A top Republican official in the area President Donald Trump is visiting Tuesday is asking him to wear a mask.The president held a campaign rally event inside an airport hangar in Winston-Salem. The campaign has said masks, hand sanitizer and temperature checks will be provided for attendees.Dave Plyler, the Republican chairman of the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, told local media he believes Trump should wear a mask while visiting."It's been ordered by the governor," Plyler said of the state's face-covering mandate. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in North Carolina, do as the governor says."Trump took the stage Tuesday evening without a mask on. While some in attendance, especially those seated directly behind Trump, wore masks, the majority did not, according to photos submitted by the Associated Press.North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s mask mandate is still in effect. Cooper is a democrat."He (Trump) is a citizen of the United States, but he is also a guest in our county," Plyler told the Winston-Salem Journal. "Without a mask, he could get sick, and he could blame the governor."Plyler is a supporter of the president and is pleased he is making the trip to Winston-Salem. However, he believes if Trump wore a mask, it would set the right example for other people."You know what would be neat? If before he got off the plane if he gave everybody a box of Make America Great Again masks," Plyler told CNN.The president has encouraged wearing masks and keeping socially distant during the pandemic. A trainer in Florida is back home with his family after hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease.“I’ve finally done it,” said Ryan Beck, in his final video.It took Beck 160 days, 2,193 miles and 14 states.“It was definitely an adventure,” he said.Raising awareness for Parkinson’s disease has been a life goal for Beck.He trains people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in his Rock Steady boxing class. One of his clients is his grandfather.“These people need to get moving. One of the first things they do is sit back and they are not exercising, they are not pushing themselves, and this kind of program really encourages that,” said Beck.Beck helps train up to 100 people living with Parkinson’s disease each week.“My granddad was my second client and my longest-running client now,” said Beck.Beck had spent most of his adult life in a completely different profession but says it was his grandfather Bill who inspired him to start helping others.“He got this diagnosis when I was 8 years old so I grew up with it. I didn’t really know how hard he was struggling, I mean it’s just my granddad right? It just made me respect my idol, my hero, that much more,” said Ryan Beck.“I didn’t expect him to do all this. I didn’t expect him to jump in and get so involved. It’s just exciting to watch other people get the same results,” said Bill Beck.Beck’s hike was supposed to involve others dealing with the disease. They had to cancel due to COVID-19 concerns.“I was forced to keep my head down and continue my journey and spread the word about how fitness can really benefit people with the disease,” he said.The pandemic made the hike difficult and lonely. But for Ryan, “quitting was never an option even one the hard days when I didn’t think I could go on.”Seeing his family at the end made it all worth it for him. A North Carolina pastor who led a march to the polls over the weekend that ended with police pepper-spraying participants says he will lead another march on Election Day.On Saturday, Rev. Greg Drumwright led the "I Am Change" march in Graham, North Carolina, from a local AME Church to the Alamance County Courthouse.According to the Raleigh News & Observer, the march included a moment of silence for George Floyd, who was killed during an arrest in Minnesota this summer and whose death sparked a nationwide protest movement against police brutality.Following that moment of silence, the News & Observer reports that deputies and police officers used pepper spray on the crowd and began arresting participants. At least one journalist covering the event was arrested.Some participants told the News & Observer that they were given little warning as to the officer's decision to shut down the event. The Associated Press reports that Graham Police say they issued several warnings to the crowd to move from the roadway before releasing pepper spraying and later arresting eight people.On Sunday, Drumwright confirmed in a TV interview that he intends to finish the march on Election Day. A new survey shows the COVID-19 pandemic is giving people more faith in science. 3M's State of Science Index was encouraging for scientists and medical professionals, but the results also showed a lack of diversity is a major obstacle in the fields of Science, Technology Engineering and Math or STEM."They did the survey in 2019 and when they came to release the information now in 2020, obviously this whole pandemic had occurred and so they wanted to see if the answers and results had changed. So, they ran the survey again, very quickly. What they found was that this pandemic pulse or the information they found in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic has been just incredible," said Dr. Kate Biberdorf, an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and a 3M partner.Dr. Biberdorf says amid the pandemic, with scientific research and discoveries front and center, 89 percent of their respondents said they trust science. Pre-pandemic, Dr. Biberdorf says just 24 percent of people said they would speak up and advocate for science. Now, 54 percent said they would. A big difference in less than a year."The main things that just keep standing out to me is that our skepticism is down, our trust is up. We are leaning towards our experts, we’re talking to our scientists," said Dr. Biberdorf.However, the 3M State of Science Index also showed a large portion of Americans were discouraged from getting into STEM-related careers. "One of the questions we asked was, 'Have you ever been discouraged to pursue STEM in any way?' And what we noticed was there was a really interesting trend when it came to our age demographic," said Dr. Biberdorf.Results showed 9 percent of Baby Boomers were discouraged, 24 percent of millennials and 28 percent of Generation Z Americans, which is an upward trend. So, 3M asked why they were discouraged."Globally, the number one answer was just a lack of access to science classes. They just don't have access, they can’t get the acid, they can’t get the science kit. But in the United States, of those who were discouraged to pursue STEM, what we noticed was that our number one answer was inequalities due to gender, race and ethnicity, so that is glaring," said Dr. Biberdorf.Boukham Sriri-Perez is a high school physics teacher at Duncan Polytechnical High School in Fresno, CA. "The majority of my students in my AP Physics class are male and I have very few female students. Last year, I only had one. I believe that it is my responsibility, that I have to be really intentional about how I teach my female students in the class," said Sriri Perez. She says she tries to encourage many of her female students to give them the confidence to go into physics or other science fields and make a huge difference in the world. Sriri-Perez works for Fresno Unified School District, the same district she attended growing up. Sriri-Perez gets emotional recalling how influential and inspiring her own high school science teachers were, but says there was a lot she battled to get to where she is today."However, there’s one piece that I think I had to learn on my own as a female student and as a minority and as a refugee, is that I live in two different cultures," said Sriri-Perez. A culture that she says didn't see women in STEM-related fields. Sriri-Perez says educators can play a huge role in encouraging future STEM leaders who are minorities and women. 3416

A non-profit organization announced its come up with a way to feed voters at several polling places across the nation for free on Election Day.World Central Kitchen kicked off their initiative last week with the announcement of its #ChefsforthePolls.They say people often cast their vote before work, during their lunch break, or after work, and those are the same time's people typically grab something to eat.And with long lines at polling stations, that could be the difference between voting and not voting, so they want to help make it a convenient experience for voters."WCK and our partners are activating #ChefsForThePolls to serve nourishing meals on early voting days and Election Day," the organization said on its website. "We'll be stationed by polling locations around the country, targeting those with historically long lines, predicted massive turnouts, or limited facilities, sharing meals with anyone – no questions asked.
