SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Kensington sake bar and restaurant is getting creative to survive the latest COVID-19 shutdown orders.Like for so many businesses, the pandemic has been served up economic pain at Tanuki Sake Bar, where revenues have been cut in half.The most recent COVID-19 shutdown orders were a gut punch for Kai Ishii’s father, who opened the restaurant more than two years ago."Definitely disappointment on his part, and worry for his employees and the business," said Ishii.With the restaurant being takeout only, Ishii's family can only afford hours for one of their four servers."The biggest thing is the uncertainty of what’s next," said Ishii.What Ishii did do next is inspired partly from fast food."Definitely got some inspiration from In-N-Out, when they ask you, 'Do you want to eat in the car or take it home?"" said Ishii.But he knows the concept of in-car dining would only go so far."We wanted to give them something to occupy their attention," said Ishii.So Ishii bought an 18-foot-tall movie screen and a projector, and set them up in their modest parking lot — just 6 spaces. Last weekend, the sake bar started offering a pop-up Japanese movies and anime to go with dinner."We found a way to put audio in the car, so it's a lot more immersive," said Ishii.Each car can use wireless speakers for sound. The dinner for two and movie costs .Their first screening Saturday was sold out, and so is another screening later this week. Ishii is hoping to show two or three films a week, and its not just about the extra revenue."We have a lot of wonderful loyal customers, and we’re hoping the big screen will add to that ... create foot traffic, create buzz with the cars driving by and bring more attention for the restaurant and takeout orders ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego financial expert in San Diego has a message for women looking for success: a man is not a financial plan.Most women would rather talk with the grandmothers about their love lives than talk about financial planning, according to an investment survey done by Oppenheimer Funds.CPA Ginita Wall has a clear message.“Every marriage ends in either divorce or widowhood and 70 percent of the time it’s the woman who’s left alone,” said Wall. “Then thinking that magically, someday, I’ll start saving for retirement, someday I’ll be able to buy a house; living in the someday and not really planning for it today.”Wall moved her CPA practice to San Diego 31 years ago. She realized there was a need.“Women were out in the marketplace, but they weren't managing the money, and sadly, often nobody was.”Wall and financial planner Candace Bahr launched the Women’s Institute for Financial Education (WIFE), a nonprofit to give women the tools to start making a difference.“We didn't have anything to sell anybody. Our whole goal was and continues to be ‘our goal is education,’” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr established Second Saturday, a monthly workshop to teach women what they need to know during divorce. Each session brings in an attorney for matters of the court. Wall gives financial advice, a counselor helps with family issues, and a mediator can settle the differences. The experts volunteer their time.“It’s a decision for many people that may be the largest financial decision of their life, and if you're going through it uninformed or too emotional, it's going to be difficult to make the right choices.”Wall says love and money go together, but so do arguments.“if you loved me more, you wouldn't be spending this money, spending more on me, or you would understand how I feel.” Wall advises couples to talk about what’s important to them, make goals, create a concrete plan and monitor it.“So we want women to be partners in a relationship, not dependents,” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr’s money message has gone national. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hillcrest man is still recovering in the hospital after he says he was attacked, leaving him with a head injury and partial paralysis.Ricky Jackle says he was walking with a friend on Robinson Avenue in Hillcrest October 14.“I was out with a friend of mine. Had a few drinks at The Rail.” According to Jackle, that’s when the assault took place.“Last thing I remember, there was a confrontation between the person I was with and somebody else. I tried to get in the middle of it to stop in. I was pushed on my chest, went backwards and hit my head on the curb. Apparently that’s when I bled out. I heard voices, by friend’s voice behind me,” said Jackle.Jackle says after the incident, his friend fled the scene.In tears, Jackle describes how the assault has changed his life. “I can’t work, I can’t do the things I used to do. I’m scared.”“I don’t think anyone should be attacked or a victim like I was, I don’t think it’s right.”While under observation at the hospital, Jackle began to feel numbness in his hands and arms which resulted in loss of movement in his hands, arms and legs, according to a GoFundMe post.“The injury caused swelling which compressed his spinal cord resulting in loss of movment [sic] and some paralysis,” according to the post.Jackle’s cousin, Derrick Roach spoke about the friend who left Jackle following the attack. “He said the reason I left Ricky is with all the blood I thought he was dead. Why would you leave someone in that condition?”Friends and family members are still searching for the suspect in the alleged attack. The incident left Jackle with 0,000 in medical bills. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego family is hoping to make their way home from Mexico on Thursday after having to ride out Hurricane Delta at the hotel where they were staying. Victor Lopez is a local restaurant owner of El Pollo Grill. Lopez's family traveled to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico last week. As Hurricane Delta was approaching, they booked a flight to leave the region, but their flight was canceled as they were heading to the airport. As the hurricane was approaching, the family was moved to a hotel ballroom where they spent the night as the hurricane passed. Lopez says there were no windows in the ballroom so they could only hear the heavy rain and strong winds. Lopez admits that the ballroom was crowded and there was some concern of COVID-19, but he said the hotel staff was disinfecting constantly and everyone was wearing masks. The hurricane did little damage to the resort in Playa Del Carmen, but just 45 minutes away in Cancun's hotel zone, debris and palm fronds were scattered all over the streets. Lopez and his family are hoping to return to San Diego on Thursday afternoon. Hurricane Delta is expected to make landfall in Louisiana on Friday afternoon. 1188
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report from the California Association of Realtors shows how much San Diegans need to make to buy a home. According to the report, you'll need to make well over 0,000 to qualify for a home loan. 6,270 to be exact. And that's the minimum qualification. The report also places the median home price in San Diego County at 0,000, ,000 above a report from April which indicated San Diego homes had a median price of 0,000. In the state of California, the median home price is more than 8,000, meaning that, on average, you'll need to make 1,500 statewide to pay for a home. What does the housing market look like in the rest of the U.S.? According to data from the association, the median home price in the rest of the country is a modest 5,500. You'd have to make ,820 to qualify for a loan of that size. So why is the California housing market so expensive? There are a lot of reasons, but in a report from the Sacramento Bee, Brian Uhler of the non-partisan California Legislative Analyst's Office gives one reason.
