that research is happening. UC San Diego's Center for Medical Cannabis Research has been studying the benefits of the drug since 2000."It's clear from our research and other people's work that there are some medicinal properties to compounds within marijuana," says CMCR Director Dr. Igor Grant.But, Grant cautions that it still may be too soon to have a degree program focused on medical marijuana."There are some things we know, but a lot of things we don't," he says. With more Indian reservations than any other county in the United States, San Diego powwows help keep those traditions alive."We all try to come together and share the culture, do the best we can to teach our children. I was born and raised on the reservation, but my kids were not, so it's hard to instill the same teachings that I was brought up with," said Emerald Arnold, born and raised on the Navajo reservation.Children and adults dressed in colorful regalia for the powwow, which was held Saturday at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center in Old Town. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several recent storms to hit the San Diego County region could spell disaster for erosion prone areas of the coast and inland valleys.Rainfall running over coastal bluffs with a history of erosion could increase the likelihood of future erosions along our shores. Adam Young, a scientist with Scripps Institution of Oceanography San Diego, says an active season already could led to more crumbling of local cliff sides following heavy showers."Pretty much whenever you have a new rainfall event, you'll pretty much see a new landslide ... The more rain we get, the more landslides," Young says. As waves erode the bottom of cliffs, rainfall running over the top can create more stress and instability, Young added."As long as waves are hitting the cliff, they're going to keep falling down," Young said. "At the beach, waves and rain work together to speed up the process."This month, Scripps researchers were surveying a Del Mar cliffside when a 55-foot-wide slab crumbled before their eyes — and on video."it's almost certain that landslide was caused by that rainfall," Young said refering to recent rains. "The state we're in now is because we had a bunch of rain. Rainfall slowly moves through rocks, increasing the weight of the cliff and sapping its strength — until gravity takes over."That water is very slowly flowing through there," Abbott said of San Diego's coastal bluffs. "After the rain stops, several weeks later we'll be back to before the rain started. We're definitely not over."That's not to say inland bluffs aren't at risk. Think about a regular old book. If you took a paper book and dumped it in water, it would swell," Abbot said.
