SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ridesharing company, Lyft, is donating hundreds of thousands of dollars in ride credits to immigration groups throughout the country, including one in San Diego County. The company made the donation announcement on Monday, donating 0,000, calling the campaign "America is an Idea, Not a Geography." The Minority Humanitarian Foundation in Spring Valley received roughly ,000 in ride credits. The foundation's founder, Mark Lane, says the company's donation is a game changer for his organization. Lane explains that the money previously spent on rides can now go towards other things like food, clothing and other supplies. 10News spoke to multiple Lyft drivers in San Diego who said they wouldn't mind providing rides to migrants, as long as their pay didn't change. A few Lyft users told 10News they don't agree with Lyft's donation but said they would still continue to use the service.During the month of July, Lyft is also matching donations to RAICES up to ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This November will see two meteor showers and a lunar eclipse grace the skies.The Northern Taurid meteor shower will skirt across our atmosphere on Nov. 11-12, according to EarthSky. The event is also expected to produce about five meteors per hour, but the shower is famous for its slow-moving and bright meteors.The next week, the Leonid meteor shower will peak on Nov. 16-17. That shower is expected to produce 15 to 20 meteors per hour. NASA says the Leonid shower happens every November and features some of the fastest moving meteors out there, traveling at about 44 miles per second.Stargazers are encouraged to get the best viewing of the meteor shower by finding an area away from lights and laying flat, with feet facing east, to take in as much sky as possible, according to NASA. The best viewing time will be around midnight and last until dawn.Then to cap off the month, on Nov. 30, a penumbral lunar eclipse will visible throughout North America. The moon will appear slightly darker because the sun, Earth, and moon are imperfectly aligned. The Earth will block some of the sun's light from directly hitting the moon, covering all or part of the moon with the outer part of its shadow.A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are imperfectly aligned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the Sally Ride Forever stamp to America’s first woman in space.The first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony will take place Wednesday at the University of California San Diego, where Dr. Sally Ride taught.After the ceremony, Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego will honor her with a 6:30 p.m. panel discussion on women in leadership.Ride dazzled the nation as a trailblazing astronaut, brilliant scientist, and dedicated educator.Her journey to space began in 1977 while she was finishing her Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University. She saw an article in the student newspaper saying NASA was seeking astronaut candidates, and for the first time, women were allowed to apply.Five years later, Ride became the first American woman to reach space when she launched in the Challenger for a six-day expedition.She was 32 at the time, making her the youngest American to go to space.After retiring from NASA in 1989, she took a job as a physics professor at UC San Diego and became the director of the university’s California Space Institute.Ride used her experiences in space to explain difficult physics concepts to her students.In 2001, she co-founded Sally Ride Science, a company dedicated to fostering interest in STEM fields among children, especially girls.Ride was honored for her contributions to science and space exploration with the NASA Space Flight Medal and the NCAA's Theodore Roosevelt Award. Experts and policy makers from both sides of the border shared their thoughts on what the new presidency will mean to the future of the relationship between the United States and Mexico."So much of what happens in Mexico doesn't stay in Mexico and so much of what happens in the United States happens along the U.S-Mexico border," said USD Professor David Shirk, who helped organize Thursday's forum.Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will become the first person to lead Mexico from the political left in several decades after a landslide victory in July elections. He ran on a platform of populist reforms."He's traditionally been a strong supporter of the rights of migrants and respecting their human rights and caring for them," said Tony Wayne, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 2011-2015 and attended Thursday's event. He's currently a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Institute."They're going to have to try to pick things up as quickly as they can. Nobody wants a repeat of the kind of incident that you had a few days ago at the border," Wayne said, referring to the clashes between Central American migrants and Border Patrol agents near the San Ysidro border crossing Sunday.Wayne and Shirk share some optimism that Mexico's new administration will be able to find common ground with President Trump, despite their differences on policy. Wayne points out that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be traveling to Mexico the day after Lopez Obrador's inauguration.
