CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- As the Sweetwater Union High School District deals with financial trouble totaling tens of millions of dollars, employees are starting to feel the impact. At least 300 employees with the district opted for early retirement, some of whom retired this December. Peter Bishop has worked for the district for more than 17 years as a math and science teacher. RELATED: Lack of oversight, massive spending and even larger deficits continue to plaque SUHSDBishop says he, along with hundreds of others, was offered early retirement after learning that the district was operating at a deficit. “There’s always a little bit of emotion when you go through a life transition like that. I’m sorry to leave the kids, sorry to leave my colleagues, those are the folks I’m going to miss, but, you know, time to move on.”Bishop expects that there will be an impact to schools throughout the district as experienced teachers move out and younger, less experienced ones move in. RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District faces potential fraud investigation“Well there’s no question there’s going to be an impact at every school someone leaves. The teachers that retired were all long-term teachers. Very experienced. When you have that many years in the classroom you bring a lot to the table.”Bishop said, whoever replaces him has a lot to learn about managing the classroom. “It’s a steep learning curve the first couple of years.”TIMELINE: Sweetwater Union High School District's budget woesIn November, the district began to offer employees 50-years-old and older who’d been with the district for more than 10 years the option to resign then retire from the district. Those who selected early retirement were given two options for bonuses: Leave in December to receive 85 percent of their annual salary or leave at the end of the school year in 2019 to receive 60 percent of their annual salary. The offer comes as the district figures out how to deal with financial woes. A recent report by the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team found massive spending, tens of millions in deficit and lack of oversight as just a few reasons for the financial trouble facing the district. 2213

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista loves to come together for a celebration, and nothing unites the community more than another Little League champion.Ten years ago, a team from Park View Little League launched a phenomenon, beating a team from Chinese Taipei to win the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Since then, three other teams have represented the South Bay in central Pennsylvania, and each time, the community rallies together for send-offs, viewing parties, and championship parades. Luke Ramirez celebrated his 13th birthday during Park View's magical run in 2009. Now 23, the team's towering star still remembers it like it was yesterday.See complete coverage of Life in Chula Vista"To have that go from just my teammates to the entire community of Chula Vista...that's always going to be special to me," Ramirez told 10News. Two years later, the All Stars from Sweetwater Valley reached the U.S. semifinals in Williamsport."It's a good, strong baseball community." Oscar Castro managed Park View to the title in 2009 and has cheered on all the teams that followed, including another trip for Park View in 2017. "It's amazing how close Park View, Eastlake, and Sweetwater Valley all are."RELATED: 20 teams for 20 years: San Diego's bestIs there a secret to the success? CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Parents at Eastlake High School are asking the Sweetwater Union High School District board to investigate a math teacher that students accuse of making inappropriate comments. The parents say the issue started last spring when the teacher made comments about erectile dysfunction in class. Other parents say the teacher hardly teaches, forcing their kids to fall behind. Dan Huslin, a parent of an Eastlake High sophomore, said the school's principal told him last year the teacher was suspended, but this year he found out he's back in the classroom. Huslin said when he asked about why he returned, the current principal told him the district was providing the teacher counseling to help him improve. On Monday night, parents spoke at a Sweetwater district meeting and asked the board to investigate and remove the teacher. Also, parents asked the district to provide math tutoring for the students who are now behind. A district spokesperson told 10News the teacher was not suspended last year and was instead out for personal reasons, adding that they couldn't comment on whether the teacher is receiving any counseling because it is a personnel matter. The spokesperson did say the parents concerns are being addressed, but wouldn't specify how. 1288
