School districts across the country are developing their plans to welcome back students this fall. From mandatory mask-wearing to lunch in the classrooms, students who return will likely be faced with a whole new learning environment."There will be a transition. The school and the staff in your school are making sure you stay safe," says Dr. Conolly."I wanted to see how Trent, my youngest, was when I went out. When I saw how he looked behind the mask and how he kind of retreated I thought, 'OK, I need to be more sensitive with him.' He doesn’t need all the details, he needs the facts, what we do when we go out now, what you’re going to expect when you see," says Beth Middleton, a former elementary school teacher and mom of four.Middleton is hoping her local school district provides parents with specific details of what children can expect when they head back to class."If we don’t prepare them for what the classrooms are going to look like and the counties don't prepare us as parents for what it's going to specifically look like when they enter at all different levels, then we’re not going to know. Then we’re not going to prepare them well enough," says Middleton.Plus, there are some families who have been directly affected by COVID-19. Schools will be focusing on the health, safety and mental health for those students and staff, too. Then, there's the wearing of masks by teachers and some kids who may or may not be wearing them."You might have to explain, 'Well, maybe some kids aren’t wearing masks because they have a health condition and they can’t wear a mask. Or maybe because of other things that are going on.' So just try to make sure you’re educating your kids about best practices and you’re talking to them about if someone isn’t maybe why that’s occurring to help them understand, to try and eliminate anxiety that might exist," says Dr. Conolly.The key is to remain calm. Kids will react to the pandemic the same way you do. Give them the safety tips and reassurance they need to start off school in the healthiest way possible. 3304

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle's police chief says she will retire. The move was reported Monday, the same day the City Council approved reducing the department through layoffs and attrition. Scientists are exploring mysterious “blue holes” that form at the bottom of the ocean off Florida’s Gulf Coast.The blue holes are underwater sinkholes that vary in size, similar to sinkholes you can see on land, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They are diverse biological communities full of marine life, like corals, sponges, mollusks, sea turtles, sharks, and more.“Underwater sink holes, springs, and caverns are karst (calcium carbonate rock) features that are scattered across Florida’s Gulf continental shelf,” said NOAA.NOAA says little is known about blue holes due to their lack of accessibility and unknown distribution and abundance. Openings can be several hundred feet underwater and many openings are pretty small.“In fact, the first reports of blue holes did not come from scientists or researchers, but actually came from fishermen and recreational divers,” wrote NOAA.Last year, a team of scientists explored one blue hole, called “Amberjack Hole,” about 30 miles off Sarasota’s shoreline. NOAA says the exploration of the hole was the team’s most detailed blue hole investigation to date. Divers and a “benthic lander” were deployed to the bottom, 350 feet down.NOAA says the team collected 17 water samples from just outside the hole down to the bottom and collected four sediment cores at the bottom. They also discovered two dead but intact smalltooth sawfish, an endangered species, at the bottom of the hole. One of the animals was recovered to undergo a necropsy.But next month, crews plan to explore an even bigger hole, called “Green Banana.”The rim of the “Green Banana” is 155 feet below the sea surface and the bottom is at a depth of approximately 425 feet, according to NOAA.“The configuration of the hole is somewhat hourglass shaped, creating new challenges for the lander deployment and water sampling,” said NOAA.From these missions, scientists are hoping to learn the following:Whether the submersed sinkholes are connected to Florida’s groundwater or if there is groundwater intrusion into the Gulf of MexicoIf a particular blue hole is secreting nutrients and thus affecting an area’s primary productionWhether microenvironments harbor unique or new species of microbesIf the Amberjack site should become a protected area 2301

  

Security lines and close human interaction at airports could one day be a thing of the past.With the travel industry determined to get people flying again, experts say the motivation to innovate is in overdrive.Airports have a way of fueling anxiety; one misstep can send even the most seasoned travelers into new heights of annoyance.So, could it ever be an experience we actually look forward to? The airport industry certainly hopes so.Justin Erbaci, the CEO of Los Angeles World Airports, says the innovations that land in your airport are usually tested at LAX first.“We’re using this as a platform to push forward a lot of things we wanted to push through, but there wasn’t the interest or the buy-in from government agencies or the industry, or the willingness to invest in these types of solutions,” Erbaci explained.Now, the industry is hearing customer complaints loud and clear, looking to revolutionize the airport experience.“That’s the goal for us, is to allow people to come through the airport and not have to see anyone and be able to serve themselves throughout the whole process,” he said.The first leg of your next airport experience could include the following:A touchless kiosk you can operate with your smartphone to check-in to your flightChecking luggage? Instead, passengers could be screened with biometric facial recognition technology.It’s already a reality at Dubai International’s smart tunnel, which the government says gets travelers through passport control in 15 seconds.LAX has tested this technology with passengers boarding flights, so they don't have to pull out their boarding pass."Through surveys, we’ve done over the years…seen people are willing to consent to give up identity aspects to get through the process faster,” Erbaci said.And carry-on bags could be screened using remotely-operated X-ray machines.While a completely self-service experience is likely several years away, changes are being implemented now to improve TSA screenings.“We have new technology that has been rolled out at dozens of airports across the country that allows the traveler to insert their ID or scan their own passport,” said TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers.Dankers says the agency is looking at innovations being used around the world.“They test to make sure they don’t compromise security in the airport environment,” she explained. “We look to those cutting-edge technologies to make sure we are on the forefront of that.“We can’t think we’re going to be able to recover from an unprecedented situation by using old methods and means.
