CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- The desalination plant in Carlsbad is celebrating the production of 40-billion gallons of water since it opened three years ago. That's enough water to fill the Empire State Building 145 times. Or a billion bath tubs. The "watermark" being celebrated Thursday with a gathering of officials, including former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall and Poseidon CEO Carlos Riva. All sharing a toast with a glass of fresh water produced by the plant. Water so clean once it passes through the reverse osmosis system, say plant officials, they have to add mineral back into it. "The water molecule makes it through," says Poseidon Community Outreach Director Jessica Jones. "But the salt molecule -or any other impurities, viruses or bacteria- are too large. And so, they're rejected." 10News asked Jones about environmental impacts over these past three years - such as the salt concentrations in local ocean waters from discharge from the plant. 10News asked Jones about environmental impacts over these past three years - such as the salt concentrations in local ocean waters from discharge from the plant. She said Poseidon does test for such changes but has found no measurable impacts on local salt levels or the environment. She says that is due to the way the plant dilutes and disperses its discharge water. Poseidon now has another plant up for approval in Huntington Beach which could begin construction as soon as next year. The plant produces 50-million gallons of fresh water a day. With twice as much extra salty water discharge as a result. 1601

Bulked-up, mutant “mighty mice” held onto their muscle during a monthlong stay at the International Space Station, returning to Earth with ripped bodybuilder physiques, scientists reported Monday. The findings hold promise for preventing muscle and bone loss in astronauts on prolonged space trips like Mars missions, as well as people on Earth who are confined to bed or need wheelchairs.A research team led by Dr. Se-Jin Lee of the Jackson Laboratory in Connecticut sent 40 young female black mice to the space station in December, launching aboard a SpaceX rocket. In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Lee said the 24 regular untreated mice lost considerable muscle and bone mass in weightlessness as expected — up to 18%.But the eight genetically engineered “mighty mice” launched with double the muscle maintained their bulk. Their muscles appeared to be comparable to similar “mighty mice” that stayed behind at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. In addition, eight normal mice that received “mighty mouse” treatment in space returned to Earth with dramatically bigger muscles. The treatment involves blocking a pair of proteins that typically limit muscle mass.A SpaceX capsule brought all 40 mice back in good condition, parachuting into the Pacific off the California coast in January. Some of the ordinary mice were injected with the “mighty mice” drug after returning and quickly built up more muscle than their untreated companions, Lee said. The scientists completed the experiment just as the coronavirus was hitting the U.S.“The only silver lining of COVID is that we had time to write it up very intensively” and submit the results for publication, said Dr. Emily Germain-Lee of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Lee’s wife who also took part in the study. Both are affiliated with the University of Connecticut. While encouraged by their findings, the couple said much more work needs to be done before testing the drug on people to build up muscle and bone, without serious side effects.“We’re years away. But that’s how everything is when you go from mouse to human studies,” Germain-Lee said.Lee said the experiment pointed out other molecules and signaling pathways worth investigating — “an embarrassment of riches ... so many things we’d like to pursue.” His next step: possibly sending more “mighty mice” to the space station for an even longer stay.Three NASA astronauts looked after the space mice, performing body scans and injections: Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, who performed the first all-female spacewalk last fall, and Andrew Morgan. They are listed as co-authors.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. Celebrating the newest Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees will look a different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers announced they will replace the annual live ceremony with an exclusive special honoring this year’s inductees. The program will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max on November 7, replacing the 35th annual live ceremony originally scheduled for May 2 of this year.“To protect the health and safety of our Inductees, their families, crews, and our attendees, we’ve made the decision that the scheduled live event is not possible,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in a statement. “Together with HBO and executive producer Joel Gallen, we will still create an exciting program honoring our 2020 inductees, by telling the stories of their incredible contributions to music and impact on a generation of artists that followed them.”The 2020 Inductee class includes Depeche Mode, The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G., T-Rex, and Ahmet Ertegun Award honorees Jon Landau and Irving Azoff.Visitors can now visit the Rock Hall.
