An effort by Microsoft and Linkedin to get people back to work has now reached more than 10 million job seekers in 231 countries and territories. Their goal? To give free digital skills to 25 million people.Representatives from Microsoft and Linkedin admit it was, and still is, an ambitious initiative to reach that many people and to target the digital space and help get people the skills they need to work in our new and changed world.“It has really been a challenging time for so many people and there are things people can do to upscale we all really need to learn new skills everyday” says Naria Santa Lucia, general manager of digital inclusion at Microsoft Philanthropies.Part of her job is to help people get a job. She says the program has reached people all over the world, and all over the nation.“We’ve seen a great uptick from states like California, Texas, NY, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, Washington DC- but every single state has had a learner,” Santa Lucia said.Santa Lucia highlights people who quit their job hoping for more opportunity, right before the shutdown. The learning path on LinkedIn offers interview help, critical skills, and collaboration tools.Santa Lucia recalled someone who left their job before the pandemic who was able to find work.“He decided it was time to try something new,” Santa Lucia said. “He came upon the content and was able to supplement the technical background with the customer service skills to enhance his resume and become more attractive to employers and has landed a temporary position and is really looking forward to parlaying that into full time employment after the role concludes."Guy Berger is the principal economist at LinkedIn.“I’m pretty optimistic we’ll find our way out of this pandemic and even if we don’t, we’ll find ways of working around it more and more jobs will be online friendly or social distancing friendly,” Berger said.Berger and his team just finished the workforce report for October. They tracked labor trends, who's been hired, where people are working, and where they're moving, Berger said.“These reports in the late spring were pretty glum, hiring in the United States was down something like 40% compared to where it was a year ago. That’s huge,” Berger said. “We’ve never seen that big of a drop in our data in the last few years. But the good news: if you look at these reports… they’re improved we’re in a much better place.”The report shows that places like Austin, Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina, are gaining the most people. While the restaurant industry and travel and tourism are still down, there's been growth in areas like wellness and fitness.Santa Lucia says, the initiative identified the top 10 in demand jobs, like software development, sales representative, customer service specialist and project management.“Life gets in the way,” Santa Lucia said. “All of us, we’re trying to juggle helping our kids running schools in the other room, we’re thinking about other struggles and worried about the pandemic and exposures in the health arena as well. One of the great things is you can start it and put it down as you need to which is what I had to do as life got a little busy and you can go back to it as well”She says another popular course is on diversity inclusion."There’s also really thinking about race equity, how can we reach individuals who are Black and African American, and, in this moment, provide the opportunity for them to become reskilled and upskilled as well" says Santa Lucia, who also recommends making a plan for yourself, keeping record, taking advantage of conferences which are now virtual and often free.Once you get your completion certificate, it's one more thing you can add to your profile to help you stand out amongst the crowds who are looking for work. 3812

An employee at an Arizona pizza restaurant may lose his eye after being attacked by a woman with a stiletto. Scottsdale Police report that on Fbe. 19 they were called to Gus' Pizza.Witnesses reportedly told police that 32-year-old Kris May Loring fell out of her chair and onto the floor. She left the restaurant thinking other customers were laughing at her. Police say a few minutes later her boyfriend entered the business, yelled at the customers and allegedly threw pizza at them. While Aaron Walter, a security guard for Gus' Pizza Lounge, attempted to detain the man, police say Loring, "took off her stilettos and charged at the victim." She delivered, "deliberate and violent blows towards the victim's head." “I was kind of holding the back of her boyfriend’s neck, just kind of holding him down while he’s blowing off some steam, and next thing you know, I was hit in the eye,” said Walter. Police say one of the stilettos struck Walter in the eye causing a severe laceration. Walter was hospitalized for several days, and his vision has returned since the attack. “I'm glad it was a stiletto.. I'm glad it wasn’t a knife or a gun,” said Walter. Upon her arrest, Loring allegedly threatened to "bite the nose off the arresting officer." She is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault.Despite what happened, Walter says he holds no ill will towards Loring.“I want her to have a wonderful life, I want her kids to prosper, I want her husband to prosper, and I want everyone to just live."  1579

As hospitals are becoming overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients, North Dakota is permitting coronavirus-positive health care workers to continue assisting patients. The guidance stipulates that the health care workers must remain asymptomatic and take enhanced precautions in order to stay on the job. This comes as travel nurses are stretched thin as dozens of states are reporting record hospitalizations.Given the situation in North Dakota and elsewhere, it is possible more states will have to follow suit and continue using infected staff members in order to provide care. The CDC has spelled out guidance in these situations. The CDC says hospitals must exhaust a number of other guidelines, including adding travel nurses, postponing elective medical procedures, and postpone elective time off, before going into a crisis staffing situation.“If shortages continue despite other mitigation strategies, consider implementing criteria to allow HCP (health care personnel) with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 who are well enough and willing to work but have not met all Return to Work Criteria to work,” the CDC’s guidance states. “If HCP are allowed to work before meeting all criteria, they should be restricted from contact with severely immunocompromised patients (e.g., transplant, hematology-oncology) and facilities should consider prioritizing their duties in the following order:1. If not already done, allow HCP with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 to perform job duties where they do not interact with others (e.g., patients or other HCP), such as in telemedicine services.2. Allow HCP with confirmed COVID-19 to provide direct care only for patients with confirmed COVID-19, preferably in a cohort setting.3. Allow HCP with confirmed COVID-19 to provide direct care for patients with suspected COVID-19.4. As a last resort, allow HCP with confirmed COVID-19 to provide direct care for patients without suspected or confirmed COVID-19.”North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum spelled out the challenges facing his state.“Our hospitals are under enormous pressure now,” Burgum said. “We can see the future two, three weeks out, and we know that we have severe constraints.”Despite Burgum’s warning, his state is among the ones not to issue an order requiring masks in public places. In update CDC guidance, the agency says that masks can reduce the viral load for the wearer, in addition to prevent the spread of the virus.Steven Weiser, MD, president of Altru Health System in Grand Forks, North Dakota,, wrote in an op-ed about the toll the virus is having on workers. "Your neighbors in healthcare are pleading with you – they are tired, they are covering shifts for their colleagues who cannot work, they are working in new areas and rallying together to ensure that our promise of providing care to our community is upheld," Weiser wrote. "I ask you, on behalf of our team of healthcare workers, to please take the recommendations... very seriously. This is about protecting our at-risk community members and friends. We need your partnership to stop the spread, now. Doing so will save lives." 3105
