(KGTV) - A major turning point for the town of Oceanside was the creation of Camp Pendleton."It was just a village, Oceanside was just a village and all of a sudden you have all these workers coming into Oceanside for a place to sleep, a place to eat," said Faye Jonason, History and Museum Director at Camp Pendleton since 1996.According to the Oceanside Historical Society, the town's population more than doubled in five years. Restaurants, schools, and hotels were bursting at the seams. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor spurred the U.S. Navy to purchase the 132,000 acres of Rancho Santa Margarita y las Flores Mexican land grant. The base was only supposed to be temporary, but the process of turning the quiet Rancho into the world's largest Marine Corps Base had begun. "I think they found it was such good training area, they weren't about to let go," said Jonason. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside has unveiled its latest effort to achieve their zero waste goals set back in 2011.Green Oceanside Kitchen is a state-of-the-art food recovery and preservation facility dedicated to eliminating waste and feeding the community."We need to do better, we need to feed our community and educate our community," said Colleen Foster, the City's Environmental Officer. The City teamed up with O'Side Kitchen Collaborative for the new project. They'll collect unwanted food from farmers, backyards, and food businesses, turning the goods into something delicious. "I could've done anything, but for me, making an impact in my community as well as it tasting good is the best!" said Vallie Gilley, Executive Director of O' side Kitchen Collaborative. The facility includes a 1,700 square foot commercial kitchen and a 500 square foot fridge that can hold about a semi-truck load of food. There's also an interactive demonstration kitchen for culinary arts training and education. Foster says more than 40 percent of what is grown and produced in the U.S. is wasted. With the new green facility, planners hope to save 20 percent of what would've gone to waste."That's thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of food," said Foster. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A 7-year-old was found dead inside an Oceanside home Wednesday morning, leading to the arrest of her father, police say. According to Oceanside Police, the suspect's mother was called to the home on the 3500 block of Las Vegas Drive around 11 a.m. to pick up the suspect’s two children. When the woman went inside to pick up the children, she noticed blood on her son, Pedro Araujo, 27, police say. After leaving the home with one of the children, a 6-year-old girl, police say the woman called 911. Police arrived and, after searching through the home, found the body of the 7-year-old girl. Araujo was arrested and taken into custody, police say. "I'm shocked," said neighbor Tina Torres of the crime scene in her neighborhood. "When I left the house this morning, everything was calm.""It's very sad," Torres added. 853

One inmate was shot and at least five others were injured during a riot at Tehachapi Prison on Sunday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed.According to CDCR, six inmates were hurt during a riot that broke out at the facility Sunday afternoon at about 1:33 p.m. Five were injured during the riot itself and another was shot by an officer "in the buttocks area," CDCR said.The inmate who was shot was transported with non-life threatening injuries. The condition of the other five injured inmates is unclear at this time. No guards or staff were hurt.CDCR says three shots were fired during the incident. It's unknown how the riot started, and a portion of the prison was on lockdown as the investigation is ongoing. 796

OMAHA, Nebraska — Omaha resident and Sutton native Elliott Bottorf got a surprise while on a Saturday morning drive in North Central Nebraska. Bottorf and his wife passed a longhorn steer riding in the passenger's side of a sedan on Highway 20 near O'Neill.  A cattle guard replaced the passenger's door and part of the roof was taken off the vehicle for the steer's head to stick out.As of Wednesday, the video, which he posted to Facebook on March 17, had been viewed more than 3.8 million times and shared more than 80,000 times.Some have commented wondering if the steer was real or fake."At first, I wasn't sure if it was alive or not but after reviewing the video you could clearly see that it had some snot coming out of its nose," Bottorf explained. "You could see its eyes blinking."The driver and the steer were on their way to O'Neill to be in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. 922
