SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday reported seven more deaths in San Diego County due to influenza complications last week, bringing this flu season's death toll to 42.The seven residents were between the ages of 53 and 90 and all had additional medical issues. Only two of them had been vaccinated, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. At this time last flu season, the county had received reports of 281 deaths due to flu complications.The county also saw a new weekly high for lab-confirmed flu cases at 545, according to the HHSA's weekly flu report. The county has recorded 5,486 confirmed flu cases so far this flu season, a far cry from the 17,397 reported at this time last flu season. County health officials touted the data in the weekly flu report as evidence that the current flu season may still be cresting."Influenza is still widespread in the region and continues to sicken San Diegans," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who went on a South Bay crime spree that included shooting at a moving vehicle and ramming an occupied San Diego police vehicle during a pursuit was sentenced Thursday to 19 years in state prison.Alfonso Ayala Flores, 26, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and resisting arrest for a series of crimes last November that culminated in him driving toward officers who cornered him in a cul-de-sac and ramming a patrol car.One officer opened fire on the pickup truck Flores was driving, striking the truck, but not Flores.He was also given a separate 16-month sentence for an unrelated burglary case, but that term will be served concurrently with his 19-year prison term.The spree began with Flores carjacking a motorist's Ford F-150 pickup at the Frontier Motel in San Ysidro on Nov. 6. Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom said that on the following day, Flores shot at an occupied vehicle.Two days later, he sped off when San Diego police spotted him driving the stolen truck in the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road in San Ysidro. The suspect, who had a female companion in the truck with him, fled west, where he wound up at the end of a cul-de-sac in the Nestor neighborhood.As officers got out of their cars and shouted at him to halt, Flores made a U-turn and accelerated toward them, prompting one of the officers to open fire, police and prosecutors said.Naoom said Flores rammed the patrol car with the pickup as he sped away, with police again in pursuit. The subsequent chase ended in the 1200 block of Holly Avenue in Imperial Beach, where he pulled over and ran off along with the woman, according to Sainz.His companion was quickly apprehended and questioned by police before being released. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As San Diego County heads into a "Halloweekend," public health officials are urging members of the public to practice COVID-19 protocols -- including avoiding large gatherings such as Halloween parties and door-to-door trick-or-treating."These activities involve face-to-face interactions with people from different households," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a COVID-19 infection is detected among a participant, it will be very difficult to find and notify those who may have been exposed."These traditional Halloween celebrations are not advised, and large gatherings are not allowed, under state or local health guidance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was fatally stuck on the Mission Valley (8) Freeway in San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.The crash occurred on the westbound 8 Freeway near Hotel Circle about 8:15 p.m., the CHP reported.The body was found near the center divider. There was no immediate word on the age or gender of the victim. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Murder and other felony charges were filed Wednesday against a 20-year-old probationer who allegedly fired a gunshot toward his brother, missing him but inadvertently killing a next-door neighbor asleep in his bed.Manuula Save is accused in the Saturday morning death of Michael Walker, 38, who was shot about 1:45 a.m. by a bullet that traveled through a bedroom wall in the defendant's apartment and into the victim's unit in the 13400 block of Midland Road. Walker was hit once in the abdomen and died at a hospital about an hour later.Save faces life imprisonment if convicted of murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.RELATED: Man killed by stray bullet in Poway apartment complex, suspect arrestedDeputy District Attorney Kristie Nikoletich said the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument and physical fight between Save and his older brother. His grieving widow, Christina was inside the courtroom Wednesday, crying throughout the proceedings. 10News spoke to her earlier this week. "I'm just seeing this hole in his stomach, and then I look over, and there's a hole in my wall," Christina Walker said on the phone. She said he was sleeping in the guest room that night, so his snoring would not wake her up — A move that would place him right in the path of that stray bullet, and kill him hours later. Save then allegedly hid the 9mm firearm, which he was not allowed to possess due to a previous hit-and-run conviction involving the death of an elderly woman, Nikoletich said.
