SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Any other year, Sonia Highbaugh and her family would be spending Christmas gathered at her sister’s house, but in true 2020 fashion, things look a little different this holiday.“I was sad this year not being able to spend the holidays with my extended family and everyone, but we make those hard decisions for the betterment of everybody,” said Highbaugh. “We actually stayed home, it’s just my immediate family, my boyfriend, and our two boys. We made videos of them opening their gifts so we can share with family so we can feel like we were together.”Highbaugh works for the Chicano Federation and says through training with the San Diego Latino Health Coalition; she received pointers on how she should be spending the holiday this year.“With the pandemic, we wanted to be safe. I’m also expecting, so it’s very important for me to stay safe,” she said.Registered Nurse Francisco Garcia can relate.“It’s just us three,” said Garcia.While breaking traditions can be challenging, Garcia, his wife, and daughter also decided to spend Christmas at home together.“Being a Latino, my family chooses to get together every year for Christmas and have food and presents. Just having everyone together is what we take pride in, and so it’s very different that we’re not around each other this year,” he said.Working as a registered nurse, Garcia knows all too well the potential consequences of large gatherings during the pandemic, especially after the surge in COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving celebrations.“Seeing an influx of patients and the number of patients we’re seeing with COVID as the year went on was a big challenge,” he said.Health officials across the nation, including here in San Diego County, have urged people to stay home, avoid traveling and large gatherings, despite that some continue to ignore the guidance.According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 846,520 people in the United States were screened at TSA checkpoints on Christmas Eve alone, and millions more were screened since last Friday.Still, many families are playing safe and having a great time doing so.“It has been fantastic; I think the biggest challenge we’ve had is not burning the Christmas dinner,” said Garcia.“We have to trust our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are searching for a woman who disappeared while driving from San Diego to Victorville nearly two weeks ago. According to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, 53-year-old Izetta Burney went missing on November 24. Burney disappeared while driving home to Victorville after visiting a San Diego spa, a friend tells 10News. According to the friend, Burney’s phone goes straight to voicemail and her credit cards and bank account show no signs of activity. Burney was last seen in Victorville driving a black 2008 four-door BMW with California license plate number 7EXG207. She is described as five feet, 11 inches tall with a tattoo on her right arm and a mole above her lip. She was last seen wearing a black top and black spandex pants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said.The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl.The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the U.S. prepares for the possibility of a coronavirus vaccine, San Diego County public health officials detailed what groups will see the vaccine first.San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said the state anticipates receiving 327,000 doses in mid-December, with about 28,000 doses heading to San Diego County.According to the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the phases for vaccine distribution will follow:Phase 1A: Healthcare personnel, nursing home residents, nursing home employeesPhase 1B: People with underlying medical conditionsPhase 2: Teachers, school staff, child care workers, food supply chain workers; Critical workers in industries essential to the function of society; People in and staff working at correctional facilities; All older adults not in Phase 1Phase 3: Children and young adults 30 and younger, critical workers not in Phase 1 or 2Phase 4: Everyone else living in the U.S.Wooten added that the county's first round of vaccines will have to go toward Phase 1A, and that there are well over 28,000 people in the first phase alone."It's not just doctors and nurses, it's other healthcare personnel that might take food to individuals in their room that would have COVID-19 or maintenance or janitors," Wooten said of the Phase 1A group on Wednesday. "So those are at the top of the list, acute healthcare facilities. Again, it is going to be very challenging. We are working out the numbers and working out the process now. But the good news is that the first shipment isn't going to be our last shipment."Wooten said that the second round of vaccine distribution will likely be within three weeks after the first round. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say the man shot and killed on Friday night by a Border Patrol agent behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall was trying to enter the U.S. illegally.A statement from Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector reads:“On Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a United States Border Patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States immediately west of the port of entry in San Ysidro, California. During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm, wounding the man, who was later identified as an adult Mexican national. Nearby agents and law enforcement personnel responded immediately and initiated lifesaving efforts until emergency medical services arrived. At approximately 6:25 p.m. the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is currently being led by the San Diego Police Department. Customs and Border Protection will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The specifics of this incident have also been shared with FBI, DHS OIG and CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. Additional updates will be provided by the San Diego Police Department, inquiries should be directed to them.”SDPD added Saturday that the 30-year-old man was shot once in the torso by the agent after he fought the agent, who sustained minor injuries.Social justice leaders with the American Friends Service Committee and Alliance San Diego have sent a letter to SDPD calling in part for an independent investigation to be handled only by police, not border officials or unions. Part of the letter reads, “Any involvement or coordination with these agencies, and specifically with CIIT has the potential to corrupt the investigation and could be considered an obstruction of justice.”Pedro Rios with the American Friends Service Committee said that he and others are considering holding a demonstration on Sunday. “I think for us it's important to ensure that people are treated with dignity regardless of who they are and we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the person who is now a victim and is now deceased,” Rios told ABC 10News on Saturday. He added, “I think we should permit the investigation — an unobstructed investigation — to move forward and that way we get to know exactly what took place that led to the demise of this individual.”There's now a call for evidence related to the shooting to be released right away. “We know that there's a lot of surveillance cameras in the area, not only belonging to Customs and Border Protection and [the] Department of Homeland Security but also the Las Americas mall has a lot of cameras in the area,” said Rios.Officials are not releasing the name of the man who was shot or the name of the agent who fired at him. 2848
