SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least one San Diego woman is a part of thousands who've volunteered to participate in a human challenge trial to find a vaccine for COVID-19. April Simpkins is a healthy 29-year-old. Simpkins said she felt helpless watching as the pandemic spread around the world, until she heard about 1 Day Sooner while listening to a podcast. 1 Day Sooner is an organization that advocates for volunteers willing to participate in a human challenge trial. The trial means being infected with COVID-19 in hopes of speeding up the process for a vaccine. The trial is restricted to young and healthy people. So far, there is no plan for any human challenge trials to fight COVID-19, but over 30,000 thousand people, from over 140 countries, have signed up to volunteer. The hope is to have the list of volunteers ready, if and when such a trial is approved. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Country legend Clint Black is moving beyond Nashville stardom with his first-ever musical, now playing at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater. ‘Looking for Christmas’ is about Staff Sergeant Mike Randolf, who returns from deployment to Afghanistan to be with his family for the holiday."Mike Randolf is making it home just in time for Christmas but he's not really quite home. And through his daughter and her excitement over Christmas, understanding how it works, and then ultimately why it works and why we do it is one of the things that propels Mike forward,” Black told 10News.Clint Black created the idea from his 1995 holiday album and wrote the musical with playwright James Sasser."It was a real odyssey for me to try to find the true meaning of Christmas and it's what we're trying very hard to get across in the play."Randolf struggles to find the joy of the season with the help of his family."For me, the true meaning behind Christmas as I discovered it through writing the album was really the message to look around to others and what they need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Communities along San Diego's coast have seen an increase in graffiti and tagging as the weather warms up and people flock to the beaches.Most recently, a wall along the sand in Solana Beach was tagged twice, frustrating people who surf and swim nearby."It's a public beach, there's no reason someone should be desecrating it like that," says Andres Gomez, who surfs in Solana Beach regularly. "I wish everyone would be more respectful of the space that we share.""I just think of my tax dollars being wasted," says Solana Beach resident Darla Dressler. "Somebody's gotta come paint it. So either the HOA's paying it or the city's paying it."Earlier in May, 10News reported on a home in Pacific Beach that was hit by graffiti. But in May alone, there were 1,989 reports of graffiti. That's nearly a third of all the reports in 2019 so far.It's also well above the average month in 2018, which had 19,541 total reports, or about 1,628 per month.While the city tries to respond to each complaint, several local community groups have taken it upon themselves to clean up the tags. The Pacific Beach Town Council hosts regular graffiti clean up days. Their event in May removed more than 700 tags according to a Facebook post. 1579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the temperature rises and more businesses, like movie theaters, are reopening San Diegans and people from neighboring counties are flocking to get a dose of normalcy."We sold out today which is great news for everyone, we sold out today very quickly." General Manager of Theater Box Donnie Eversole said.He said it was wonderful 'being home' back in the theater, "we haven't been in the theater for 90 to 120 days so it's like a new adventure."He said it helps that the week they opened, two blockbusters, Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Bill and Ted Face the Music, are screening.While they're capped at 25% Eversole said you can make sure you claim your seat by reserving online. They are working to add more showtimes while abiding by the new guidelines.Last time San Diego had sweeping reopenings, there was a huge spike in coronavirus cases. Eversole said they are doing everything they cna to prevent another spike, "every cdc guideline is followed to the letter, we do not bend, we do not break. We follow the rules because not only is our business affected, everyone else is and we want to make sure everyone is getting a fair shake and able to recoup some of the summer that's been lost."San Diego is the only lower tier county in Southern California with the ability to have so many re-openings, drawing attention from our neighbors.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher spoke at Wednesday's press conference, urging everyone to do their part to prevent another spike, "One of the most dangerous settings is indoor gatherings, it is house parties, it is people gathering together in an indoor setting and there really is no way for us to enforce that or prevent that other than the public's help and cooperation."He said if there are gatherings and another spike in cases, businesses, like Theater Box, could shut down once again. 1857
