SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Southwestern College President and Superintendent Kindred Murillo will retire at the end of this academic year after serving 24 years in the California Community College System, the college confirmed Wednesday.Beginning as an adjunct faculty member at Desert Community College District, Murillo has served in various roles. She spent 11 years as a chief business official and served her last nine years in the system as a college president, first at Lake Tahoe Community College District, and then at Southwestern College for more than four years."It is the commitment faculty, classified professionals and administrators have had to the success and achievement of our students that has made my career so rewarding," Murillo said. "Southwestern College has been the most remarkable community college I have had the privilege of serving during my entire academic career. We have worked together to establish a path of transformation for our students and our community."Murillo guided the college's accreditation status from warning to reaffirmation within her first year. According to a college statement, she also tackled a backlog of personnel investigations and complaints, increasing accountability at the district.Early in her tenure, she formed an Advisory Task Force on Inclusion & Race Relations that was intended to acknowledge a history of racism and inequity by design and to "develop transformative interventions designed to strengthen, enhance and support culture change," a college document said.Governing Board President Nora Vargas credits Murillo's commitment for positioning Southwestern College as a model of equity in the California Community College System."Murillo's transformative changes would have taken any other leader a decade to accomplish," Vargas said. "The work she has done will continue to benefit our students and our community for years to come. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and elements of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group deployed from San Diego Monday in support of global maritime security operations, Navy officials announced.Prior to departing, the strike group completed a composite training unit exercise called COMPTUEX, which is designed to fully integrate units of a carrier strike group while testing its ability as a whole to carry out sustained combat operations from the sea.Ships, squadrons and staffs have been tested across every core warfare area within their mission sets through a variety of simulated and live events, including air warfare, strait transits, and responses to surface and subsurface contacts and electronic attacks, according to U.S. Third Fleet public affairs."The carrier strike group team is trained and ready," said Rear Adm. Jim Kirk, commander of the strike group. "The men and women of Carrier Strike Group 11 have demonstrated exceptional tactical and technical expertise, teamwork and toughness. We are honored to answer the call and operate forward."In addition to conducting maritime security operations whenever and wherever called upon, strike-group units will participate in cooperative engagements, multilateral exercises and unit-level training designed to improve capability and capacity among Navy units and partner nations in the regions they may operate in.All personnel assigned to the group completed a minimum 14-day quarantine ashore and were tested for COVID-19 prior to getting underway with their respective units. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego lifeguards reported that although about 155,000 beachgoers hit San Diego beaches Saturday and Sunday, the number of rescues and medical assists made by lifeguards was not excessive going into the third day of the Labor Day weekend.``On Saturday there were about 120,000 people on the beaches, and on Sunday there were about 135,000 people,'' said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum. ``We did about 2,000 preventative acts each day.'' Lerum said the number of rescues made both days was relatively light.`We made 15 rescues on Saturday, and 42 rescues on Sunday, mostly because the ocean has been pretty calm,'' he said. `We had more medical aids, 40 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday. We're going to probably have more than that for Labor Day, but the final figures are not yet in.''`The bulk of what we've been doing on the beaches has been taking care of sick and injured people,'' said Lerum. ''We also had a flurry of kayak rescues, About five kayaks tipped over into the ocean. We rescued those kayaks. Everybody is fine.''There was lots of boating activity over the holiday weekend.Lerum said a person fell from either Ocean Beach Pier or the seawall there about 5:30 p.m. on Labor Day. The extent of the injuries was not immediately known.``We had a ton of boating incidents on Mission Bay,'' said Lerum.``That's a big part of what we do. It was a spectacular Labor Day weekend. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped slightly to 3.2 percent in November, with nonfarm industries adding nearly 10,000 jobs, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday. The November unemployment rate is down from a revised 3.3 percent in October and even further below the 3.5 percent rate in November 2017. Total nonfarm employment increased by 9,800 jobs from October to November while total farm employment lost 300 jobs. Nonfarm employment now totals 1,503,800 in San Diego County and farm jobs total 8,500. The trade, transportation and utilities industry added 5,900 jobs month-over-month, the most of any industry in the county. Government was the county's only other industry to add more than 800 jobs, increasing by 2,900. According to EDD data, 1,300 of the government jobs added were in the state and local education sub-industries. The leisure and hospitality industry continued to lose jobs as 2018 recedes further away from the summer months. The industry lost the most jobs of any in the county from October to November at 1,300. Year-over-year data showed an employment increase of 26,400, all nonfarm jobs, from November 2017 to November 2018. A majority of those gains, 16,500 jobs, came in the professional and business services industry. Year-over-year farm employment stayed steady at 8,500 jobs. California's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped from 4.1 percent in October to 3.9 percent in November, according to the EDD. That rate is also below the state's unemployment rate in November 2017, 4.2 percent. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Temperatures will soar into the triple digits in parts of the San Diego area Friday at the outset of an extreme late-summer heat wave expected to roast the region through the Labor Day weekend.The predicted hot spell and accompanying low humidity and gusty winds out of the east prompted the National Weather Service to issue a "red flag" wildfire warning for the local inland valleys and mountains, effective from 10 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday. The alert signifies a likelihood of critical combustion hazards that can lead to "extreme fire behavior."Air moisture levels will drop to the 15-20% range on Saturday and Sunday with poor overnight recovery, according to meteorologists.
