SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights was sidelined because of the pandemic this year, organizers brought the event's annual joy online.Organizers released a video compilation of the parade from years past for what would have been the parade's 49th annual event."We are saddened that we cannot gather this year to celebrate the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, but we can see the magnificently decorated boats from previous years in our recap video that is shared online," said parade Chairman Larry Bauman.The Bay Parade of Lights routinely brings more than 100,000 visitors to the waterfront, as 80 decorated boats glide through the bay on two weekends."Let us all do what we can to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and stay safe so that we can come back next year and celebrate the 2021 holiday season and enjoy the Parade of Lights on the bayfront," said Bauman.You can see the parade's look back: 927

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Twin brothers were arrested in Mexico this week and turned over to U.S. border authorities in connection with a 2013 murder in East San Diego.Anibal and Edward Avila, both 27, were arrested on Friday and charged with the murder of Rafal Robles, 34, five years ago, according to San Diego Police.Police say Robles and another man were found suffering from gunshot wounds in an alley near the 4000 block of 39th Street in the Cooridor neighborhood just before 3 p.m. on April 11, 2013. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital, where Robles died shortly after arriving.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodDetectives identified the Avila brothers as the suspects behind the fatal shooting, though they remained at large and were believed to have fled to Mexico.Police did not offer a motive for the shooting.The twins are due in court Nov. 6. 882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Tuesday identified the two men shot and killed near Mountain View Park Sunday.Police say 33-year-old Tony Jackson and 37-year-old Robert Brown were shot near South 40th Street and Ocean View Boulevard. Both men were taken to the hospital where they later died.According to police, the victims were standing near the Mountain View Community Center when they were shot around 1:20 p.m. Sunday.RELATED: Two dead after Mountain View shooting  The suspect was described only as a black man wearing dark clothing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday, San Diegans who live in their cars rallied in Ocean Beach to press the city to allow living in vehicles, as residents in various neighborhoods pressure the city to ban the policy once again.Earlier this year, San Diego City Council members repealed its vehicle habitation ordinance after a federal judge found it unconstitutional which halted all enforcement.Then in March, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced an effort to bring a ban back. The ordinance would prohibit residents from sleeping in their cars from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. within 500 feet of a school or house.Residents say reversing the ban leads to broken glass, bottles of urine, drug paraphanelia, and excrement on sidewalks in some areas. But supporters of the policy said Wednesday they don't park in front of homes or litter along roads.The city says they’ve received hundreds and hundreds of complaints about what people living in cars have done to their neighborhoods. Currently the city is expanding a safe parking program that would allow people to park overnight at monitored sites. 1085

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - You probably don't know Encinitas resident Carol Areas, but you may have seen her words of encouragement scattered thorough San Diego. Ten years ago, she and her son began writing positive messages on rocks and leaving them around the city. Now they receive messages of people making their own rocks around the world.When Areas learned her son had Asperger's, she was compelled to start a new project, the Love it Forward List. "I felt the need to connect with people, to receive love, to know people are caring," said Areas. Whenever she hears someone is going through a hard time, she rally's volunteers to send them some love. "Five years now writing snail mails! I love that!" said Areas.So when she learned about 5-year-old Noah Avery and his 7-year-old sister Kalea, she called on her army of comfort warriors. "The moment I heard about this story, I thought we had to do a campaign for them," said Areas.In June of 2018, Kalea was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor. "Thirteen days after we were told our daughter had a brain tumor, we were told our son Noah had a brain tumor," recalls their mother, Nohea Avery. There are only a handful of cases known of siblings being diagnosed with this cancer, doctors say. And Nohea says her doctors don't know any cases of siblings being diagnosed at the same time. "To have two, you kind of just, you go into survival mode. I always tell people well, we don't have a choice. You wake up every day, and you show up for them every day, and you kind of just, one foot in front of another," said Nohea. This summer, both kids were in remission, but then doctors found a small tumor in Noah's brain. They're traveling to Rady Children's Hospital each week from Los Angeles for proton radiation. But Nohea says throughout every challenge, complete strangers like Areas have shown up along the way.
