Hank Azaria says his "eyes have been opened" and he's willing to "step aside" from playing his controversial "Simpsons" character.The actor appeared on Tuesday's episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and talked about the fallout surrounding the character he voices, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.Comedian Hari Kondabolu's documentary "The Problem with Apu" debuted last November and looked at the character as a negative, stereotypical representation of South Asians.Nahasapeemapetilon, a Indian-American character with a thick accent, operates the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in the fictional town of Springfield. The show recently aired a response to complaints about him.Writers had the character of Lisa Simpson respond to a question from her mother Marge by saying, "Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?" before Lisa glanced at a framed photograph of Apu on her nightstand, which was inscribed with the message "Don't have a cow."The scene generated further complaints from viewers.Azaria voices multiple characters on the show, including Moe Szyslak and Chief Wiggum. He told Colbert he just wanted to be funny."The idea that anybody, young or old, past or present was bullied or teased based on the character of Apu, it just really makes me sad," Azaria said. "It was certainly not my intention. I wanted to spread laughter and joy with this character and the idea that it's brought pain and suffering in any way, that it was used to marginalize people, it's upsetting."The actor told Colbert he had nothing to do with the show's response, given that Apu doesn't speak during the episode. Azaria said he did not agree with the show's response to the controversy.Azaria said he's given a great deal of thought to how to proceed and believes "the most important thing is to listen to South Asian people, Indian people in this country when they talk about what they feel and how they think about this character."He also called for more inclusion in "The Simpson's" writing room -- even if that means he no longer voices Apu."I really want to see Indian, South Asian writer, writers in the room, not in a token way but genuinely informing whatever new direction this character may take, including how it is voiced or not voiced," Azaria said. "I'm perfectly willing and happy to step aside or help transition it into something new. 'Horse Museum' is the latest book by Dr. Seuss, launched Tuesday at UC San Diego's Geisel Library. The library sold copies of the book at a launch party in the Seuss room Tuesday. The book is about art, and helps kids of all sizes learn about art and museums. Lynda Claassen, the Director of Special Collections and Archives for the Geisel Library says the book is a treasure, found in a box by Audrey Geisel, Theodor's widow, in 2013. It was not a full book she discovered, merely a manuscript with storyboard pages. Using that manuscript, illustrator Andrew Joyner finished Seuss' work. Inside the book, there is horse artwork from greats like Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollack, as well as cameo appearances by familiar characters like the Cat in the Hat. And Claassen promises it won't be the last: "there is more to come. There is always more." Theodor Geisel died in 1991, and there have been other posthumous works published, including 2015's 'What Pet Should I Get?'His wife Audrey died in December 2018. GREELEY, Colorado – Weld County’s top prosecutors and Frederick police held a news conference Monday afternoon to brief the media on more details of the Chris Watts case after he was sentenced earlier in the day to several life terms in prison without the possibility of parole in the deaths of his pregnant wife and young daughters.Flanked by fellow prosecutors, Frederick Police Department representatives and the county coroner, 19th Judicial District Attorney Michael Rourke started the news conference by thanking the law enforcement agencies involved in the case as well as the family of Shanann Watts for “serving justice” in her name and those of her two daughters and unborn child.Much of what Rourke and his deputy district attorney, Steve Wrenn, discussed at the news conference centered on new details that had not been released about the case, the autopsy reports for the three which were released after the news conference, and what will happen next for Chris Watts as he makes his way to prison for the rest of his life.Rourke said that he doesn’t believe Watts will ever truthfully answer as to why he killed his family though his parents pleaded with him during sentencing Monday to come clean and atone in the future.He said that Watts’ attorneys approached prosecutors first about the plea deal and that he did not accept until after speaking with Shanann’s family, the Rzuceks, in North Carolina beforehand. The Rzuceks addressed Watts and the case in court Monday.“That was a conversation I was only going to have with them face to face,” Rourke said.He reiterated that he and the family had talked about the state of the death penalty in Colorado and its future. GUATAY (CNS) - The spread of a five-acre brush fire, sparked by a car crash, was stopped Sunday, Cal Fire said. The small fire, caused by a traffic collision on Highway 79, began at 11 a.m. near the Green Valley Campground in eastern San Diego County near Descanso, Traffic was closed in both directions of Highway 79. The California Highway Patrol escorted traffic through the area. At 12:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews would remain on the scene into late afternoon to mop up and contain the fire. HONOLULU (AP) — Intense turbulence struck an Air Canada flight to Australia on Thursday and sent unbuckled passengers flying into the ceiling, forcing the plane to land in Hawaii.The flight from Vancouver to Sydney encountered "un-forecasted and sudden turbulence," about two hours past Hawaii when the plane diverted to Honolulu, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in a statement."The plane just dropped," passenger Stephanie Beam told The Associated Press. "When we hit turbulence, I woke up and looked over to make sure my kids were buckled. The next thing I knew there's just literally bodies on the ceiling of the plane."A woman behind her hit the ceiling so hard that she broke the casing of an oxygen mask, said Beam, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.Of the 37 passengers and flight crew members injured, nine had serious injuries, emergency responders said.
