(AP) — For tens of thousands of children in California, the biggest monsters this Halloween are wildfires that have thrown trick-or-treating into disarray.Nancy Metzger-Carter and her family have been in a San Francisco hotel since Saturday when a blaze in Sonoma County wine country forced them to evacuate their home in the small community of Graton.Every day, her 11-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son worriedly asked how they would still have Halloween because they left their costumes behind."We were like, 'No matter what, you're gonna have a Halloween. Her daughter and her 10-year-old friend, whose family also evacuated, went to the Love on Haight boutique in the city's famed Haight-Ashbury neighborhood to put together hippie costumes."The people were so sweet to them. They found pants that will fit them. They were helping to cut them," Metzger-Carter said.Many families who live in and around wine country north of San Francisco have no neighborhood to bring their kids to collect candy because they're coming home to destruction, are still under evacuation orders or facing lingering power outages meant to prevent electrical equipment from starting fires in windy weather.And kids on the other side of San Francisco Bay, southeast of the Sonoma County blaze, are seeing Halloween plans literally go up in smoke."Today at work, our lunch conversation was: 'What are you going to do for Halloween if the air is not good?" said Hillary Sardinas, a field biologist in the Bay Area city of Albany. "It's obviously not the biggest issue with the fires. You care about people being safe. But yeah, it's potentially a lot of disappointed kids."Some parents like Sardinas may throw a Halloween party instead. She and her husband would host their daughters' preschool classmates with candy, a pinata and a movie if trick-or-treating isn't an option.If the air quality is acceptable, the couple will take their children out, likely wearing masks and for a shorter amount of time close to home.Smoke and poor air quality became too much for Traci Moren, an acupuncturist who lives in Berkeley. She decided to take her sons, ages 9 and 4, out of school and stay with a friend in Santa Barbara.Last year, they left town around Thanksgiving because of a wildfire. This time, they left Wednesday to make it in time for trick-or-treating, which is a "much bigger deal" to her oldest son."He was pretty upset when I told him we might not be able to trick-or-treat. His best friend already left town," Moren said. "I just want to make sure there's a way to make it happen."Moren's older son goes to a school with an annual Halloween parade. Around 400 costumed students walk around the playground and then around the block, Washington Elementary Principal Katia Hazen said. It ends with a dance party on the playground.The school considered having the parade through the hallways and stairs because of smoke but decided to go ahead with the usual outdoor plans Thursday.The so-called Kincade Fire in Sonoma County has burned 120 square miles (310 square kilometers), destroyed more than 140 homes and forced more than 180,000 people to evacuate at its height. It's more than halfway contained, and most people have returned home. Despite widespread blackouts by the state's largest utility, electrical equipment that wasn't shut off may have ignited the flames last week.Strong winds also have whipped up wildfires in Southern California, destroying houses, forcing people to flee and leading utilities to cut power.In Sonoma, which was hit hard by the fire, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley's main location will be open until 5 p.m. on Halloween, even to kids who aren't members. Clubhouse director Jonathan Antimo is expecting more than 100 children.The clubhouse will host a mini Halloween carnival with a costume contest, a doughnut-eating contest, "spooky tag" and movies. They also will let kids trick-or-treat room to room."We're going to try to keep the Halloween spirit alive and keep the kids happy and the fire out of their minds," Antimo said.Planning the festivities has kept his staff from feeling stuck at home and stressing about the wildfire."Our team is just really excited to help. They all jumped at the offer to come in and work," Antimo said.Parents can go to Airnow.gov to look up the air quality index by city, said Mary Prunicki, director of air pollution and health research at Stanford University's Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research. BOCA RATON, Fla. — New developments in the investigation into a Boca Raton pet store where authorities say a dead puppy and several sick puppies were found late last year.The owner of Poochie Couture was arrested on Tuesday and is facing multiple animal cruelty charges.Marc Rosenbluth, 37, has since