The 90,802 cases added in the past 24 hours pushed India’s total past Brazil with more than 4.2 million cases. India is now behind only the United States, where more than 6.2 million people have been infected, according to Johns Hopkins University.India’s Health Ministry on Monday also reported 1,016 new deaths for a total of 71,642, the third-highest national toll. New York City police officers shot and killed a black man Wednesday after he pointed what they believed was a gun at them, authorities said.After the shooting, officers discovered the man was holding "a pipe with some sort of knob on it," Chief of Department Terence A. Monahan said at a news conference.The incident started shortly before 5 p.m., when officers received 911 calls of a man aiming what callers described as a silver firearm at people in Brooklyn, Monahan said."Three different 911 callers described a man with a gun, pointing it at people on the streets," he said. 588

New research shows women are more optimistic about aging and retirement than ever.Jane Lafave is using retirement to follow her passion. She volunteers at a refugee resettlement agency, making sure people are prepared when applying for jobs.Ironically, it took her leaving her job, to be able to do this.“My whole career really was balancing my children and my husband, you know, my work and all that kind of thing,” Lafave says.Lafave spent decades working as a certified public accountant, and she retired at the age of 57.“It was just time,” she says. “I needed more time and space in my life to do things other than work.That led her to the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, which placed her at the African Community Center.For two days a week, she helps refugees adjust to life in a new country.“This is just a great gift for me to serve other people who have had a much harder life than I’ve had,” Lafave says.Lafave isn't alone.A new survey from TD Ameritrade found women are increasingly viewing their retirement years with optimism.“The Women and Aging Survey” found 62 percent of women said retirement will be, "the most liberating phase of my life," and 72 percent said after years of focusing on others, aging finally gives them an, "opportunity to focus on myself." Eighty-three percent said aging provides a fresh chance to "reach new goals."Nearly 9 of 10 women surveyed said, 'it's important to me to retain a sense of higher purpose as I age.“I feel that this is my time in life to give back,” Lafave says.That's what she is doing here.“I think that's one of the gifts of age is that we've become much more aware of purpose and the time is short and we need to use it.” 1686

NEW YORK CITY -- Diners at a restaurant in New York City are requesting bubbles. But not the kind of bubbles to float away on, or to drink.Cafe du Soleil has created bubble seating for its customers. The Alvantor bubbles are plastic and can zip open or closed on two sides. There is plenty of room for a table of four inside."People love it. It's very supple. It's very cozy," owner Alain Chevreax said.He started preparing for cold weather early."I ordered the first bubble in July to try out because I was already thinking about the fall weather," Chevreax said.The restaurant now has 16 bubble tables.Cafe du Soleil is one of thousands of New York City restaurants struggling to stay afloat due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Chevreaux said he hopes the bubbles keep diners warm and dry as the temperature drops. He estimated the bubbles will be useful until the temperature goes below 45 degrees."Now people are aware of the bubble and when they make a reservation they say, 'Can we have a bubble?' I say, 'Of course you can have a bubble,'" Chevreaux said.In addition to comfort, customers Alfred and Barbara MacAdam said they like that they're protected from other people's germs."It also helps the restaurant bring more people in because you are enclosed and therefore protected," Alfred MacAdam said.While Cafe du Soleil has a plan to supplement indoor dining, which begins in New York on Sept. 30 at 25% capacity, many city restaurants do not.Despite the start of the fall season on Tuesday, Andrew Rigie, of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, said the city still has not given restaurants guidance on heat lamps."We have really been pushing the city, saying these small business owners need an opportunity to plan,” Rigie said. “Are you going to allow propane, which they can't currently use? The museum plans an exhibition explaining the significance of the two through interviews and images, but the pandemic has put an opening date in limbo, said Andrea Lipps, Cooper Hewitt’s associate curator of contemporary design.“The desire to acquire these particular emoji arose from what we were seeing as the desire for inclusion and representation of various groups and communities and couples on the emoji keyboard,” Lipps told The Associated Press in an interview ahead of the announcement.The emoji are commonly known as “woman in hijab” and “interracial couple.”The hijab emoji, as it’s informally known, was submitted in 2016 to the Unicode Consortium, a nonprofit that oversees emoji standards with voting members from the world’s top digital companies.
