A bill that will give many Americans a ,200 check in the upcoming days finally got the green light from the US Senate late Wednesday after days of wrangling between the two parties. All 96 senators present voted in favor of the legislation, marking a coveted moment of bipartisanship in Washington. "We were inspired by what was going on around the country," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. "This is a proud moment for the United States Senate and the country."While both parties generally agreed that a one-time check should be sent to a majority of Americans, details on just how many Americans should receive a check, on how much unemployment insurance should be awarded and who would oversee stimulus for businesses were up for debate. The two sides came to an understanding late Tuesday, but some Senate members opposed some of the unemployment provisions. Now the bill goes to the House, which has been holding pro forma sessions amid the spread of coronavirus. The question is whether any members of the House will force a full vote, which could cause the bill to be delayed for several more days as House members would need to return to Washington. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will sign the bill into law as soon as Congress sends it to him. The urgently needed bipartisan legislation is the largest economic rescue measure in the country’s history. The last stimulus bill like this was passed during the 2008 financial crisis and amounted to 0 billion.Under the COVID-19 measure, American adults making less than ,000 a year would receive ,200 checks as well as 0 per child to help fill in the gaps for those without a steady income during the crisis. The bill would also create a 7 billion loan program for small businesses. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said small business owners could receive interest free loans. The legislation would also establish a 0 billion lending fund for industries, cities and states. A Treasury Department special inspector general would be appointed to scrutinize the lending decisions and detect any abusive or fraudulent behavior.Schumer said an additional 0 billion will be injected into the American healthcare systems to provide desperately needed medical supplies, like ventilators, respirators, personal protective equipment and beds. About 0 billion will be sent to state and local governments, who are in the front lines of the pandemic. 2465

A group of 50 attorneys general from 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico unveiled a major antitrust investigation of Google Monday, sharply escalating the regulatory scrutiny facing the tech giant. The probe will focus on whether Google has harmed competition and consumers, looking at least initially into the company's conduct in its search, advertising and other businesses, though it may expand from there.Speaking to reporters in front of the US Supreme Court Monday, a group of 13 attorneys general struck a bipartisan tone. Karl Racine, attorney general of the District of Columbia, said it was an "unusual setting" for a group that typically disagrees on issues ranging from gun control to reproductive rights."But we are acting as one today," he said.Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said the investigation will begin by looking at Google's advertising and search dominance but hinted that the scope of the probe could widen significantly."The facts will lead where the facts will lead," he said.To kick off the probe, the states on Monday sent Google a compulsory request for information known as a civil investigative demand (CID). Officials declined to say what was contained in the request, but South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg told CNN Business the document is dozens of pages long with many questions. The attorneys general of California and Alabama are the only two from all 50 states not yet participating.Asked why California has not joined the states pursuing the investigation, a spokesperson for California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said the state is committed to fighting anti-competitive behavior."But to protect the integrity of our work, we can't comment — to confirm or deny any pending or potential investigation," the spokesperson said.A spokesperson for the Alabama attorney general didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The investigation significantly raises the risks of regulation for Google, which so far has faced antitrust scrutiny from federal lawmakers and the Justice Department. On Friday, Google disclosed in an investor filing that it had received a CID from DOJ.The multi-state probe is the second such look into Big Tech to be announced within a week; on Friday, eight states and the District of Columbia said they have begun an antitrust investigation into Facebook. 2370

A Chicago house party devolved into chaos when a dispute led to the shootings of 13 people -- possibly at random, police said. The 13 victims range from 16 to about 48 years old, said Fred Waller, chief of the Chicago Police Bureau of Patrol.Four of the victims -- including the 16-year-old -- are hospitalized in critical condition. The other victims are in stable condition, Waller said. The melee broke out around 12:35 a.m. Sunday in the 5700 block of South May Street."This incident stemmed from a dispute within that party," Waller said. "This party was given in the memory of a subject that was slain in April. We're still developing details as far as that goes."Police said shots were fired in three different locations."Shots were fired within the residence, which caused everyone to start to leave," Waller said.As partygoers fled the home, police believe one of them opened fire outside, police said."Then a vehicle was driving down the street. One of the people also who left the residence fired upon this vehicle," Waller said. "So we had three different scenes, all within a close proximity."Waller said 1128

A farmer in New Zealand packed up his semi-automatic firearm Monday and surrendered it to police. The weight of the terror attacks on two mosques in New Zealand and the thought of what could happen if the gun fell into the wrong hands made John Hart voluntarily turn in his firearm, he said."I had had that gun since it was made. I was glad it had never harmed a person," Hart, 46, told CNN. "Now I can know that it never harmed a person, so I have some reassurance in that."Friday's attacks killed 50 people in the nation which has had relatively few 563