bonded out of jail.Last November, dozens of puppies were removed from Poochie Couture by Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the pet store was shut down.Rosenbluth surrendered some of the dogs after Boca Raton Police and Animal Care and Control said they found a dead 3-month-old puppy, along with several other sick animals."Had we not gotten there with Boca P.D., most likely the death toll would have much higher," said Dianne Sauve, the director of Palm Beach County Animal Care and ControlSauve said closing the pet store is a victory.Records show that of the 58 dogs inside the shop, investigators found the dead puppy and six french bulldogs that were sick with multiple problems. Two of them needed intensive care.Rosenbluth's arrest report said Poochie Couture lacked prevention of injury and did not assist with ongoing veterinary care."It is a shame some animals had to die in a result of this," said Kelly Evans, who called police in November, claiming Rosenbluth and his wife were not taking care of their puppies. "I am glad he is arrested now and there is some justice for the animals."Sauve said ACC likes to tell people to always adopt and don't shop. Bonsall, Calif.,- Many horses and their owners are returning home to San Luis Rey Training Center, after the Lilac Fire devastated their homes. Chomping away at her breakfast is 6 year-old thoroughbred, Miss Napper Tandy.She is a sweet, race horse, who is also a survivor. “I smelled the smoke, and knew there could be trouble,” owner, Sam Nichols said, while recalling the troubling moments that changed their lives.Last December’s Lilac Fire burned 4,100 acres of North County, destroying 157 structures.One of them was their home— the stables at San Luis Rey Training Center in Bonsall.Miss Napper Tandy managed to get away from the flames, but found herself in a small pen with six other horses.In the chaos, she was badly injured.“She had been kicked pretty bad in the leg,” Nichols said.For a race horse, it was devastating. But thanks to donations and community support, she and dozens of her stable mates found a temporary home at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.“I rehabbed her here, I started working her here,” Nichols said.It worked. In her first race since the fire and her injury, Miss Napper Tandy took first.Adding to her title of “survivor,” she became a first-time “winner.”“It toughened her up, it made her more of a fighter. She’s always been a fighter, but she came through it pretty well,” Nichols said proudly.But five months after the devastation, temporary stables are now being opened up at San Luis Rey.Many riders and their horses are moving back.Miss Napper Tandy’s stay in Del Mar will soon come to a close.“It’s bittersweet going back. It’s been great for us and the horses. (KGTV) - The fate of a decades-old neighborhood icon in Bonita is about to be decided in court.For nearly 23 years, Nisreen Stephan and her family have been making pizza at their pizza shop, Giant Pizza King, on Central Avenue. But these days, running her business includes a slice of uncertainty. "Very stressful and very sad," said Stephan.Next Monday, Stephan and her husband will head to court. Their landlord, Alcott Estates, L.P., says their lease has expired, but the Stephans argue they exercised an extension that gives them another 2 years. Stephan says the landlord crossed out the extension option on their lease without their approval."They should honor the rest of the lease," said Stephan.The landlord's plan: to replace their business with a drive-thru Starbucks. Right now, less than 200 feet away, is a Starbucks in the same shopping plaza. That Starbucks would reportedly be replaced by parking."This is our retirement, our nest egg ... I love Bonita. It's like a part of the family. I want to serve as along as I can," said Stephan."This place is like second home. BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. -- The largest wildfire on record in Colorado is only 51 percent contained Tuesday, although firefighters say they were finally able to “go on the offense” battling the blaze this week.The Cameron Peak Fire is more than 200,000 acres in size. It started August 13 and is burning northwest of Denver in the mountains. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.A Red Flag Warning starts Wednesday, as dry and windy weather persists.The weather is also hampering efforts to control two new wildfires burning in Boulder County, north of Denver. Both started over the weekend.The Calwood Fire is under 10,000 acres and is about 17 percent contained. The Lefthand Canyon Fire is 470 acres and 4 percent contained. The cause of both fires is still under investigation.Because of their proximity to residential areas, thousands are evacuated due to these two wildfires.
