PALM HARBOR, Fla. — A rare two-headed southern black racer snake was recently found at a home in Palm Harbor.Kay Rogers said her cat brought the snake into the home through the doggy door. The cat placed the snake on the carpet."She brings us presents all the time. This day, my daughter sent me a message. 'Mom, she brought in a snake, and it has two heads,'" Rogers saif. "I think this tops it, but she's an adventurous cat for sure."Rogers said her 13-year-old daughter, Avery, placed the snake in a plastic container. She said her daughter and her son like learning about reptiles."We went and got like a habitat setup for it. I was talking to a couple different reptile specialists and they were kind of helping me through what to do with him like getting him a heating pad and trying to feed him," Rogers said.The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shared the story on Facebook. FWC said the phenomenon, bicephaly, is uncommon, but happens during embryo development when two monozygotic twins failed to separate, leaving the heads conjoined onto a single body.FWC says that both heads' tongue flicks and react to movement, but not always in the same way. Two-headed snakes are unlikely to survive in the wild, as the two brains make different decisions that inhibit the ability to feed or escape from predators."Because of the two head thing, he's very uncoordinated and couldn't get to the food very well. It was like one head would see the food and try to go for it, the other would be going the other way and pulling him back," Rogers said.The snake is currently being cared for and monitored by FWC staff."He was really an easy pet," Rogers said. I really just wanted to kind of see him thrive and have people that would take care of him and give him the best chance. I know, well my daughter's research shows they don't live well in the wild at all. Perry Hopsin was just 22 years old when he got into a car accident that would eventually end his life."My brother, he has been to multiple healthcare facilities, fighting for his life for 10 months," said Parris Hopsin.Last month, Perry died and just as his family was starting to cope with the fact that they would never see him again, the same car he was killed in, popped up in front of Perry High School in Stark County, Ohio.The family says it was there to promote their prom promise campaign-which tries to deter teens from drinking and driving."Our family was under the impression that the car was still being held as evidence in this ongoing investigation," said Parris.The only problem is the Hopsins family never consented to it and their loved one was not drinking and driving."It was definitely not the way Perry would want to be represented and/or our family would want him to be represented and remembered," she said.The school has now removed the car and it's back in the towing company's lot."I really appreciate that they would remove it," said Parris. PARK COUNTY, Colo. — A Discovery Channel reality show about gold mining is dividing the small Colorado mountain town that provided its setting — even as the show plans to move on. The show “Gold Rush” turned a small old mine in Fairplay into a much bigger operation. Fairplay is located about 85 miles southwest of Denver. Producers of “Gold Rush” said they will not return to Park County, but the residents say they are still feeling the impacts and worrying about future expansion."It's hard to describe what a four-foot boulder sounds like getting dropped into metal," said Jamie Morrow, whose home is about a quarter of a mile away from the mining operation. Morrow and her family purchased their property before the reality show began — when the mining in town was minor and mostly unobtrusive.  "It was quiet. It didn't make a lot of noise and was a small two or three man operation," Krissy Barrett, who also lives in the county, said. Some citizens in Fairplay have filed lawsuits seeking to reverse rezoning approved by county leaders that converted residential land into mining areas. Even though “Gold Rush” is moving on, residents are still fighting in court. They say large mining equipment remains in the area.Some residents say they’re worried the mining operation will continue to grow.  "Me and a bunch of other of our folks said we can't allow this because if they can rezone that parcel from residential to mining, they can do any parcel. They could rezone next door to us, next door to anybody," Barrett said. Leaders of the small town have embraced the national attention the reality show brings. "We've had a huge uptick in visitors coming to the visitors center. A lot of them are expressing their desire to go out and see the show, the mining," Fairplay town mayor Frank Just said. Some residents said the show’s presence in town was positive. Keith Wortman said he made extra money renting a home to the crew. A server in a local restaurant said the location got more business when production was happening. "Pretty exciting to have a big show come to town," bartender Melissa Mcaninch said. But opponents argued the town’s mountain beauty is also a big draw, and that beauty could be impacted if mining continues to expand. "The population that comes up here to look at the beauty, to enjoy the beauty, is way bigger. We believe the overall economic impact from our maintaining our aesthetics here is way bigger than a small TV show and way longer lasting. You know gold mining is a boom and bust," Barrett said. The town’s mayor said mining has been around in Fairplay since 1856 and it’s here to stay. “I'm sure a negative effect on some of the folks that were the closest to the mine, but all in all, those folks [the miners] have a right to do what they've done," Just said.  2958

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Pittsburgh announced on Sunday that they'd issued a shelter-in-place order for students on its Pittsburgh campus due to a spike in positive COVID-19 cases on campus.The order, which was initially scheduled for Thursday, was moved up and went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday."This action is being taken to respond to a significant increase in positive cases among students over the weekend," university officials said in a statement.
