BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China values its traditional friendship with Zimbabwe and hopes to push forward relations between the two countries as well as the two armed forces, said Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie here on Sunday.Liang made the remarks in a meeting with Zimbabwean Commander of Defence Forces Constantine Guveya Chiwenga.Liang hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries. He spoke of Zimbabwe's defence forces as a "good friend and partner" of People's Liberation Army (PLA).Since the establishment of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties 30 years ago, cooperation between the two nations had continuously deepened in the areas of politics, economics and trade, culture, education and health, Liang said.China expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's peaceful reunification, said Liang. He also thanked Zimbabwe for support on issues concerning China's core and major interests.Chiwenga expressed appreciation for China's long-standing support to Zimbabwe in various areas. He reaffirmed that his country would continue to stick to the one-China policy and was willing to further enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two armed forces.He also said Zimbabwe attached great importance to cooperation with China, and hoped to strengthen friendly cooperation with China within the framework of China-Africa Cooperation Forum.Earlier Sunday, Chiwenga also met with Chief of the General Staff of the PLA Chen Bingde.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to Bangladesh and started his trip to Laos, the second leg of his four-nation tour.In Dhaka on Tuesday, Xi met separately with the country's opposition leader, parliament speaker and president.In talks with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xi lauded what Zia has done to promote the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship.He said China appreciates very much Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests like the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.He said China supports Bangladesh's economic development and will continue to do its best to help the south Asian country.Zia said China is a close and friendly neighbor of Bangladesh. XI'AN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local authorities to keep flood casualties and losses to minimum and to launch reconstruction work in a timely and orderly way.Hui was speaking during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Weinan and Shangluo cities in north China's Shaanxi Province from Aug. 2 to 3.He visited affected residents, as well as soldiers who were fighting the floods, saying the flood work had entered a crucial stage.Since mid July, many areas in Shaanxi Province have seen continuous rain, leading to frequent natural disasters, such as floods, mountain torrents and mud-rock flows.Continuous rainstorms caused mud-rock flows in Zhulinguan Village of Danfeng County, Shangluo city, on July 23 and 24. Hui visited the village and urged officials to address food, drinking water, clothing and housing issues.He also called for the repair of roads and resumption of water and electricity supplies as soon as possible.Homes, schools and hospitals should be reconstruction priorities, he said.Meteorologists forecast higher than average rainfall this month along the province's Hanjiang and Weihe rivers. Hui ordered local governments to intensify flood warnings, improve response plans, reinforce reservoirs and river embankments and replenish emergency materials, so as to be well prepared for more rain and floods. 

ZHENGZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a bridge collapse last Saturday in central China's Henan Province has risen to 37 with 29 still missing, rescue headquarters said at Tuesday midnight.Among the killed people were three tourists. The headquarters counted retrieved bodies and asked family by family about missing people to get the numbers, which may rise as witnesses say they saw about 100 people on the bridge when it collapsed.China Central Television (CCTV) reported Tuesday night that at least 50 people died in the collapse without giving the source.The Yi River Bridge collapsed at about 5 p.m. Saturday in Luanchuan County, Luoyang City, plunging the people on it into the rushing waters, a local government spokesman said.Thousands of rescuers are still searching for missing people and possible survivors.Villagers from seven villages and soldiers have launched a massive search for survivors, said Li Guangming, deputy head of the administrative office of Luanchuan county government.The rescuers are focusing on spots that could hold people who were rushed away by torrents, such as banks with lush plants, said Qi Weiming, deputy head of Luanchuan's military office.News broke of the accident after Luanchuan's government wrote an apology which was published in Monday's Luoyang Daily, saying "we are deeply sorry for the heavy loss of life ... and we take responsibility.""The bridge was crowded with people who had come to watch flood torrents when it collapsed. They were villagers and tourists from a nearby nursing home," said survivor Li Xianghong in an interview with local media Dahe Daily."More than 10 people fell with me, including my nephew, at the southern end of the bridge which collapsed first. For a moment, the river was full of struggling people."Li was caught by a tree branch and rescued by other villagers.Witnesses say the two ends of the bridge collapsed first. And the whole bridge fell in about one or two minutes, most people on it did not manage to escape.The bridge, built in December 1987, was over 200 meters long and more than 10 meters high. It was the only bridge on a about 4-km section of the river.An initial probe shows the dilapidated bridge collapsed after fallen tree trunks became stuck under it, blocking the passage of the raging flood waters, Luoyang officials said.Officials said they were continuing the investigation and vowed to severely punish those who were to blame.The flood has damaged a local tap water plant, cutting drinking water supply to the county's residents. Transport to the county was also disrupted by the flood with some bridges and roads damaged.
